As a resident of "Scarberia" I was unaware of a lot of the restaurants you went to, I'll have to check them out. Having originally hailed from one of those small towns north of the T.O. I was surprised you were not familiar with butter tarts and Nanaimo bars. There are a couple of towns that now hold some very well organized "Butter Tart Festivals". You'll have to hit one, it's the end of the summer and they're all done now - maybe next summer. They're not just butter tarts but lots of rural Ontario cuisine in general, built around honey and maple syrup, local variations on chutneys and things done with "scotch bonnet peppers", ginseng and garlic. I grew up there and they surprise me sometimes.

Probably not Japanese. But almost half of All Koreans living in Canada live in and around Toronto. We got 2 separate K-Towns
@wctoronto5 жыл бұрын
ohdaUtube Yes, the Korean and Japanese population here is much smaller compared to Chinese, for example. BC has more Japanese than in Ontario. There are more Koreans in Ontario than Japanese. So yes, you’re right, the availability of authentic Japanese food is much less compared to Chinese cuisine(s), for example. However, if you know where to go, there is a fair selection of high quality, authentic Japanese food here. Just like in the U.S., a higher population of Japanese reside mostly in the west coast. I’ve never been to BC, but I assume they have greater selection of authentic Japanese food. There’s actually tons of authentic Korean restaurants in Toronto. Esp, the last few years, there’s been a surge of new, trendier Korean restaurants and ones that specialize in a specific type of traditional dish. You won’t have an even ratio of different ethnicities represented in any single place in North America. That just doesn’t exist. However, Toronto has a lot of variety when it comes to ethnic foods. Aside from native cuisine as mentioned in the video, I noticed that Tibetan cuisine has been in the spotlight lately here. We lacked Spanish food for a long time, but new restaurants have been popping up throughout the last decade or so. I’ve tried Uyghur food a few times. The list goes on...

@@ohdaUtube Bloor between Bathurst and Christie is called Korea Town for a reason (look it up on Google Maps) - though there are a scattering of Korean places all over the city. That said don't travel from Seoul to Toronto to eat Korean, Seoul has better Korean, but Toronto's is really good. Don't travel from Paris to Toronto to eat French - Paris is better but Toronto is really good, I have had some absolutely excellent Texas style Barbicue in Toronto - not as good as Franklin's though. You get the idea. What makes Toronto's food scene phenomenal is not that the Peruvian food is better then you would get in Lima but that it is really good and you can get just about anything here. You most certainly can get Korean and lots of excellent Japanese as well.
@JeremyMacDonald19732 жыл бұрын
@@ohdaUtube I would think that in most cases they would not be quite as good because you simply can't get fresh ingredients from the country being emulated and because the very best chefs stay in the core market. So, for example, the Texas BBQ place in Toronto is made by a Texan Pit Master of some renown... but was he the best of the best? Well probably not because if he was he would have stayed in Texas. He would receive more prestige in Texas for having the best Texas BBQ then he can get for having the best Texas BBQ in Toronto. Beyond that while he imported all the equipment he used from Texas he had to make a choice. Either import the Beef from Texas or source it in Canada. No matter which option is taken it won't be as good as Texas. The best Texas BBQ needs to be made with specifically Texas Beef that is super fresh and that can't be had in Toronto. I happen to know in this case the Pit Master was very choosy about his Canadian Beef and developed a supplier to meet his needs so the quality is there but only Texas Beef can make perfect Texas BBQ.
