@justinguitar3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but playing funk without a pick will be heavy on your fingers. You need high precision and exact timing that is easier to achieve with a pick though. Here's is a lesson about strumming without a pick: www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/how-to-strum-without-a-pick-b1-107 | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide

@Th0rZ6668 жыл бұрын
excellent as always!! but you should probably mention the best pick gauge. Because if you be using a 1mm or above its much harder and string breaking is more likley?
@justinguitar8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Booth it's about to loose grip! The pick I'm using here (Blue Chip) has NO flex at all, neither the Jazz III I use as well.
@kuraido63708 жыл бұрын
Nope. m Most guitarists use pick above 1mm. They do not hinder the strumming at all. If you are hard on the strings it means you technique isn't right. When i was a beginner i thought like you, but I stuck to hard picks because they allow the versatility of moving from strumming to solo lines. Which you can't do with a flappy pick. Work on your technique.
@Maxmaxz8 жыл бұрын
+Clyde O. DunZ I dunno man, Paul Gilbert uses 0.60mm and he seems to handle his solo lines reasonably well. Some people use thick picks for funk, others use thinner picks for shred. Those people probably buck the respective trends of their genres, but they do exist. I think it's worth encouraging people to try various thicknesses and keep experimenting, rather than asserting that one type of pick is for grown ups and another for beginners. Certainly though, if someone's never tried a thicker pick, I'd recommend them giving one a go. But the mentality that someone's not a real guitarist unless their using a thicker pick is probably isn't helpful (I understand this isn't what you're saying, but some people do).
@kuraido63708 жыл бұрын
+Maxmaxz Don't put words in my mouth. I never said he should use a thick pick, nor did I say that if you don't use a thick pick you aren't this or that. I simply stated why thick picks are better. It is a fact thick picks are better for solo lines because they don't bend around the string. I never made any division nor any distinction based on what you use, so don't try coming in trying to look like the good guy of the situation by inventing facts.
@northof50now8 жыл бұрын
+Chris Booth - I think an entire series on picks, picking would be great. In the past 2+ years of teaching myself guitar, a couple of things become clear: a) to get to the next level, the secret is in the picking hand. b) what you use to pick/pluck has to be figured out for yourself. At best, someone can tell you what they use, what others use, what "most" use, etc. In the end, you'll have to figure it out. My collection is up to a dozen different sizes and shapes. Only now am I starting to gravitate to a basic size/shape.

i don‘t think i‘m doing it right. When i strum, most of the time, the pick seems to „stick on the strings“.. making strumming super hard. Might be the angle of the pick thats bas? But i feel like doing that rotation motion only exaggerates that, making it even harder and rather bending strings than actually strumming them

@mr.anonymous55015 жыл бұрын
How can you write in English like that, but not understand what he's saying? He said when you're starting to strum like he's doing in the video, you might drop the pick a lot, or unconsciously let the pick turn around, pointing out that it is useful to be able to do rotate it back into the proper position, without panicking and losing the rhythm. It's exactly what a tutor would do face to face with you, if their pick rotated and they had the thought to use it as a lesson. All Justin's videos show, describe and explain whatever the main subject is very well. I think so, anyway, and I don't think a little tangent that gives you extra knowledge. Reading what you write, I thought he was going to lose track of what he was saying originally as he was too busy trying to hold the pick on his lip and nose by scrunching them together, or something. Lol.
