@soldat25013 жыл бұрын
Ricochets are more scary than direct fire. You can take cover from direct fire but a ricochet can go at wacky angles. I got hit by a ricochet from a bullet that was almost spent. Thwack, right in my leg but it didn’t penetrate, just left a nice welt. I wanted to find the bullet and keep it but there were other things going on.

this is exactly what scares me the most when I come up with some imaginary scenario of me being in combat, I'm not a soldier I just like learning about military tactics and doctrine anyway back on track, it's the idea of being out of my primary arms effective range & being well within the enemy's.. I guess that's why GPMG's exist but yeah still, there aren't a whole lot more terrifying things in regards to modern combat that I could imagine, except for urban warfare. fighting house to house, room to room, having to clear rooms not knowing if going through this next doorway and clearing that last room will be the last thing I ever do... I'm sure it's one hell of an adrenaline rush, but man oh man, ill get my thrill seeking fix via skateboarding! roflmfao nothing but respect for our Canadian vets that've served and lived through combat, same with American combat vets. although I don't agree with the war, I've got nothing but respect for the young men and women that've gone over seas and did what they had to do to keep themselves and the people next to them safe, at great personal cost to themselves. there's no such thing as coming back from a war without injury, everyone is a casualty, the trauma that comes as a result to prolonged high stress situations while I don't deal with exactly that, is something I have a great deal of understanding and support for those who suffer from it. I may be a lowly civilian, but if any vets or really anyone that's struggling ever needs to talk to someone I'm always here!! y'all are awesome. ily all, every single last one of you.

Serious question... How often in modern warfare do you actually see what your shooting at/whats shooting at you. There is loads of 'helmet cam/gun cam' footage from ground troops of bullets and RPG's etc going off around them/hitting the ground about them but it seems rare that visual contact is made with an enemy.
@ourvaluesarewhoweareinadem40933 жыл бұрын
Almost never. Going back to the US Civil War veterans have pretty universally commented on the 'emptiness' of the battlefield. The range and lethality of rifled weaponry causes troops to disperse and hide as much as possible.

It is more an aspect of guerrilla warfare. The guerillas as they always do, refuse to engage in open combat, they try to ambush only with light forces. As a response, conventional forces try to make contact but not to get close to avoid unnecessary losses. They try to pin down the enemy and let air power brute force some kills. It's not so much a characteristic of modern warfare alone, but of modern warfare combined with guerilla warfare. On a strategic note, this kind of warfare is not so effective for conventional forces. Waging wars for kills instead of territory is often a losing battle, as has been shown in Vietnam and now Afghanistan (again). If there would be WW3 it would look totally different, large technology clashes where drones, nuclear arm etc. would wipe each other out and then conventional combat including house to house fighting, just like Stalingrad, but with night vision goggles. Then the helmet cam footage of the average soldier might look different..
