The toughest and most capable man I’ve ever known, someone who has been in many fight situations always stated that his number one piece of advice on fighting was to have a good ‘run game’. As capable as he was, he wasn’t stupid. Baseball bat, knife or multiple attackers, run.

@@nickc8819 .place a barrier between you, throw something, kick. That dojo knife fighting works about as well as “you do A, I do B”, training did in the octagon. The guy I know lived on the streets of NYC. Used to rob drug dealers up in Washington Heights. Has been in jail in 3 different states, has had over 50 real street fights. And, he’s an extremely intelligent guy who’s father was a doctor. Grew up in a nice home, but got addicted to crack. Has subsequently been clean for 20 years. On multiple occasions he has been confronted with crazed schizophrenic men with knives, screwdrivers and shanks. When a crazed grown man wants to stab you, he’s going to rush you and keep stabbing until you have 50 holes in you. I suppose if you really have no escape, then fight like the crazed man, go in quick, or run. Standing there expecting what you “trained” for to happen, won’t happen in real life.

It´s a shame some people still don´t get the point. As you said it, if possible, don´t be there. Everything else is when you have no choice. You can either do your best and fight back or f"#% stay still and die. I´d always go for option n.1. Great video man! Very good one.

The first option was like that statement, “if you are homeless than buy a house”. Sure no matter how much you you learn about ideal scenarios of self defence, they do not come practical in real life, it is as much predictable as the random patters of weather.

You are the second video I saw on YT about a knife attack that actually makes sense. I've been thinking about a defense against a knife lately and if I could add something... 1. You have to be way, way faster than the attacker - develop the speed double his. 2. His right foot out - your right foot out - pivot to his outside: he'll have to re-adjust repeatedly and might get frustrated. 3. Grab him by the clothing by the wrist and sweep him. I used it a lot on the street because most untrained people tend to tense and get stiff in a fight which makes them very vulnerable to being thrown or swept easily ( judo ). 4. If you are not fast - just run and pray to God he isn't faster. 5. Assume every attacker has a knife on him.
@catocall7323
@catocall7323 6 ай бұрын
On point 1. timing beats speed. Being faster is better, but the ultimate decider is timing. Also, it's almost impossible to be twice as fast.
@marcelnowakowski945
@marcelnowakowski945 6 ай бұрын
@@catocall7323 It is very difficult but... An average guy's punch is about 1/5 sec / meter ( 3 feet ) A boxer's punch is about 1/10 sec / meter. Since this is not a fair play on his part... play his game and beat him at this! It's been 2 months since I started throwing knives. My thinking is to throw it from outside the danger zone which I estimate is about 4 feet for a guy with a knife. Let's say you are 7 to 10 feet away from him. A slight step back and a throw. No time for him to do anything. I throw no-spin ( very practical ), it is going amazingly good. Using Milwaukee "duct knife" ( 5.5" blade, looks like a military knife ) I got from Home Depot. Check out tutorials on YT. It's actually a great skill to have. No chance for a stabber...

I managed to disarm someone three times who came after me with a magic marker about over 20 years ago in my 20's. Now I don't have the option of running like other people do because of a brain injury that I had when I was young that causes my body to have similar conditions to cerebral palsy, but because of it the brain rewires itself to it's conditions, so I have extremely fast hands. At that time I was taking Aikido, Filipino Pangamot, and Kyusho Jitsu from Dillman's camp. Now when the guy came after me with the marker it was way to fast to get a joint lock from Pangamot or Aikido, so I used Kyusho Jitsu where I timed his movement just right where when ever he came after me I backed knuckled a pressure point on the back of his hand which caused him to immediately drop the marker. I managed to do this three times to him. That's why I recommend that every martial artist learn Kyusho Jitsu or pressure fighting. Now you don't have to change your martial arts or style to learn Kyusho or Tuite Jitsu. All it is is a targeting system and you can bring it into any martial arts you want. You could even bring it into wrestling or western boxing if you wanted too.

Good stuff! Comes from a basic point of realistic "to do's" that are natural to our/their body mechanics of position. Run-distance, use any natural barriers for cover or eluding, and (find suitable hand held weapon from environment), and then if faced--strong motor blocking. Smart sequence to follow.

@shader26
@shader26 8 ай бұрын
I’ve thought the same under for example gang attacks. Running can be good but it depends on a lot of things. I’m not in great shape, if I thought they wouldn’t chase would be a good option. Or running to a better defensive position (up a hill, towards obstacles or etc.) BUT…if you think they will chase, and if they are younger, you can end up winded from running and Adrenalin and then you are still in the same situation but now you are tired, worn out and still face the same attack. Also as I think you are pointing out, someone faster and with a knife may now be right up on you and from behind so you are in the worst situation. I did aikido for a few years, and the best I got out of it was that positioning, getting to the side and somewhat behind an attacker, as well as moving (if more than one attacker) so they are always en each others way. But add a knife or knives and …no easy solutions.

As a forces veteran and martial arts enthusiast. Provided the run or obstacle option is not there then position your feet apart. This gives stability. Present the smallest target. Bring arms up in a boxers stance. Lower head down. Then make full eye contact. Once established ask a question . Before they answer hit out with fist as hard as possible. Provided contact made and injury incurred poke both fingers into eyes whilst grabbing the knife carrying arm. Blinded the assailant will panic and be more easily disarmed.

For any fighting situation run "if you can." But sometimes you can't because of age, injury, or you are with family, or in an enclosed space. Even if you are an expert, there is no guarantee that anything will work. Still it is better to practice something instead of nothing but don't count on anything working. I have done 60 years of a variety of martial arts.

We used to train against baseball bats. I know that knife will come rapidly fire so it is different, but I saw some similarities. If they are trying to scare you by showing you the knife there is a good chance (assuming) they will take a big swing. We would train for that. Timing is everything with a bat, you wait until there is a back swing and then charge in. Once you are inside the bat is almost useless and in fact they will try to retain the bat so they concentrate on retention. They are so believing that the bat is the most important thing they wont let it go. Main thing is to avoid those big swings. I have dealt with a bat in a real world fight and the method worked, however once they realize that the bat is out of the picture you have a whole new set of deals. Mean the bat fails they are less confident and eliminating (hopefully not killing) will be easier. The one time I faced a knife i used my leather jacket and caught the knife (trapped) it by swinging my jacket, but they ripped it free. If I had jerked it like a fishing pole It would have worked but it certainly lowered the guys confidence. The next thing I learned watching these Samoan dudes fighting a pretty big group of Latino dudes. The attackers were trying to come in with knives and razors on the two big Samoan dudes. But they both took off their belts. Swinging them wildly each time a guy got close. They were not swinging at the knife but at the face. Getting hit in the face with a belt buckle will put a big crimp in your attack. I used that method and it worked but it is all in the timing. I use the start to run a way method and then turn back. You wait until they have started to chase you then i turn back and whop him in the face with the belt buckle. I hit him real good and he lost all his enthusiasm. I ran a way. But, to tell the truth a guy I worked with found out the hard way that in close fighting can be soooo dangerous. He grabbed the guy from behind while the guy was beating his gf. The guy immediately stabbed behind him rapid fire. My friend didnt even now he was getting stabbed. He barely lived.

Best defence besides running is learn to use an Escrima stick. Basic strikes, full commitment and a killer mindset will make it difficult, for the average knife attacker to believe he has the upper hand. Ive been teaching myself for about 3 months now. (purely from watching free content on a good Kali channel) Ive built a tyre dummy and Im able to go all out on it developing speed and power into combinations. I use wing chun concepts like the straight blast to overwhelm and overpower and my confidence has gone through the roof. Should the unthinkable happen one day . . . i have to say i feel a lot better knowing I have and can use, a "force multiplier"

Years ago I hosted a 'knife day' where about eight of us - all instructors in different arts - showcased and shared our super-duper knife defence strategies. The last session of the day, an instructor had brought along water soluable magic markers - the attacker attacked, each of us in turn tried our defensive moves and without exception everyone was badly 'cut' and several of us would have been dead if the attacker had been using a knife rather than a marker pen.... The lesson was obvious. Knife defence requires LOADS OF TRAINING and even more importantly LOADS AND LOADS OF LUCK !!!! As Mr Miyagi said in the Karate Kid movie - No be there !!!!!

@RobertAgarHutton
@RobertAgarHutton 7 ай бұрын
@@richardgallagher4880 Great question - the answer is none, on the whole we were working with avoiding and controlling the knife and then disabling the attacker - BUT unless you go full contact (which is not a good thing to do as every time you get knocked unconscious you kill some braincells!!!) you would not knock anyone out. Also, HOW do you knock someone out? Some people cannot take more than a light hit but some are 'ANIMALS' - look at professional boxing to see how hard it can be to knock someone out. Thus, avoiding and controlling and disabling is, as a general rule, perhaps a better option. By the way, as I said originally, surviving a knife attack is probably more about luck than skill :(

It doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to get the knockout if the opportunity presents and you are a good enough hitter but what about the 'little old lady' or - in my case - little old man - who is attacked by a younger stronger person with a knife. Bottom line is prioritize your survival. When you can and if you can afford to, walk away, run and not be there. Because at the end of it all, its not really just about skill or technique. You also have to factor in the determination of the guy holding the knife. PLus you may never know if he has more fight experience than you.

YEH - i was SHOCKED to have to get to about 20-30 years of age before i saw a police video on edged weapons before i realised HOW DANGEROUS a knife REALLY is!!! (I was already an expert at fighting and self-defense but was ignorant about several factors of how dangerous knives are). Even a 1 inch tiny knife cut in an artery (E.g. the face) which can make you bleed out really fast! A deep stab in the gut and you can end up having to use a colotomy bag for the rest of your life... {This was all in the context of why don't cops shoot ppl's legs or why do they even draw lethal force for a knife wielder.} The other reason is, the experiment about 'how fast someone can cover distance', before you can draw, aim and shoot!.... SHOCKING! A knife gives _anyone_ the power of/equivalent of 5-10 YEARS of real fighting experience/martial arts too!... 😲 Knives etc are ALWAYS WORSE THAN U IMAGINE, is what i am trying to say..... Keep away, keep away, keep away. If you are trapped, then ISOLATE THAT BLOODY ARM or try to kick kick kick, if you cannot... You just cannot risk repeated stabs... Jeeze, i would almost rather face a gun weilder than a knife weilder!!! A gun is only dangerous facing one way and won't cut you as u go to grab it, or the hand/arm holding it!!!

i'd be curious after the 2:30 mark, if you ever try to train with knowledge of where your own vulnerable/biggest arties are? So you can practice blocks, parries etc with the OUTSIDE of ARMS etc, NEVER exposing the insides (where it's more likely to find bigger veins and arteries at the surface)... Ergo less risk I like that this guy talks about NOT BEING IN THE SITUATION and RUNNING, OBSTANCLES etc LONG before any 'Knife Defense'

Right said Mr. Rubio, Avoidance of a fight scene is the best advice. Then placing some barrier betwee us, - and this is the point that deserves more attention: -- The barrier can be smaller than a container to hide or walk arouin. Some environmental weapons could be obtaine: may be a rod from the container, putting off your sweater and using it either a as a flexible block or even a slapping weapon. -- Another point is holding the knife: pointed hold is longer and more agressive, but easier to block, Accordingly, carryiing some personal items, like bags or umbrella spray, or just a towell around our neck could also come handy. Best wishes , Paul, 69 retired instructor of Karate P.s. for those more experienced: The way oh holding the knife may hel us, too: --Pointed, or forward hold looks more dangerous, but is easier to block or derail, --Reverse reverse hold is more defensive, shorter but worse to detect and even worser to block!!!. Do not try to take away knife: The old adage from Meesrs. Fairbairn and Sykes!

Specific defence teqhniques, arm movements whatever, would have to been drilled thousands of times over long period of time for to be second nature, and thats just for one spesific angel of attack etc, endless possibilites, i think overall skills in a practical martial art like mma,boxing, kick boxing etc, where u at least have had some amount of sparring, so distance control and «seeing» movements will be a factor in your favour. This and try to weaponize whatever object around to. A kravmaga knife course or whatever is not gonna help much, u probably gonna forget your own name When the adrenalin rush sets in, and your body and sense of time will feel like syrup.
