Flex got some of his facts wrong. Def Jam WAS saved by Roc-a-Fella, Murder Inc, and the signing of Ruff Ryder's DMX. Can not forget that Def Jam was on the verge of bankruptcy and closing its doors when they lost their 50/50 deal with Sony. It was not until they did the deal with Universal that saved them. Once the Universal deal was done the label was reborn with the 50/50 deals with the Roc and The Inc. No disrespect to Redman, Meth and other artist on the label at the time..but none of them were bringing in the numbers like Jay, Ja, and DMX. I do agree that The Roc would not be where they are without the rep & powerhouse backing of Def Jam. It was a profitable partnership for both labels.
@BuckDat
@BuckDat 6 жыл бұрын
If those signings saved Def Jam...that's still credit to Def Jam. There's no guarantee all those things pop off. They still gotta be worked by all the people at Def Jam. Not just their respective movements. I still remember both Ja Rule AND DMX being dismissed as 2pac clones when they first came out. DMX could have easily ended up another Canibus elsewhere.

Irv Gotti would co-sign Flex’s statements. Lyor helped poison the game with his tactics in today’s Hip Hop climate. But back in the 90s, he definitely looked out for Roc-A-Fella and Murder Inc. Lyor Cohen & Def Jam did joint ventures with both labels, meaning they were partners, never employees. Smart business. Ruff Ryders did the same as well. But inked distribution through Interscope. So to argue, Lyor never snaked him. He showed them how to flip 1-2mil into 100million. Dame just played bad politics with executives. But in today’s climate, because Lyor and his team assisted with the dumbing down of quality of music in Hip Hop with trash artists, Dame is trying to shed bad light. But there’s two sides to every story. Dame is right in some areas, but so is Lyor. He the only Jew (besides Jimmy Iovine) that gave ambitious black men opportunities to become powerful entrepreneurs (unicorns). Study the game and business. It will all make sense to you.

Even if lyor assisted with the garbage music, he had too, or else someone else would have done it. In business its called change with the times or die. We see it everyday. In the case of the rest, it was a business partnership that benefited all parties even Russell n Rick admitted to it. Hence Rick still works with artists these days

RichBones Bone exactly bro. But what I’m saying is Lyor did those legendary artists that we know justice. (Jay, DMX, Red, Meth, Ja Rule, Ludacris, etc.) all I’m saying is he put niggaz in position to own their own art and become self-made entrepreneurs. Why you think Jay never spoke bad on Lyor? Jay know some of his business acumen was schooled by Lyor.

Here's a question for everybody.....if Flex is so wrong, why aren't Jay-Z & Damon still business partners??.....Let us not forget that Jay left Roc-A-Fella to go work FOR Lyor as the President of Def Jam!!!....Damon Dash made a video accusing Steve Stoute of being a snitch & Jay-Z left him to do business WITH Stoute!!!.....Why is it that the very people Dame was always accusing of being bad people are the very people that Jay left him to do business with??....Flex is telling the truth about SOMETHING. At the end of the day Russell Simmons is the Lucky Luciano of Hip Hop, but Lyor Cohen was his Meyer Lansky.......Nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Dame likes to kick up dust behind the scenes, but he's never gotten rich since Jay left him........That tells ME everything I need to know.....Jay was the franchise, but Dame was somebody who would be rich as long as he was in business WITH Jay. Once Jay left??........That was it for Dame. He'll never be rich like that again. And you want to know what??.......He's bitter about it.

He didn’t cross them for Lyor. Jay left Roc-A-Fella & became the short-term President of Def Jam to get away from Dame. He was tired of dealing with him & wanted out. There are 3 things that drove Dame & Jay apart....#1 Dame spending Jay’s cash like there was no tomorrow......#2. Dipset who was a part of the Roc Family making a diss song about Jay & Dame making an appearance in the video of that song....& #3. Dame cussing out everybody at Def Jam & anywhere else who wanted to do business with Roc-A-Fella who wasn’t black or who wasn’t “black enough” for him such as Kevin Lyles, Steve Stoute, Lyor & many others. Dame was getting in the way of progress & he was stifling Jay’s career. Even Russell Simmons had grown weary of his shenanigans. It was time for Dame to go.

Seems like Flex, don't really get the concept of culture Vulture. Through this whole timeline it appears that all the lyors moves where based on his or def jam's financial interest. I'm not saying it's wrong but it doesn't prove that he's not a culture vulture. Flex didn't present anything that he did for the culture that didn't have a direct potential benefit to him. He should have gave flex his realitor, or provided the advice that Dame provided. In other words do for the culture without the potential of direct financial game. Whether you do or not I don't know but I do know none of what Flex said highlighted fact that he does.

To flex’s point it proves that Dame is not the guy to be calling Lyor a culture vulture. He literally was an integral part in the Roc dynasty. Dame shouldn’t be biting the hands that feed him because roca fella collapsed.
@TikevOne
@TikevOne 6 жыл бұрын
@@rheddnoir yeah I'm pretty sure Dame would agree with the notion that Lyor was played a big part in their success. Lyor assistance here again was for his financial gain. Which is not wrong, but it is not evidence against him being a culture vulture. Say I had stock in startbucks. And I send them flavors and ways to make more money. That doesn't mean I care about Starbucks, the people that work their or their customers. Even if what I provided helped Starbucks for the whole industry, it won't prove that I care it, since my motives can easily be tied to financial gain. Lyor contribution to the culture is huge, Flex just didn't point out anything he did for the culture that didn't involve his direct financial gain. Or if you did I missed it
@TikevOne

@@pistolpete8231 this guy has the N word, the r word , divisive race talk. You were on a roll. Every executive is a culture vulture, makes me think you too don't understand the term. Lyor is not being blamed for anything. Lyor is a business man, and this seems to be just business to him, which is fine. You actually proved Dames point. The culture is being exploited, but by who ? Who makes the most of the culture ? Who controls the music that is put out? And I know you want to jump the race, but that is not the answer. It is record label heads. Lyor is part of this group. He has the power and influence to stand against things that is harmful to the culture even if it cost him money. If he cared about the well being of the culture would he continue sign, promote, and push artist who are feed the youth of the culture destructive trash, when he has the positional influence to stop it on his label ? If he considered himself part of the culture would he not work to make it better. Is he obligated to no not at all. So there is no blame, but it does open the door for him to be considered a culture vulture. The topic is Lyor, not all or any other black people or white people. Lyor does not represent all white people or even all white people in his profession. Believe or not people of the culture are smart enough to and do know this.

Dame should stop "pocket watchin", as he himself calls it. Flex is right, in that nobody calls him on his shit. He says shit cause he knows these youngins don't know any better. Lyor DOES come from the culture. He started in the shit when there was no money like that. As far as what he does with the money he makes NOW and what he gives back... that's a different story and up to people whether or not they wanna call him on that. However, nobody is asking Dame to open up his books and show us how much money he's giving back to the community. If it was really about that, he would set the example on giving back and challenge guys like Lyor to match that. I have a feeling Dame doesn't give away money like that though.

Jaz put out more music after his first album and Jay was his DJ on his first record and he had better tracks on it than Hawaiian Sophie. Word To The Jaz came out in 1989 and his second release Fo Your Soul was a year later 1990. Jaz was really dope, and the game changed and a lot of dope MCs fell thorough the cracks and he wasn't talking about drugs, guns, pimps and hoes, he was speaking knowledge when it stopped being cool.

Vernon C Flex basically gives a detailed chronicled timeline of Dame and Jay’s rise into the rap game while rebutting Dame’s claims of Lyor Cohen being a “Culture Vulture”. He speaks in stark detail on their early record label situations (even the bad ones), and ties that in with how Lyor Cohen essentially helped them, when he really didn’t need to. I liked how Flex paints a picture of the climate of the rap scene back then, and just goes deep into their record label situations and basically calls Dame a liar, while also paying respects to him and Jay. He shows much credit to Lyor Cohen as well, by justifying it with him building many artists’ careers and doing it for many years. Hope I helped.
