A documentary about the Ohio Players (tvOne/Unsung story).
A history of the Ohio Players out of Dayton, Ohio (The Funk Capitol ) and part of Ohio's Funk History. Credits: tvOne.
The Ohio Players are one of the most successful funk outfits of all time, scoring monster crossover hits in the 1970s like "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster." They took funk into uncharted territory, bringing a jazzy, free form feel to chart-toppers like "Skin Tight," "Heaven Must Be Like This," and "Sweet Sticky Thing." Along the way, The Players - with monikers like Sugarfoot, Diamond, and Rock- lived up to their names, with super-sexy album covers that got nearly as much attention as their songs, and by lifestyle excesses that led to a major drug bust. Their notoriety was so extreme that the group was rumored to have killed someone during a recording session with the dying screams mixed into the grooves of a song.
See for Ohio Players Live at the Circle Star Theatre - 1977: • The Ohio Players Live ...
Ohio Players were an American funk band, most popular in the 1970s. They are best known for their songs "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster"; as well as for their erotic album covers that featured nude or nearly nude women. Many of the women were models featured in Playboy.
The singles "Funky Worm", "Skin Tight", "Fire", and "Love Rollercoaster"; as well as their albums Skin Tight, Fire, and Honey, were awarded Gold certifications. On August 17, 2013, Ohio Players were inducted into the inaugural class of the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame that took place at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Ohio Players were in a league all by themselves. Especially when James "Diamond" Williams (their sensational drummer- man listen to that foot drum) joined them and they proceeded in putting together 3 blockbuster albums in a row with "Skin Tight", "Fire", and Honey!" Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner with the double-neck guitar and that slanted fro (not to mention the greatest of funk voices)! These dudes were just simply TOO COOL. No one quite like them. But hey, no mention of "I Want To Be Free!" Come on now - to this day, I never could get enough of that one.

I remember having to buy the Ohio Players albums when I was 12 to 15 years old and keeping them in the garage then sneaking them into my bedroom after my parents went to bed unwrapping the album and then adding it to my rotation of EWF, Commodores, Funkadelic- Parliament, Isley Bros, Ronnie Laws, Chi Lites, Kool n the Gang and so on and so forth! Since i first heard the Ohio Players (i was maybe 5) I LOVED their music - my Dad played them a lot. The album covers troubled me bit as a young lady, but i would still sneak and play them. I saw them perform a few times as an adult; I wish I had seen them more. Some of their songs are MASTERPIECES of jazz infused funk, and their musicianship was off the charts. Best horn riffs ever, EWF included. They deserve more credit and recognition.

I used to hear them practice some Saturdays in a warehouse on the corner of Fairport and Hillcrest . And around the corner and down Salem Ave Roger and Zapp had a studio . As good as they were back in the day tell me this : Why aren't they in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame ? Whose going to be the 1st ones to induct them ? I would if I could . Sugarfoot used to go and see the battle of the bands at Island Park in the summertime . I sure do miss these brothers . R.I.P. to the funksters that didn't make it to this point . Dayton used to be the place to be once upon a time .

Grew up on the Ohio Players music 🎶🎵 and they were my favorite group back in them days and always! I remember the "Love Rollercoaster" rumor OMG 😅🤣😂. Had many neighborhood debates about who was the best band between Ohio Players & Earth, Wind & Fire. I was always down with my Boys from O-H-I-O! It's a tragedy that they're not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Damn shame 🤬

I remember having Funky Worm on a K-tel record as a young music scholar. That was an underrated little jam. These days, I don't know anybody who doesn't love their sound. Skin Tight nearly gets overplayed it seems. Only Sugarfoot could rock that double-neck guitar and make it look so hip. Their legacy will continue to grow.

Ohio Players were one of the first funk groups to catch my attention. The album cover images and the heavy sound with true musicianship, it was all good. Whereas PFunk subject material was often fantastical, the Players were speaking on everyday realities. Subsequently, they felt authentic. From "Pain" to "Angel", everything they made was solid. Not much after that, but they left an indelable mark nonetheless.

That comes along with having the right "front man" for your band. Their personality/charisma/talent either propels the band or tanks it! It's hard to believe Sugarfoot wasn't the first front man for them but I am so glad it came to be. He is truly iconic!!

HU You Know ❤ Seems like the Ohio Players were fire at Howard University in the 1970s. The Howard U Band would turn out with Skin Tight at the night games with lights in their instruments. Imagine its dark you would suddenly hear Skin Tight and see the lights then the band would march out almost in a run high kicks as the visiting band was seemingly played off the field the transitions were amazing so much fun everyone enjoyed it!❤❤❤😂😊😊
