In this piano tutorial, I break this funky chord progression right down and show you exactly how to play it!
Sign up for MORE awesome content at bit.ly/PianoPig...
This is a fantastic chord progression and it doesn't have to be funk, you can play it however you like! It is predominantly based in C minor and is 8 bars long.
This is a great chord progression for practicing some nice voicings and also for improvising over.
If you have any questions, just leave a comment below!

Do you have a video on how to formulate these complex progressions on your own, and if not, could you possibly make one in the future?

I do have a video on how to create basic chord progressions (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZbYeoqHjNt5otk). This chord progression is essentially using the same principles, but just developing it further by adding extended chords and voicings.

"the note A is not in the key of C minor..." neither is B but youre playing the major fifth to resolve it the whole time :O why didn't you explain that part?
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig 6 жыл бұрын
What time in the video? If you mean when I play the note B in the G7alt. chord, you can do that when playing the dominant 5 chord. If you want to get technical the note B is actually borrowed from the harmonic minor scale. If you were restricted to the Bb, the 5 chord would be minor and the sense of resolution to the 1 chord would be very weak.

I think it's a modal interchange. The V grade on your minor scale would be minor. In the case of this video Gm it's the Vm in the key of Cm. However in the harmonic minor the b7 (Bb) becomes a major 7th (B). So the V grade becomes dominant. If you make a Vm - Im cadence it's aeolian. A V7(b9) - Im it's harmonic. Resolving with a dominant rather than with a minor gives more strength to the resolution. You have tension resolving by a half step in the notes D-Eb and B-C I hope it makes some sense
@slapmyfunkybass
@slapmyfunkybass 4 жыл бұрын
Technically A and B are in C minor as the minor key can borrow from the melodic and harmonic minor. The dominant is still G, not Gmin, and neither has the music gone into another key.

At the start of the video, you mention that the progression is going to be based in C minor, and we're flattening the natural ninth of the G7 chord to stick within the scale. Shouldn't we be doing the same thing for the B in the very same G7 chord, or is it not an issue because the B is a part of the C harmonic minor scale? Great video!
@marekpiotrowicz6051
@marekpiotrowicz6051 2 жыл бұрын
In the harmonic minor, chord V is always major. B natural is the leading note which 'leads' up to the tonic C. In the natural or melodic minor, the B can be flattened, particularly if the melody is descending.

Hello pianopig, thanks for another informative video. I was wondering if you’d be able to make a video on building melodies to play over chords and how things interact in that manner, or simply your thought process/actions when you are soloing or creating a melody. I have learned voicings and progressions, and scales (a little bit about modes) but my melodic ability is basically non existent..

Great video but one thing; the the third of G7 is B which is also not in the key of C minor. You talk about how you have to flatten the A note because it’s not in key, but for some reason this is fine for the B…?
@Piano_Pig
@Piano_Pig 3 жыл бұрын
G7 is the dominant 5 of C minor, you always make the 3rd major in order to create a dominant chord - this creates tension which allows us to resolve it back to the 1.

More with the why certain extensions are flattened/sharpened. Please tell us why it’s okay to use rootless and altered voicings to minimize hand movement ( and still get the right sound). May sound like I know what I’m talking about but can’t ‘let-go’ enough to just play and feel my way through, while letting out this knowledge freely. Love your channel. Suggestions always appreciated. Patreon acct number with the suggestion is welcome.
