Crown 2012 mello section leader here! I'm going to attempt to clarify a few things you mentioned as well as adding a few more fun facts from personal experience. This show always gets my blood pumping (and makes me tired!) •The source music was originally written for Eb horns, and when the brass team was writing the music, they toyed with the idea of working with Yamaha to make custom Eb mellophones for the season. •The mello theme that happens twice was something that we "watched the drum major" (HEAVY QUOTES) but basically we ended up practicing it over and over and over again with our eyes closed until we could feel each other consistently. The drum major was there to check in for us at the end to realign with the rest of the ensemble. •We used to do "pop quizzes" during brass block which meant full runs of the opener. We'd be working on any other part of the show and we'd hear "pop quiz for water" from the box. •At finals, there was a phone ringing sound during the announcement which people thought was a fun addition, but it turns out Michael Boo's phone wasn't silenced and it happened to go off at the wrong time! •The end of the front ensemble feature that lines up with the rifle tosses was not planned by the staff. The front ensemble section leader planned it out with the guard and just... did it one day, and the staff kept it. •I can STILL you every single note from Fanfare for the Common Man, including where I was in the chord, how many cents I had to adjust my pitch to be in tune, and alternate fingerings we used. •The design team rewrote the drill going into the 3D rotating cube so that all of us had to learn new spots for the same move, but because the drill didn't look different, we spent an entire block practicing it OVER and OVER and OVER so that it looked just as clean as the night before, even though it was all new.

Any tips for preparing for Crown? I know they aren't the exact same organization as they were a decdade ago but still, any advice helps. I marched trumpet at Surf in 19 and that was a blast, was contracted for 20 but sadly we all know what happened in 20. I was in the audition process on trumpet 3 for Crown this season but I was so unprepared because it had been since early spring of 20 since I actually marched, especially because I was drum major at my high school in 20-21. I had I had to drop the audition and focus on school, going from a virtual junior and senior year made freshman year of college a bit of a rough transition. I want to audition again either this upcoming season or next (I'm a horn player so im thinking of making the switch to mello btw) .2012 is one of the best productions ever put on the field, if not the best, and my favorite show. The style of show that Crown had from 08 to 17 was unmatched in entertainment value imo.

as a concert musician i have always felt that crown was heavy on chordal tuning, especially through alternate fingerings. greatness doesn't just happen people!! that corps really does do it better than anyone else, year in and year out.

Lead trumpet from this show. Really do appreciate the value of you "APPRECIATING" for how hard this repertoire was. I hope this show stays in memories for a lifetime.

Their timing is impeccable. If you consider the fact that they are a hundred yards apart from each other and a lot of the times as they're playing the tubas are looking at the drum major from their bad side oh, they are giving us nothing but clean attacks and full playing. Carolina crown's brass is nothing but a clinic

11:41 The triangle formation landing from an incredible build up is a homage to the 1993 Star of Indiana. You can even see the uniform show a similar resemblance to 1993. Not to mention Matt Harloff was a drum major for 1993 Star. It was almost like they made a statement with that resolution that Crown is carrying the legacy of Star.

I'm honestly in love with the era of dci that was drill heavy. But then also I'm super interested in understanding better the appeal to the more modern style of dci
@dre65824 жыл бұрын
I think the best shows in DCI come when the two eras and styles converge. Having simultaneous demand while also having props and telling a story. I love fast paced drill but I also love the useage of props and verticality.
@daviddesalvo6234 жыл бұрын
@@dre6582 I guess agree to disagree then. I do love different shows for different reasons, whether it's the music, or the crazy drill, or i suppose the choreo, im lookin at you cavaliers 2010. I guess I've just generally disliked shows with huge props more than ive liked them.
@dre65824 жыл бұрын
David DeSalvo I like the shows where the huge props are out of the way mostly so they can still have traditional drill along with having something like that. Boston 17 and Blue stars 19 are good examples of that. They have props that are used to visualize a story while also having fantastic drill writing
@MinkyBoodle444 жыл бұрын
This is forever going to be one of my all-time favorite shows, not only because the performance was incredible, but because of the sentimental value it holds for me. This was the first year I ever got to go to a live show, and I think this show single-handedly got me into the activity. I was invited along with a couple of friends for their one of their birthdays to go to world championships (since I only live a couple of hours from Indy), and I reluctantly agreed to go along. I had pretty much no interest in the marching arts beforehand despite being in marching band, but these guys came on and just...completely blew the roof off of the stadium. They lit that crowd on fire. And then Cabaret Voltaire came on right afterwards. I, along with my friends and literally 90% of the crowd, utterly hated it. It left us so confused and weirded out. I've since come to appreciate that show more, but there's a childish part of me that's still a little disgruntled and bitter about it. This is one of those years that people talk about when they say "The second place corps should have won." I don't know if I can agree quite as wholeheartedly with that sentiment anymore, but it certainly was the most awe-inspiring show that year in my eyes and ears.
