They would need to know Morse and some Q signals, but they would not need to be hams. OTOH, the signal does exist, and now (free for the taking) the idea to flash it at a fumblethumbed pilot, be it by a controller or another pilot. You do know, right, that the first half of the Q signals is aeronautical? *Edit:* The big problem would be that tower signal lamps are not set up for morse, only steady/blinking colour signals. That leaves… what? Either "Stop" (steady red) or "Caution" (alternating red/green)?

Actually, I was on board of a flight from Amsterdam to Toronto ones, about 2 years ago. The Captain did his Passenger announcement and moments later he asked for pushback on the P.A. with the Cabin. The purser (probably) replied back on the P.A. that he was not certain if there was any ATC on board. The Captain then replied, I remember it vividly: "Well I ask Ground then!"

A couple of months ago i was flying on Mastricht Control and a KLM did a PA first in Dutch and then in English. When he was done the frequency exploded in laughter/comments from everyone else! Best one was a dutch voice going: "The worlds most experienced airline, just had another experience!" - Killed me!

I use much simple trick , ATC volume on low , PA volume on MAX , if I ever intend to make a PA on VHF1 I won't hear my voice back . The handheld mic isn't as clear as your 1000$ headset

@@KC_NZ Yes, there's a phone number that the ATC will give to the pilot that they have to call within a couple of days. By doing so, there can be a lot more detail given over an incident that happened. The pilot may not necessarily be in trouble, but often is, so it's kind of a dreaded thing to hear that over radio.

I used to work certain radio equipment in the army. We had to manually engage our carrier wave before transmitting our signal, then disengage our carrier wave again. One night on an exercise, one of the other stations on our net (some germans) forgot to disengage his carrier wave, and kept transmitting a tone for the next 12 hours. Our log read "Still carrier wave from the germans" every half hour.

Happens all the time. I cleared a SWA for their initial descent on the BOOSH arrival into STL one evening, and got their entire "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are beginning our descent into St Louis" speech on my frequency. I was like, "That sounded great, but I don't think any of the passengers heard it!"

Most of the times I have flown with Aeroflot, there has only been an automated announcement, mainly for turbulence. I have rarely heard the captain make any announcements to the cabin. I guess it is a cultural thing.

I've been on a couple of red-eyes where the captain talks to us while we're still at the gate but about to pull back, and then after we landed. He/she would turn on the seat belt sign if there was turbulence, but there wouldn't be any announcement since almost the whole plane was asleep (I would be one of maybe 5 people who stayed awake).

This is very funny. And I hate to be that guy....the guy who's super fun at parties. But this same kind of thing happened in a very, very different kind of situation. When a certain hijacker in September of 2001, thought he was making an announcement to the passengers, when in fact, he was talking to center ("...we have some planes..."). Again, sorry for the reminder, but I just thought it was interesting.
