Brent Spiner NAILED that role perfectly, every bit as much as Leonard Nimoy did as Spock.. I loved it in the movie Insurrection when Riker shaved his beard and Data noticed it, and Riker replied "Smooth as an android's bottom!" obviously leaving Data taken aback. Later Data asked to touch his shaved face, and when he let him Data shook his head as if to say "Nope, my butt's smoother"
@jamyskis8 жыл бұрын
It took Brent Spiner time to settle into the role though - his performance wasn't always that good. In Seasons 1 & 2, for instance, he often demonstrated far too much emotional response and never really came off convincingly as someone who was trying to understand the nature of emotion. From Season 3 onwards and in the TNG movies though, he was spot on, although I'd argue that the emotion chip made Data less interesting as a character.
@nightbridge10278 жыл бұрын
Sir Klingon, a Krogan you are not. LOL
@jamyskis7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I always found Nimoy's performance in general in the TOS episodes vastly overrated - the emotionlessness just felt too forced (and as you say, unconvincing in early episodes), and pretty much every one of Spock's story arcs was about him breaking out of that emotionlessness, lacking any kind of subtlety at all. The Motion Picture didn't resolve this. It wasn't until The Wrath of Khan where Nimoy's performance saw a kind of "enlightenment" - Spock became less of a character who couldn't feel emotion and more as part of a society that had made emotional action and expression a social taboo. It was sheer brilliance. Data was always supposed to be the mirror image of Spock. He's not supposed to be completely emotionless, as he needs typically human traits such as curiosity, awe and motivation to drive him to discover the other emotions and endeavour towards humanity. As I said, he didn't really keep it to those three emotions in the first couple of seasons, but he absolutely nailed it in Season 3, especially in The Offspring.

i think the point of data's character, is that his kind of intelligence is exponential by nature and has to be bounded very difficultly in a way even data isnt so good at comprehending (damn). so, i think what the "emotion chip" does is literally upgrade data with a new loop with new principles that contain the exponential nature of experience without losing the basic complexity for the massively varied field of sensation beyond curiosity, confusion, and motivation itself.
@imaclock81444 жыл бұрын
data does feel. the problem is. he doesn't care. he does, but it doesn't hurt him. it hurts us, and he comprehends that on a level that justifies the way we feel. computers this good, need to be treated like data. they deserve it. fuck your organic fascist specism.

My favorite was when a time-traveling thief/con man trapped Data in his small ship in an attempt to abduct him to an earlier time. The door could only be opened by his hand print. He held a phaser on Data, and when Data refused to follow the man's instructions, the man fired the phaser at Data, but it didn't work. In anticipation of the thief's plan, Picard had secretly disabled it. Then in his usual, cordial, matter-of-fact manner, Data said, "I assume your hand print will open that door whether you are conscious or not." AUTHOR!!

One of my favourite Data moments and indeed Star Trek moments, is the episode where Data as Mr Radioactive gets stuck in a medieval town. A little girl lost her mother, and she tells Data her father said "she had gone to a beautiful place, where everyone loves eachother and nobody ever gets sick". She asks data if he thinks there really is such a place; and he looks up at the sky and says "Yes, I do" thinking of course of Starfleet and the Enterprise. It shows what Starfleet and the UFP was all about, peace and happiness. Then modern trek had to piss all over that, in New Trek Data would laugh and say "No silly little girl, the Universe is a dark dangerous place full of fear and hate" because that's deeeeeeeeep and edgy.
