This funny fisherman feeds bologna to bass from a tiny plastic fishing boat. Every day Uncle Al Belcher takes his rod and fishnet to the canal that runs next to his home in Homosassa Springs, Florida. Catching the fish isn’t hard, but climbing into his tiny clear plastic boat is a challenge. Al told me that he’s become his own live bait several times. He rows out to the middle of the crystal-clear water and drops his anchor … a bowling ball. Then, mullet are moving and snook swim for their lives. I need to tell you that Uncle Al is what you call a “character.” He’s bright, funny and almost never serious. He fishes for mullet to use them as bait for his bass. Not just any bass … “Bologna Bass.” A few years ago, he tossed a slice of boloney into the canal and the bass went crazy for it. So, Al Belcher fattens his “Bologna Bass” on flat meat and then catches them with mullet. I asked him why he didn’t use bologna for bait? He told me, “That wouldn’t be fair. I’m too good of a fisherman for that.” Al Belcher is the greatest fisherman in Florida … just ask him. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1979.
