Korra apologizing to Tenzin @18:58 always gets me. Despite her being a reincarnation of Aang, i've always seen the relationship of Korra and Tenzin as a father/daughter. And like any good parent Tenzin didn't hesitate to forgive her.

This episode also spawned one of THE saddest gifs of the show. It starts with Iroh saying "Sometimes, the best way to solve your own problems -" and then it flashes multiple scene of Iroh and Zuko struggling through the Avatar series until Zuko becomes the Firelord "-is to help someone else." Iroh helped to raise Zuko to help process his grief over losing his own son.

@@borjankosarac3645 Late reply, but Vaatu is indeed aligned with what Wan Shi Tong wants. Wan Shi Tong wanted to know all about the world, but humans proved again and again that they would destroy everything they touch. He sees humans as inherently evil, and sees the Avatar (and Raava by extension) as traitors to the Spirit World. At this point, it doesn't surprise me he wants Vaatu to win. The spirits will still be there in 10000 years when the world is remade once more.

I love the way Legend of Korra pays homage to the previous series by having old characters come and teach a lesson or two, it connects the two series together in a way that gives us a nice reminder that it’s the same world and the next part of the story, but that it’s very much its own thing.

I totally agree. Legacy characters are sometimes used as nostalgia bate. They don't really do anything other than give you a hit of the old "member berries." I think Korra showed a lot of restraint in the use of the characters from the previous show. They appear to serve a purpose and don't overstay their welcome.

42:15 - I think the spirit taking is just something he can do because Jinora is already separated, her spirit is in the spirit world while her body is not. Unalaq uses water bending to corrupt/cleanse spirits, and Jinora right now is basically a spirit. I love the Iroh appearance because it's not just fan service. It fits with both Iroh's character that he'd be in the spirit world, seemingly having entered it to explore its' mysteries at the end of his life in the physical world, and it fits the advisory role he had in the original series with Zuko that he'd show up to fill need with Korra too. I'm so happy Korra apologized to Tenzin, she may be stubborn & headstrong in the moment but her heart is in the right place so she always comes around eventually & 'fesses up when she's made a mistake.

Korra seems so much lighter after her little movie time with Wan and Raava. It seems like a lot of her anger and frustration kind of melted away. Like, comparing this Korra to episode 5 Korra is like… it’s kind of night and day. It’s actually kind of a role reversal with Tenzin getting frustrated while Korra is being patient and wanting to keep trying. Not to say Korra doesn’t get a little hotheaded, she does with the Spirits. I also just love adopted dad Tenzin. His and Korra’s relationship is one of my favorite things. They really did my girl Asami so dirty this season. So fun fact, I actually remember watching episode 10 when it aired. My cousin was over and even though she didn’t watch Avatar or Korra she sat down and watched it with me. So imagine her reaction when Iroh shows up and I immediately start bawling. She was like “wth is wrong with you? Who is this dude?” I didn’t have the words back then to explain the greatness that is Iroh. But also, what an episode for her to come in on with all the weird and wacky things of the Spirit World at play. Dude Tenzin’s “what happened to my little girl” and then that look on Korra’s face! Ugh! Soul crushing!

The line Iroh casually lays on us "Sometimes the best way to solve your own problems is to help some one else" has resonated with me so much. And if you look back at ATLA, I feel like that piece of wisdom perfectly encapsulates Iroh's Journey. Through grief and suffering at loosing his son, he found himself helping Zuko become the man he needed to be, and escape the expectations laid upon him by his father, his "destiny", and himself. Say what you will about the maturity of cartoons in media but I now live by that line.

Uncle Iroh being in the Spirit World is even more emotional. When his life came to the end, he chose to ascend into the Spirit World. While it's quite obvious why he alone (other than the Avatars) was allowed such a choice, that also meant that, in the end, he chose not to go into afterlife to possibly be with his son again, but rather remain in the spirit world to help whomever might need his help still. Edit: Another fun fact I just realised: Korra had never met Iroh before, but she says "I know you" when she meets him, and calls him by the name. Some friendships, you know what they say about them.

I'm very sure that people in Avatar get reincarnated, they don't go to an afterlife. Raava didn't do anything to make Wan reincarnate, she just went with him. It is interesting, though, that Iroh was able to not reincarnate somehow.
@Heavensrun
@Heavensrun Жыл бұрын
@kryptonianguest1903 Iroh was able to transcend his mortal life through balance and meditation. He basically attained Buddhahood, or is at least a Buddha-like figure. Lu Ten on the other hand is probably reincarnated somewhere. The reason Iroh initially sought to understand the spirit world was to try and find him, but when he realized the SW isn't an afterlife, he has to let go of the hopes of a reunion.
@WPNSTV

I don't really think it's about humans being "allowed" to stay/ascend into the spirit world. I think it's much more about knowing how to and having the spiritual connection to do so. Also, Avatar is much more about reincarnation- rather than afterlife. So the idea of Iroh going to the afterlife to see his son is simply something foreign to Avatar lore.
@masansr
@masansr Жыл бұрын
@@WPNSTV "Allowed" definitely wasn't the correct word, but I searched my vocabulary and couldn't find and English word more fitting, though. "Nirvana" is probably the correct one, that the reply above you was talking about. It's not "Godhood", it's more "acceptance". Avatar world is a mix of many religions. Hinduism's reincarnations, Buddhism's being "one with the cosmic energy" and many, many other things etc. You can't say for certain which afterlife, if any, they have.

On the point of an evil airbender (no spoilers, just history): Just like with bloodbending, if you think about it, the ability to control or remove air, can become terrifying. In fact that was apparently the signature move of Avatar Yang Chen (the air Avatar that spoke to Aang). If confronted by multiple opponents, she would bend the air out of the entire room, causing all her opponents to pass out. Now, she would return the air before they died, but that was because she was not a killer. It has even been suggested that this technique was used by monk Gyatso. Remember, when Aang found him, he was surrounded by dead firebenders, yet he was not burnt. It is very possible that, facing genocide, he bent the air out of the room suffocating all the firebenders as well as himself. A dark thought, but does show how dangerous airbending can be.

There's some lovely character growth for both Korra and Tenzin (and Eska, surprisingly) in these episodes. Bumi reminds me of both Sokka and his own namesake, but mostly he is completely, utterly himself. Wan Shi Tong was always a little iffy. If knowledge is your highest good, morality just becomes a tool, and there is often no higher framework or context that can hold it. And yes, Aang lied to and betrayed him last time, which was not the best move to establish long-term trust in the Avatar. Iroh would absolutely know about helping someone else to help yourself, as well as looking for the light to see the light versus finding only dark if you look for it. He lived the first. Zuko lived the second, and Iroh had to help him through it. It also makes so much sense that Iroh, at the end of his life, would be able to send some part of himself to the spirit world to help others and live in peace forever. There were definite hints he had reached some kind of spiritual enlightenment in the first show. Re: Mako and Asami, I don't know why they would want to revisit that relationship. I can't make sense of it for the writers or for the characters. But I agree with you that Mako is a solid character. Asami is okay, but of the main four, I think Mako does have the best brain. The absolute worst emotional intelligence, though.

If you notice this talk of balance is very Star Wars force related. Filoni was part of the Avatar project to begin with so I am sure there are some similarities that flow between the two worlds. This is the hardest thing for fans of either story to understand is "balance". The force is SW is always trying to obtain balance. Too far to the light or too far to the dark is not balance. The force in SW as a narrative tool is always trying to create balance between the light and dark. The Avatar in this world is responsible for keeping balance between everything. Balance in spirit means not to far evil or good. Being in balance is a hard philosophy to understand either as a viewer or as a creator. Yet it is a very fun topic that is always open up to drama.

Just in case anyone has any questions as to who the MOST beloved character from the original series is, the moment the Iroh appears in the spirit world is the MOST VIEWED moment in this episode and throughout most of the series.

Well, it seems like the world is descended into chaos even With the Avatar. Perhaps the point is: it's impossible to bring the world into balance, but it's making the effort that matters.

I love that Iroh is the one who shows up in the spirit world. Easily one of the most spiritual character in the series, it only makes sense he'd just move to the spirit world when his time in the mortal world came to an end.

I wished in season 2 Tenzin fought Unalaq . He took Korra away from Tenzin as her new mentor. Tenzin is probably jealous of Unalaq's vast spirituality compared to his lack of spirituality. Unalaq tried to corrupt his child Jinora and Korras souls. Would have been a worthwhile Rivalry to explore.

I love Wan Shi Tong's evolution from an antagonist in ATLA to full-on Villain in Korra. He took being slighted by the previous Avatar and co. so poorly, such that he now views all Humans as enemies (much like Aye-Aye and the spirits in Wan's time).
@Anonymous-yh4ol

He's not a villain, just manipulated by Unalaq.
@tambourinesmusicmachine
@tambourinesmusicmachine Жыл бұрын
@@Anonymous-yh4ol I respectfully disagree. I don't think Wan Shi Tong needed any convincing. Wan Shi Tong said "Unalaq has proven to be a true friend to the Spirits". Despite his hatred for Humans, Wan Shi Tong can at least acknowledge Unalaq is a human who cares more about Spirit-kind than his own human race.

Does he, though? The writing for Unalaq doesn’t make sense, they want us to believe he’s got a point but his actions scream “Bwahaha, I’m evil!” I don’t quite fault WST being an idiot necessarily, but if the writing wants me to believe Unalaq isn’t just evil… they gotta show me proof that I don’t see.
@tambourinesmusicmachine
@tambourinesmusicmachine Жыл бұрын
@@borjankosarac3645 Unalaq's desire is to tip the balance of the world back into the hands of the spirits. Since Raava reigned for 10,000 years, he sees it as his duty to allow that same amount of time for the sprits to rule the Earth, much as they did back in Avatar Wan's age. He does seem to be driven by a hated of mankind, feeling they don't appreciate the Spirits enough. Not like how he can understand them. He chides the Southern tribe for turning their Holy Festival into a cheap carnival. Unalaq incorrectly thought that the way to restore balance was through subjugation. Forcing humanity to pay for what the first Avatar did 10,000 years ago. The true path to healing was to meet somewhere in the middle to allow Spirits and Humans to try an coexist, which is what Korra chooses ultimately.

This is what I love about the cameos in Legend of Korra. They make sense. They have a purpose. Katara mirroring what her grandmother said about leaving the South Pole makes complete sense. Of course, Aang would be there because Korra is dealing with some of Aang's mistakes. Why wouldn't Iroh offer guidance to another Avatar? Sokka didn't have to be the representative for the South Pole at the trial but it makes sense that he would be. They're not just thrown in there and they're not forgetable.

Im feeling a bit bad for the owl. He brought the library to the physical world so that humans might evolve using that gigantic knowledge but every single time they chose to abuse it. It's his library after all. I think it changed the owl and made him cynical against humans. Listening to Unalaq because he cares for the spirits (thats what the owl thinks) against Jinora who cares about humans (when in the owl's eyes humans are untrustworthy), then it makes sense.
