And every time you go 'its completely different' I prepare myself but then I'm surprised it's almost like dutch. Like the J for example. J in dutch or in Swedish is much alike

Swedish was influenced a lot by German and Dutch from the late 1300s to the 1600s. The 1600s spelling even looks Dutch, but it doesn't reflect the actual Swedish pronunciation. In the 1700s linguists and authors made great efforts to restore the original spelling or create one that sounded more like the Swedish of the 1700s, although generally speaking, if you speak Swedish with an exact (modern) spelling pronunciation, you'll come pretty close to how it sounded in the 1300s, except that u was [u] and o was [o] back then. Pronounce 'berg' with a hard g as in English and German and you have the older Old Swedish word. Pronounce h in 'hjälpa' somewhat like [x]. etc.

I've been learning Swedish since a week or two ago,and today I saw this video and Iand I finished watching it. I love the way you explain the letters with fun examples to make memorisation easier! If I could leave a tip: to do this you use a lot of foreign ideas/words, like ‘huh’ (karate-sound) and ‘pizza’, unnecessary language ‘contamination’. I think it would be more interesting and definitely more edifying if you could use examples that have sth to do with Sweden, since it would create opportunities for students to learn about different aspects of Swedish culture! Please, take this as advice, no critique! Thanks for the lesson 🙂

Thanks for your comment. We always appreciate feedback :) We see your point. The thing is that both "huh" (karate-sound) and "pizza" are Swedish words. Of course originally borrowed words but they are now also Swedish words that you need in Sweden in order to get your pizza and same thing with the "karate sound". So we would not consider it to be "contamination" since it is now part of Swedish sounds/words as well. Then this video is for those who are on a beginner level. In our teaching experience it helps to explain things using words that everyone knows about, such as pizza or "karate-sound". At least in the beginning. This is one of our most popular videos so it seems that it is still helpful for most people. But that said, your advice is still very relevant and we agree with you that it is good to include examples that are more Swedish, at least when you have an higher level than beginner. We would guess from your comment that you are not a beginner anylonger and therefore you would benefit more with other types of words than pizza. Maybe "pannbiff" or "pyttipanna" (Swedish dishes instead). Hopefully you will be able to find these types of words in our other videos. We have many videos about Swedish culture if you are interested in that :)

Thank you for sharing! I currently live in Texas U.S.A., but thus morning I woke up remembering a dream of two booths, like the old style selfie curtained photo booths. They had writing on top that appeared to be Swedish, the only letter I remembered was the A with the little o over the top, and I was fascinated to learn that this letter means small river. Interesting because my mother's maiden name is Nystrom, which I learned a few years ago means "New Stream". In my dream, these booths were actually private video playback booths. The one on the left was for a longer drone video, and the one on the right was for a drone video that was short enough to be a facebook or youtube reel, so shorter than 60 seconds for youtube, 90 seconds for facebook. I am not sure what it all means yet, but after this, I saw a vision of another paragraph of writing, but the only word I could remember from this short vision was SNUZZY, which according to the Urban dictionary is a wourd the means cute and funny at the same time, like a little animal. Another definition is being funny and snazzy at the same time. The final definition is feeling warm, happy, and good inside.

I am watching you before taking a vision test in Sweden! I wanted to make sure I can pronounce Y and U correctly so they won't think I am blind instead of me just mispronouncing letters they point at! Thank you so much. I think your explanation was no short of genius!! Can you be hired for private lessons online? I would love to learn to speak Swedish without people looking strangely at me because (understandable) they are having hard time to understand me.
