Swedish was influenced a lot by German and Dutch from the late 1300s to the 1600s. The 1600s spelling even looks Dutch, but it doesn't reflect the actual Swedish pronunciation. In the 1700s linguists and authors made great efforts to restore the original spelling or create one that sounded more like the Swedish of the 1700s, although generally speaking, if you speak Swedish with an exact (modern) spelling pronunciation, you'll come pretty close to how it sounded in the 1300s, except that u was [u] and o was [o] back then. Pronounce 'berg' with a hard g as in English and German and you have the older Old Swedish word. Pronounce h in 'hjälpa' somewhat like [x]. etc.

A tip that I found helpful in learning to pronounce å was to overlook the a and focus on the circle/ring on top. That will remind you that it is pronounced more like the long o sound in English-especially if you listen to someone from the U.S. Midwest-“Minnesota O.” 😊 I was told that long ago å was written as aa as in paa svenska. Later the two a’s were stacked and eventually the tail on the top a was lost.

Hi there. I just wanted to say thank you, for your awesome teaching style! It is really helping me. I’ve only just started learning Swedish, I have always wanted to learn, but thought it would be too difficult. Anyway, in a few weeks I’ll be 49, so I decided to finally stop making excuses….and try to teach myself, as much as I can, by the time I’m 50 😂 I haven’t told my son, who lives with me, that I’m learning, or anyone else in my real life. But, I want to visit Sweden by boat, with my son, in the next couple of years. I have a few health problems, (others have worse), but I’m determined to see Sweden, and be able to communicate with people in their native language! (and not be the lazy person from the UK, who expects everyone else to speak English 😂) HOWEVER…..here I am 30th June 2022, having “just about”, got the alphabet down 😂 …..although I confess, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this….I struggled with the I and J!! I can say the alphabet at a good pace, until I get to the I and J, then I have to slow down, and really think about them. I honestly thought it would be the å ä and ö which would trip me up, but no, it’s the “I” mostly!! Gees, I have a LONG way to go…….wish me luck?! 🙏😂 But seriously, I love the way you teach, so thank you again! Take care and stay well. Edit: It’s 3 days later, 3rd July…..and I have the alphabet down! I think I’m saying it in my sleep 😂 I wanted to be able to say it, without thinking, in any order, before I moved forward. So yay Hehe! I also have numbers 1-20 down too. This…. is going to be a LONG difficult journey 😬 but I’m determined! Edit: Yes, another one 😂 I find being transparent, keeps me motivated, I wonder how many of these “Edits” they’ll let me do?! 😂…So it’s now 1 week on, 10th July. I’ve been taking it slow, because I want to understand the grammatical rules, and pronunciation completely, and not just jump into reciting learnt sentences. I also want to be able to write in Swedish correctly. So now I’m just at the stage where I can recite the alphabet, I understand the pronunciation, I’m understanding the long and short vowel sounds, depending on if there is one or two consonants after it. I can count to, as far as I feel like going, now that I understand how to use “ton” or “tio”. I am now looking at examples of different types of words (nouns, adjectives etc…), however I’m a little overwhelmed at the idea of having to just memorise, if it’s “ett” or “en”?! There’s no rule for me to cling to! 😂 Anyway, that’s where I’m up to for now. Take care everyone.
