Furey Brothers & Davey Arthur - WHEN YOU WERE SWEET SIXTEEN . This is the 7" vinyl version of the song which was released as a single in 1981.It was produced and arranged by Finbar Furey . Their most successful single "When You Were Sweet Sixteen", became a worldwide hit, reaching #14 on the UK Singles Chart, #1 on the Irish Singles Chart and #9 on the Australian Singles Chart."When You Were Sweet Sixteen" is a popular song. It was written by James Thornton. The song was published in 1898. Its chorus:
I love you as I never loved before,
Since first I met you on the village green.
Come to me, e'er my dream of love is o'er.
I love you as I loved you
When you were sweet, when you were sweet sixteen.
The song was inspired by Thornton's wife, Bonnie, when she asked her husband if he still loved her. Thornton replied, "I love you like I did when you were sweet sixteen." The
song has been covered by many artists over the years including Glen Campbell on his 1985 album It's Just a Matter of Time
Barry Manilow, on his 2010 album The Greatest Love Songs of All Time and
Daniel O'Donnell, on his 2011 album Moon Over Ireland .

LYRICS :
When first I saw the lovelight in your eye,
I thought the world held naught but joy for me.
And even though we've drifted far apart,
I never dreamed but what I dream of thee
I love you as I've never loved before!
Since first I saw you on the village green.
Come to me, 'er my dreams of love are o'er!
I love you as I loved you,
When you were sweet,
When you were sweet sixteen.
I love you as I've never loved before!
Since first I saw you on the village green.
Come to me, 'er my dreams of love are o'er!
I love you as I loved you,
When you were sweet,
When you were sweet sixteen.

I was only 16 and he was 19 when I seriously began courting Patrick and now we have been married for 40 years and counting. We actually met when I was 14 and he 17 one summer, broke up and got back together two years later. We both knew we were made for one another and we were right - this song encapsulates those lovely early years. It is my favourite song and this video brings those old days flooding back. Thankyou to Furey Brothers and Davey Arthur for giving this song to the world

Reminds me of the springtime of life, all hopes and dreams awaiting to be realised, like the buds on plants awaiting to flower. And for balance: For many a flower is born to blush unseen and waste it's sweetness on the desert air.

Same here I was 15 he 19. He knew how old I was because I spent a lot of time at his mother's babysitting etc. He told me he would marry me one day even before we started dating. He proposed after I finished school four weeks after my 16 th birthday we married. That was 52 years ago on list at valentine's day, He's all I've ever needed or wanted. Folk say marrying young dooms your life. Well we both finished the education, both attended uni both did double degrees. I later returned to do a second set of doubles. Both had excellent careers in our differing fields. Both reached highest levels possible. I actually lectured internationally. We raised three children first born 5 years after we married much to the dismay of the finger counters. We're retired now and totally enjoying the fact that we are once again living alone. You know what I'd do it all again tomorrow even knowing what lay ahead.
