I know the previous owner of this car. It was my grandpa’s who was my next door neighbour in Walthamstow. It was his son’s company car in which the son did lots of motorway miles. The son then gave this car to his dad (the owner). Grandpa had the car for a very long time and as he is an elderly man he mostly drove it to play golf and for shopping. Grandpa loved his car and really looked after it. He use to pay me and my siblings money to help him clean the car. Grandpa and grandma also had a pet dog named Suzy, hence the dog hair you found. In 2015 grandpa and grandma had to move to care home so that’s when he sold the car. The car was then just parked up till now. Grandpa is still alive and well, I look forward to showing him this video when I see him again. He will be happy to see these videos. Also if you plan to sell the car please let me know I will be interested. Great work you have done ❤

Hi Sharon (?) Thats incredible you've seen this video and know the car, I first thought it must have been a company car, so many LX spec ones were. It looks like it was very well looked after, even serviced and cleaned before it was parked which has preserved it well. The plan for this car is to sell it once its done - Id love to keep it but I have too many and it would be amazing to have it back in its family. Please drop me an email at bodyintheboot@gmail.com with your contact details and we can keep in touch about it

Ye maybe the reason it has not been driven for 7 years is because of the problems you are now having and them people did not have the skills or knowledge to sort it. It's almost like the pump needs it's own power source. Maybe the car is just not sending power to it maybe a fuse gone?

Hi Matt, That was fantastic. You may have heard this already, but as an electronics engineer, I can tell you that it takes almost no current to get a voltage reading on a digital meter. So even if you have a very poor or high resistance connection, you can still measure the full 12V when the load (fuel pump) is disconnected. When the fuel pump was plugged back in, the connections could not provide enough current to operate the pump. If you had been able to measure across the connector with the pump in circuit, then you would have seen a very low voltage. The fact that the poor connection cured itself, makes me suspect that it was a tarnished relay contact. It will probably be fine now, because once the contact works enough to supply a bit of current then it becomes self cleaning so to speak. Keep up the good work, I'm really enjoying your enthusiasm for tinkering in the cold, I'll think of that when I consider whether or not to brave the cold this weekend and tinker with my Morris Minor. Cheers Andy

Stuart, I love British humour and eccentricity and it's entertaining watching you working on the lid of a rubbish bin in arctic conditions and driving over the flower bed but I think it's time that little garage closest to your house became a small workshop. I'm a former mechanic from the 60's and 70's and recently set up a tiny workshop in my 10 feet by 18 feet carport here in Australia. It has made a world of difference and I can now take on almost any job out of the weather (blazing tropical sun in my case).
@smallmip

Try checking the fuel pump relay and the the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box. Even if the fuse is ok. If they have corroded due to damp you will get the voltage you need at the pump but you won't get the current to run it. It may work for now but a bit of contact cleaner will probably sort it permanently. Good Luck.

Back in 2005/2006 when I was a taxi driver, I drove several mk2 Mondeos. The first one I had was an S-reg white 1.8TD LX. The best one I had was a met green V-reg 1.8TD GLX saloon. I loved the electric sunroof of the GLX. My uncle had an L-reg mk1 in met green and he said it was a great car. When my dad was working and was away on business, he always asked his boss to specifically supply a Mondeo. My dad loved the Mondeo. The side profile of the the mk1/mk2 Mondeo reminds me of a mk3 Cortina. Personally, I love Mondeos and strangely enough, many other people do as well.

Yes, that was my first thought. Also they can start to click on and off very rapidly - making and breaking the circuit - when they start to fail, which causes havoc with the fuel pump itself, leading that to fail as well - as indeed had happened with this car. I wonder if an "on-off-on-off-on-off" issue and subsequent/consequent pump failure was why the car was dumped by the previous owner. Anyway definitely worth even just temporarily swapping the pump relay with a similarly-rated one in the car and driving the car around for a few minutes just as a quick experiment.

Total joy when it started up, that's the sign of a true petrol head. Your enthusiasm is absolutely and totally refreshing. Little tip for you Matt from an electrician.. When you're proving electrical feeds to anything on a car , use a small bulb (5w is ideal) on a pair of long leads(speaker wire it fine) so you can see it from where you are. A multimeter takes miniscule current, so you may have voltage, but a high resistance joint on the cabling will stop a decent amount of current reaching the device. A 5w bulb puts just under half an amp of current thro the cabling. A 21w bulb just under 2 amps if the wiring will stand it. Used this method for years, it's worked well for me and helped find bad plug/socket connections, bad earth's , essentially any high resistance joint that stops the device getting the ooomph it needs.

How cool that the original owner’s granddaughter has been in touch! Absolutely LOVE the Mondeo and I’m not at all surprised that it has had such a positive and huge amount of comments and likes. Such an honest and loveable car - a survivor! As I mentioned on the previous video, that 1.8 litre Zetec is one hell of a good engine - reliable, torquey, rev-happy, excellent on fuel yet very peppy and cheap to fix, not over-complicated either. Fab video Matt!

Might be some corrosion on the pins of the plug but what's more likely is that the wires are corroded or burned internally which could have happened when the old fuel pump died. They might still be good enough to get some voltage through but fail when a lot of current is drawn. So i would try cleaning the plug first, if that doesn't work, replace the cables. Good job so far though, mondeo already looks great and i love the series with the restoration of cars! Looking forward to the mini videos too.

Try using a test light instead of a multi meter to check voltage to pump, if there is a poor wire to feed the pump it may still allow voltage through enough to show voltage on a meter,

I do love car rescue videos. This was a good one. Re- electrical problems: Do not rely on a digital multimeter to tell you whether a circuit can handle load. What you experienced there, was due to resistance in the wiring. Probably a bad connection in the fuse or pump relay contacts (as the car had been standing). A digital meter will show voltage when there is no load on the circuit. Resistance will make it disappear as soon as you put a load on it. It is usually better to check for power, using an incandescent bulb, like a stop lamp bulb (Not LED). Then you will know if the wiring can actually handle a current draw. Please recheck the fuse and relay, incase that fault comes back to bite you. (or the new owner).

Interesting dragging this gem back from the dead!! For those experiencing a similar issue. The fuel pump circuit is a fairly simple one by today's standards. Relay K4 in the battery junction box is controlled by the engine ECU and will activate when the key is turned to on for about a second. So no need to keep cranking to test fuel pump/prime. When the engine is cranked/running the ECU will activate the relay and run the pump. So you should hear the relay click for about a second when you key on. If this is ok then the output from this relay feeds fuse F14 (15A Blue) and then off to the inertia switch, and from there off to the fuel pump. Use an incandescent test lamp to follow the fuel pump feed as corrosion can fool an LED test lamp or DMM. My guesses would be duff relay with corroded contacts (swap with one in the fuse box), corroded connection, corroded fuse etc....Liberal use of WD40 :) Oh and on my Mondeo the brake pipe corroded just up behind the fuel tank!! I have a local mechanic bridge the section out using a pipe kit. It would have been a swine to follow original routes...

That might have been corrosion on the plug pins, which deleted itself by undoing the plug several times. If the error ever occurs again, just try hitting the pins with some high-grid sandpaper or a small wire brush, that might do the job. Nonetheless, I'm loving this series! Keep up the great work.

Matt - The king of the premature celebration. Also, on an ironic note about the fuel pump situation, Matt said "What on EARTH is wrong".... Might be onto something there without even realising it. Pump gets 12v, and works when tested directly to battery + and - but not necessarily earthing well enough on the cars loom for the pump to run.

It is good that it is working now. As for why it did not do so previously, I think it is to fair to channel a bit of Hubnut and say "Because Ford". I and my family have owned lots of Fords over the years (Tauruses, Sables, T-Bird, Cougar, Focuses, Escorts, Fiesta and Escape (called Kuga in the UK) and there seems to be things that Fords do that leave you scratching your head (one minute something don't work and the next it does). On my Mercury Sable, the passenger side front power window. That same day, i opened that door to get things out and the inside of the door got soaked by the rain. Well the window now worked and kept working for the next 10 years until I got rid of the car. As for your remark about how small the Mondeo was compared to the benz, that pretty much is the reason the US market version of the Mondeo (Ford Contour/ Mercury Mystique) failed as Ford was selling it as a midsize and it was nowhere near that size

Always be cautious when using a D V M to measure voltages in vehicles , they are way to sensitive ,and will say 12v even if there is a huge resistance in the wiring ( bad earth or connector). Best to use a test lamp. The motor in the pump will need several amps to run , and just an ohm or so resistance will kill it.

Loved this series. I had a mk2 Mondeo and took it to 160,000 miles with next to no issues. My dad had an early mk1 2.0 that did 195k. They’re great cars. The pump feed issue is weird. It could just be corrosion on the plug terminals that breaking and remaking the connection a few times cleaned off. Might be worth splitting the connector again and spraying a bit of WD40 or similar on the pins. Problem with faults like this that seem to fix themselves before you can nail them down is that you have no way of knowing if they’re going to randomly reoccur.

I'd have a 50p bet on the plug on the harness - it's the one thing you've not counted. Everything works separately, but when you connect the two, it doesn't. The old pump had siezed meaning low resistance, meaning lots of heat... that could've been enough to make one of the pins for the pump not pass power. Hopefully REALLY simple to resolve. WELL colour me wrong!! Hadn't watched till the end. I did love my old Mondeo, glad you're giving this one a new chance of life. Once i had the opportunity to get this model with the V6 engine, I worked for free at an used car garage with the possibility to use the garage and take the trade ins for free to get them fixed with mot. Sadly i was scared by the engine size and the fuel cost and ended up with the first gen Twingo that is an really well driven charming little gem. But i would take the Mondeo V6 today that sadly ended up as the kids plaything on the neighboring field. What i like about this particular model is the batmobile look. Most Fords are just so well designed, or was. Todays cars are just blops with aggressive sculpted headlights to make up for an boring technic under the hood that drive you and not the other way around.

You need to make a test light out of a headlight bulb (the old non halogen ones are best) . That way you can load the circuit with 5 Amps or so. The problem with a digital meter is its only loads the circuit by 10 M Ohms, therefore it can measure voltages through damp broken connections giving false results.

TOP JOB Matt. That was weird. Now you have a contact from the previous owner. Incredible. Every one is loving this. Not a 7 day flip……but you getting views and subs. so it all good. 👍

Yes, I'm liking the Mondeo series. There might still be an issue with the fuel pump; could be a dodgy relay or a loose earth wire.

Thanks Matt for this Mondeo series. It really has gripped me in a way that another person would be gripped by a good weekly televised drama! I remember these cars being everywhere when I was young. Now, I barely see any.

A few months back I purchased a 2001 mk2 Mondeo LX as a project, it’s currently off the road until I weld a new sill to it 😂 but hoping to have it all sorted by the new year, it’s honestly great to see another Mondeo being saved from the scrap! 👍

There may be a partially broken wire coming to the fuel pump connector, this will give you 12 volts on your multimeter but no amps to actually run the pump,

Ford zetec engines are the best, nothing compares in an everyday car that most have either driven or know someone who has had one. As a focus mk1 owner I am so frustrated by the ease of access to the fuel pump on a mk2 mondeo... there's no access in a mk1 and a tank drop job!!! Lovely to see a very much appreciated ford these days after many years of being in bangernomics terrartory. The views your getting is no surprise, anything ford in the 90s is popular at the moment.

I suspect the electrical fault is further upstream of the connector. if you measure the voltage at the connector whilst connected to the car and switched on I expect you will find there is not 12volts at the connector when the Motor is connected. This would imply high resistance in the circuit, possibly the connector itself (Loose Pins or corroded) or the fault is further along the circuit ! - Relay contacts eroded or other connection fault causing the high resistance. This would be confusing to diagnose as there could be a voltage detected with a meter ! but when the Motor tries to run there will not be enough current to drive it. Either way at least you have proved the pump works when directly powered. awesome video's and looking forward to the next.

This was my exact thoughts too, although the multi meter shows 12v under load there maybe a bad joint etc allowing the amps to drop hence not enough to run the pump.

Once had an old Primera that failed to proceed right in the middle of a house move , used the same method as you, with a spare battery connected direct to the pump managed a 250 mile trip with the pump happily buzzing away. I later found a stuck relay , swapped it with the identical HRW relay and it worked fine for another year😄 thanks for great budget content ..

Great video. My Dad owned a 1.8LX mark 2 Mondeo in the mid 90,s and I drove it for a few days on loan while my Renault Savanna had a new gearbox fitted in Croydon. My Dad owned his mondeo from new and loved the comfort and reliability. Love the video. Good blue colour. Should sell easy.

Haven't got to part 6 yet where the car is already running but at this point I would've checked the Fuse after replacing the pump, Last video the relay was working fine, sometimes a fuse could be preventing power going to the fuel pump! great channel thanks for your content :)

good to see it running , sometimes if a car has been sat for a number of years , it will take a few minutes for fuel to pump through the system .

Morning Rework / bend the pins in the wiring connector ( only the pins that supply the actual pump ) if that doesn’t work use a test light ( 12 v ) over the power and earth of the supply to the pump if the lights the bulb to the correct brightness the wiring to the pump is ok if the light is dull there’s a problem with the car side electrics 👍 Hope this helps 👍

Make up a high current test light consisting of a headlight bulb holder (and 55W bulb) with a couple of decent length wires, then connect them into the fuel pump plug on the car, turn the ignition on to see if the test light lights, if yes then you know everything is correct on the car, if it lights dimly then there is a high resistance in the circuit which will probably be the relay or fuse, just because it reads 12V doesnt mean there is enough Amps to power the motor. Edit- It was probably a bad connection at the pump and you removing and attaching it has probably cleaned it enough to make a better connection, probably worth hitting it with some electrical contact cleaner to improve things even more, but excellent to see it running correctly.

Digital meters have such a high input impeadance that they'll read voltage, even when the circuit isn't good. Use a tail light bulb instead. You may have had a dirty contact on the fuel pump relay.
