The Ford S-Max was a new, cooler take on the MPV people carrier genre, still spacious but better to drive and look at but in April 2023 Ford ended production with nbc replacement Farewell S Max.

Every 3rd car used to be a Ford when I was a young lad. Now every 3rd car is a Hyundai or a Kia. It isn't necessarily the SUV that has killed off Ford's range, it's Ford.

In 2010, I inherited a gen1 S-Max from a colleague who had left the company. It was less than 12 months old, disgustingly dirty and I spent an entire day cleaning it. I hated that car, because by definition I hate all people carriers and SUVs. Yet over the next few years, I came to respect the engineering team for what they had produced: a barge that really can hustle. As a family, we found ourselves overtaking hard, using hairpins as slingshots and generally scaring lesser people off the road as we made our way. The S-Max was a brilliant thing, and I will mourn its passing. My Tomtom used to live in that front quarter light window. Oh,the memories. Every single interaction was well judged and weighted. A driver’s car doesn’t have to be a 2 seater.

Great car, especially with the 2.5t Volvo engine fitted! I was a Ford salesman in Chester back in 2006 when the new 007 film, Casino Royale, came out. Daniel Craig was from Chester, so the city hosted the regional premiere of the film and Daniel Craig’s parents were the guests of honour. My dealership chauffeured them to the cinema in an S-Max as it was the newest, coolest thing at the time!

We are on our second, and it turns 10 this year, having owned for 7 years our one was the slight refresh of the 1st one and the plastics on centre console wearing much better despite being piano black, amazing car, handles well, reasonably economical, and incredibly practical.. not sure how or what we would replace it with… epic for filling with kids, dog and piles of stuff to hammer through France - nice video

The higher seating position was the main reason for many people to buy an MPV, I think: most of the former MPV-people now buying an SUV seems to say that anyway. The extra room and practicality was a bonus and not as much a necessity. Even then though, it seems there are still quite a few people who would buy an MPV if they were still around, enough for, say, 2 brands (Renault?) to still produce them. That's the thing these days with European car manufacturers: they all seem to be targetting the same customer now and don't notice other potential customers. Killing all variety in cars and car types in the process and acting like one big heard of sheep. And what Ford is (not) up too these days, is too strange for words: determining what the market wants always used to be their great strength, as was so beautifully shown by the S-max. Along with the last 2 Renault espace generations, I still think it's the best looking MPV ever made.

Just FYI. Ford intend to build the Explorer electric SUV in the old Fiesta production lines. I think they worked out that selling 50,000 euro SUV's makes more than 15,000 euro superminis. I really wish the SUV craze would end.

Great review Matt. We had 2 both from new - first a 57 plate 2.0 litre manual 140 bhp titanium. Ran that one to 2014 when we got number 2 a 2.0 litre manual with the 163 bhp upgraded engine. Got the electric memory seat pack and IR windscreen. They are great dog cars - very low boot with masses of space. We took the 3rd row seats out to make the boot even larger. No spare wheel unfortunately. The 2.0 litre engines were the DW10 built in France by PSA. Absolutely bullet proof if maintained properly. Big solid heavy cars that were brilliant in the snow if fitted with winter tyres. Great driving position and big supportive seats. Both cars averaged 41 mpg and were very reliable. Factor in replacement front wheel bearings and new brake discs every 40-50k miles. Replaced earlier this year by a Toyota RAV4.

Well done Matt a great review as ever I remember having one as a courtesy car when my Focus was in the garage with gearbox issues it was actually the sales managers car! I loved driving it very much it was comfortable and as the diesel it picked up really well it was practical especially as my son was a baby and had lots of bits and pushchair we had it for two weeks and didn’t want to give it back the only downside was the size which made it hard to park at home (which is why we had a focus) and the boot opened very high but such a lovely car I will be sad at it’s passing not sure what fords are doing at the moment

I will mourn the S-Max. Car manufactorers are killing off the good cars, and it makes me equally sad and angry. I've had the pleasure of being a passenger in S-Maxes a few times, every time a 2L diesel with the auto gearbox, which is how i'd have one if i needed the space. Absolutely lovely car to be driven around in. I have a lot of love for the S-Max. When it looked like i might need more room i was seriously considering a Galaxy, because of the expoeriences i've had with the S. Great platform for sure. Ending such a car is moronic.

Quite agree with your comment re manufacturers now days, they are all channeling us into a mid size SUV and telling us that what people want. What they don’t tell you is that since 2020 that’s all they’ve been building, so it’s more of a case that it’s what they want you to want.

At one pont many years ago, I was on the verge of a semi pro photographer carrying lights, back grounds and a bunch of camera kit in the back of my old Mondeo estate and it was brilliant. I was looking at changing to an MPV like the S Max but a full time job change ended that as I no longer had the time. It's a real shame that this class of car has almost gone. The nearest to it is the van based options like the brilliant Berlingo and its clones but now these are all electric with limited range for a travelling snapper. As I'm no longer trying to get into the professional photography business as I'm getting on a bit and my bones and other bits creak amongst other things so I'll stick to my SUV for comfort. A sad day for the loss of another great car. RIP S Max production.

At one stage in my life I would have doubted your sanity buying an MPV but with the deluge of SUV's on the market and how bad they are for interior space I eat my words, what a great idea. I also think it's one of the best designs for electric cars, MPV's with flat floors are great for camping in and all sorts. I no longer bother watching videos about new cars as they all seem to be SUV's.

I love this generation of Fords. All my friend's Dads had them as company cars. One had an S Max but the other had a 2009 Mondeo Titanium X Sport Diesel. I was there on the first day he got it and I was so impressed. I loved the interior with the digital dashboard and the space. It had real refinement and nice build but it was exciting on the country roads and the chassis had a real fluidity to it. In my opinion much better than the C Class we had at the time. We have a Focus diesel at work and that is also such a good car. Not sure about current Fords though and the last Mondeo..

What's going on at Ford Europe? Fiesta, Ka, Focus, Mondeo all killed off and now the S-Max. A curse on the marketing folk who have forced us into SUVs which are so big and heavy and impractical when compared to an MPV. SUV's squander their height "advantage" and are IMHO one of the worst motoring inventions ever. Or is Ford USA just sticking two fingers up at Europe as our politicians want us to ditch petrol and diesel, unlike the USA

The decision for Ford to drop all passenger car body styles apart from the Mustang in North America was taken first I believe, so Ford Europe could be following on from that with no longer any economies of scale to share development costs on Fiestas, Focuses, S-Maxes etc?

He bought it in 2018 fsh etc. He was chuffed as buggery to have a nice well looked after car, ( he used to buy his garages part exes as projects). After around the first mot the ecu gave up and he got it reprogrammed and was fine for a few months when the bcm packed up etc.etc. These issues went on at great expense for 2years. It became a running joke, that my freelander 1 is more reliable.......... He sold the car after 2 and a bit years only to find out a few months later the car shredded its timing belt on the A303 and was scrapped. I still have my petrol freelander and love it 👍

Still genuinely perplexed by what these are for and why so many people bought them. The Galaxy had all the same seats, drove the same, handled the same but had much more space, in terms of load and headroom for the rear seat row. So why would you want less headroom and space if you're buying a family wagon? Also, for both the S-max and Galaxy... infuriatingly Ford seemed to design them specifically NOT to be a transit equivalent... the floor between the plastic around rear turrets is 118cm wide, i.e. 2cm narrower than standard construction timber and plasterboard. This MUST have been a deliberate choice, to stop it robbing sales from the Transit & Connect. They do drive REALLY well for a people-carrier though.

I own a very similar model , same engine but minimal lower trim level (no color display instruments, no cruise control - unfortunately). From a practical perspective, best car I ever owned. Never left me stranded on the motorway bank, carried me, my family and loads of luggage crisscrossing across europe, from scotland to tuscany. Only source of trouble: the exhaust gas purification and soot filter installation. expensive to change which is due about all 120tkm. The motor control does some kind of cleaning cycles for the filter - if these are interrupted (short distance driving), unburned fuel leaks into the oil and dilutes it with potentially catastrophic consequences - so look out for higher oil levels than normal! The interior materials are robust but look terrible (they get water stains) - but the Ford interiors and materials were always infamously bland. Ride, handling, performance and fuel economy are all great, on the other hand.

As I have said before the last great decade for the average car buyer who wanted a large choice of bodystyles was the 1980's In the 1990's Car manufacturers all saw the success of Chrysler and Renault with their vans with seats 'MPV's' and all of them started pumping out badly made cheap plastic filled vans with seats in all sizes When estate cars were always safer, more practical and not full of pointless gadgets Into the 21st century they all noticed the success of the soft off-road cars 'SUV's' And now the sheeple all buy their horrendous SUV's as that is what everyone else buys We used to have many body styles, colours, designs and manufacturers Car makers realised that the sheeple will buy anything and so they just produce crap that your average idiot who has no interest in their car will buy The only cars left now with any design, colour or enjoyment are either classics or expensive cars £50,000 plus

"Car makers realised that the sheeple will buy anything and so they just produce crap that your average idiot who has no interest in their car will buy" That seems a rather cynical analysis! It could -- rather -- be as simple as the Ford Puma so outsells the Ford Fiesta and the Ford Escape so outsells the Ford Mondeo estate or S-Max (likewise for the CR-V outselling the Honda Accord estate), that therefore there is simply *not a compelling business case* for the non-SUV styles? As much as the auto makers could tell prospective buyers about the superior aerodynamics and superior handling of the lower body styles, most buyers don't seem to care.
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo Жыл бұрын
@@darthvirago "my favourite car shape is a two door coupe." Honda held out with still selling Accord coupes and Civic coupes in North America for as long as possible (until 2018 and 2021 respectively IIRC) but eventually they had to throw in the towel, it wasn't worth the expense of a separate body style for such low sales. These days most of the coupes and 3-door hatchbacks based on ordinary cars are gone -- be it Megane coupe, Scirocco, no more three-door Golf, no more three-door Focus (soon no more Focus at all!), no more three-door Civic, no more aptly named Kia Koup etc. The numbers don't add up anymore. [Those seeking a coupe "style" seem to prefer 5-door "SUV coupes" like the Renault Arkana instead of actual coupes -- yikes!]

The reg was pl07 jxt I can say that as it got killed by a tree sadly then we had a 2012 bmw 3 series touring as a hire car it was quick but didn't feel I belonged in it same as the mondeo. The the mondeo also had massive sporty alloys too. Proper comfortable aswell the mondeo was. Its awful, all the silver has come off ours. Whoever designed those buttons deserves the same treatment you and Chrissie gave to that ungrateful waiter.

@stephen7658 Haha, very true. There was a craze for silver for whatever reason. Remember, when TVs and DVD players, etc, went silver and ended up looking very cheap and nasty.

I’m pretty sure the X-Type Jag used the same platform as well? Big shame that Ford has basically stuck there fingers up at their whole customer base. Let’s hope they know what they’re doing.

I'm 3 minutes in and I have to say it....what the heck happened to those wheels!? That is the worst pain job I've ever seen 😂 In fairness to Ford, other than the overdone silver plastics on the centre stack, its quite handsome and inoffensive for an S'A'V (MPV). Popular and with the 5 pot actually not a bad noise!

For a car aimed at families and selling on practicality and convenience it always struck me as strange that so much prime real estate was given over to that huge, gimmicky handbrake.

I went test driving a 2.5T in 2010, needless to say it didn’t impress after my MK1 Octavia vRS and I returned home in the Skoda. Lighter much more lively to drive than the Ford.

Ofcourse it’s lighter the Skoda weighs 1300 kg and the Ford 1700 kg. Comparing apples with oranges.

I preferred the standard Ford S-Max with five seats, not the Ford Grand S-Max with seven seats. The third row of the seven seat Ford Grand S-Max is only really suitable for very young children, if you want to carry seven adults, you're better off with the Ford Galaxy that's also been recently discontinued.

Is there any core difference between the S-Max and the Galaxy?

very similar bones but the S Max is smaller and better to drive

only difference is from the Windows upward (Galaxy is higher -> roomier). Even the Owners Manual covers both models.

You seem to have your logic a bit backward. SUVs are what people buy so that’s what they make. In the early 2000s it was all MPVs like the S Max but no one buys them now. Things change, sadly not always how we want them to. But there’s nothing wrong with an SUV - I’ve offered you a drive in my Jag F Pace SVR before. Take me up on it and then tell me SUVs are no fun!! Cheers Matt. Keep up the good work- and when are you going to finish the Crown Vic?

Posh... ? Nah, it's a Ford, it only takes a very little while to realize it's all ersatz. And yet, my neighbour has a 2005 reg. one these, and I really like the interior layout and styling. The outside.. ? Difficult to tell really. It has so many battle scars that nowadays people avoid parking next to it at the supermarket car parks.

I buy cars at the very bottom of the market, and 5 years ago when I was shopping round to replace an almost dead 1st-gen Kia Carens, almost all the Zafiras I found in my price range had blown head gaskets and/or were non-runners. I ended up buying a Renault Grand Scenic with wobbly suspension and worn-out brakes instead.

I am absolutely gutted! I used to like the MPV's. Some were really versatile and you could do interesting things with them. All we've got is just bloody overpriced, overpowered SUV's and Battery EV's now.

Ditched another great large family wagon, in favour of a same same same ugly unpractical SUV , I saw a Hyundai and a Nissan SUV next to each other and they looked almost the same 🤦‍♂️ I really am not a fan the duff SUVs, unless it’s a proper one eg Land Rover .
