I've always wondered why I would choose the gold over the nickel plated hooks because of the price difference! Based on the look alone, I have really wanted the gold, but could not justify the expense. With only the slight differences that you point out here, I will probably stick with the nickle. It was so good to hear your professional perspective though! Thanks!

Thanks for a great review! I have wanted to get an Odyssey hook for some time now but will probably wait for a sale. I will get the nickel plated because of the price. I’d rather get 2 for the price of 1 gold. That being said, if crochet were my job I’d definitely consider the gold plated one. But it’s not. I find it odd that the I hook is longer. I wonder why that is? Thanks again!

They look really nice. They just don't go down to a small enough hook size for me. I do mostly doilies and use thread size 10 and below...so the largest hook size I use is 2 mm.

I agree the nickel Odyssey hooks are the best I have ever used. I have QUITE the collection, my most frequently used hook sizes in a few colors each. I have 3 different gold finish and I do not see enough difference worth the double price. The nickel finish Odyssey hooks are amazing enough for me! I was “hooked” from my first purchase.

Love Furls! They’re all I use anymore . I own 1 gold plated and the rest are the nickel plated. I really can’t tell too much of a difference personally. And because the gold is double the money, nickel will always be my first choice. BTW - I have a lime coming Tuesday! Lucky you to have Furls send you freebies!😄

I have several Odyssey hooks. One of the things that really bothers me about them is that they aren’t the same length. Also, the hook tips on them are all different in some way, and that does bother me as well. They aren’t consistent. They are beautiful though, and I like the weight and the thick handle.

Before spending the money on FURLS, because I am in my 70s now, I will try to form a Sculpey baked, weighted with metal, handle encased in the polymer. Then shape the taper close my Boye and Susan Bates 1.5 inch tips have. My heart wants the nickel but I have to try since I own many hooks.

I own the ROSE-gold and my nickel plated one is slicker than the rose gold one. I also learned that the company has stopped producing the rose-gold too.

Thanks for the informative video! I too love the Odyssey's over the others. I have heard complaints about the weight, but I think people are not holding them correctly. I figured out how to hold it correctly early on and I see you hold yours the exact same way. Honestly, I do not even feel the weight of it that way and I cannot believe how much faster I can crochet. Huge plus, obviously!!! Since you have demonstrated both the nickel and gold for comparison, I too am going to stick with the nickel. Again, thank you so much for this video.

Hi I got the purple and the pearl white odyssey hook I like them they're very nice they're not the gold plated to the nickel plated but they were really nice thank you thank you for your tutorial

I just got one gold and one nickle and I can confirm that the heads are a little different on mine as well. I'd say if you feel like treating yourself, you won't regret getting a gold, but if you can't, the nickle ones are still amazing!

I was just going to purchase this one after seeing the release a couple days ago but decided to wait because I have several hooks already and will be receiving two more in a day or two. I will add this one to my collection eventually. I wanted to try the rose gold finish but the price...not now, maybe later. The reason I didn't push is because I'm finding them a bit difficult to use. There seems to be a bit of a learning curve for me. They are beautiful and the nickel finish is excellent to work with, but I've found that my clover amour hooks serve my purposes for now. However, I would like to try the rose gold hook- just because.

Hi Pamela! I also found that there was a learning curve for me. I had to get used to the shaft length, and the fact that there is not a flat area on the handle like most hooks. Once I found the position and rotation angle that I liked best, it was much easier for me to use. I hope this helps!

I own two Odyssys, and plan to order at least one more. Each size has its own color...just like my Clover Amours.. I love the extra weight... I actually prefer the nickel to the gold.. I like the way the nickel looks... I won’t be ordering anythung in gold... regardless of the price. I agree with you on length.. Most of the other Furls hooks are longer than the Odyssys... and I am certain I prefer the shorter shaft to a longer one... It just works for me..

I’ve not tried Furls. Mainly because I crochet both hand hold styles, leaning more to the pencil grip than knife hold... I use Clovers, and I will on occasion get cramps in my fingers from pencil hold. I would have issues with the Furls handles because they too are slick and as I’ve aged I have a “smoothness” to my hands and fingers, so without grip I’d drop the hook. I keep an almost no grip, grip to keep my stitches and hands relaxed

Unfortunately, this hook didn’t work good for me it looks giant in my fingers (I am a knife holder) additionally, surprisingly the hook tip does not slip smooth on threads. Actually clover amour is much better.

Thanks for the review. I was really stuck on which to buy. When I looked at my current collection, I noticed all my files are gold. I bought them for comfort and aesthetics. I’m not a professional crocheter as you but I’m wondering how well the gold hook holds up. I’ve heard from some the gold wares off after some time. I would love to hear you feedback after extended use of your gold hook.

With the furs crochet you get a unique crochet hook because is handmade . I have the same hooks size but the legh and the tip are different not matter what.

WOW! The price. Not going to be adding any Odyssey to my collection. My girls and I are horrible allergic to nickel (makes us go numb) and the rose gold is just not justifiable.

They look like nice crochet hooks but I think what stops me from getting confused one to try out, is the price. It's too expensive to pay for one crochet hook let alone wanting to get them in a set.

Thanks! THAT is interesting! First: I've got the tunisian set of Chiaogoo and l was so disappointed of the head/top of them! They're so much rounded! I compared them with them of Knit Pro whidh are wonderful shabed and so l becan to file one after the other heads moreshabed, then l polished and l polished the whole needle. That took about 3 hours and within some pauses cause my hand cramped a lot. Now my hooked needles are great! If this wouldnzt have been worked l'd have cut both, not square but a bit in the length, so that l'd have glued my Knit Pro hooked - needless to the screw ends of Chiaoggo. I did so with a length of a 7.5 mm needle Chiaogoo and 7,5 mm hook of Knit Pro Bamboo to get a 7,5 mm hook for my crochet set l couldn't buy. I loäe to make things fit. l often need hooked needles together with the cable, sometimes one side is a needle, one side a hook for crochet beginnings of sock - cuffs and with this construction l don't need to bring the stitches one by one to the knit cable! Then l knit and create my socks cuff down, or, what l love way more, first l knit toe up and l end up with tunisian crocheting the last few rows with a curve - formed cuff It's so great to work with now! Second: A needle to sew with having a golden eye sews better, it goes through thefabric a lot softer! The same with the hooks, yes, it IS a difference,but it's too much moremoney, so l can'tbuy them all with golden heads! To rubb them time by time through your hair or with a little sheet for glasses make the hooks go nicer through the wool. It's worth to try it, l had the tipp from a very good knitter. I knit and crochet since more than over 43 years. I learn and learn:) Have a nice time and stay healthy, well and saved by the Lord!

Hi! Right now, they do have 4 mm hooks in nickel, in black, red, purple, turquoise, blue, yellow, white, and lime. The shafts of the Odysseys do not tend to be as long as the Streamlines. I hope this helps!

I have a smaller furls Odyssey in nickel. When I place it in the hook sizer from Clover, the shaft is only 4mm for a short distance before it flares out. My stitches are stretched. Everything else about this hook I love. In our video, the 5mm-6mm hooks, the shaft appears to keep its size fora longer distance. Your thoughts? Do you have a 4mm and smaller?

Hi Stacy. The smallest Odyssey hook I have is an F / 3.75mm. Yes, the smaller sizes do flare out closer to the tip, not because they are inconsistent, but because the shaft has much farther to flare to reach the diameter of the top of the handle. While the loops on your hook must pass the throat of the hook tip to reach the correct size, it can help to not slide the hook as far when moving it back and forth to crochet. Then, the loops don't go up the hook far enough to be affected by the flare of the shaft. On the smaller hooks, I don't find the flare to be a problem, since the stitches themselves are shorter as well and do not have to slide up the shaft as far to get the lowest loops of the stitch past the throat. Hi Robin. The stitches used in the swatches are just lace stitches from a stitch dictionary, so to my knowledge, they do not have commonly known names. I hope this helps!

Hi! I currently store my Furls hooks in this case: amzn.to/3d280f7 (The one I have is black.) It has two sides with large elastic slots that are a good size for the Furls hooks. The case is also the right width for the length of the hooks. There are two sides that unzip, so it's like having 4 "pages" with slots, but you can only put hooks on one "page" of each zipper side of the case. (It's meant to be a pencil case with several pencils per slot, and these hooks are much thicker than pencils.) This case will hold up to 20 Furls hooks, 10 on each zipped side. I have been using it for awhile now, and it is of good quality. The outside is kind of hard, so I think it protects the hooks pretty well. I hope this helps!

Hi Denise! As long as the hooks are taken care of, I don't think the gold plating would chip or wear off unless it was dropped on a hard surface or something like that. All of my Odysseys feel like the plating is good quality. Also, if you ever have problems with the hook, their customer service is great! I had a nickel Odyssey that I had bought several years ago, and it seemed to have developed a slightly cloudy-looking area on the nickel surface. So I emailed them and asked what might have caused that, and if perhaps I had not stored it properly or something, and they sent me a replacement even though the original hook was still perfectly usable. I hope this helps!

I have a gold plated hook (I wanted pink and they do not come in nickel playing yet) and have used it to make a couple blankets, but that is all so far for that particular hook. It has started to “wear off” actually. If I could, I would post a picture to show. I have not noticed that on any of my nickel plated hooks. I plan to only get nickel plated hooks and only got the gold because I wanted a pink handle. When they offer a pink nickel plated hook, I will get that replace the gold one.

Jessica Dodson I did the same thing. My favorite color is pink and I know I drive my family crazy with my need for things to be pink. I wanted a pink Furl's crochet hook so bad. As soon as I got my stimulus check I was online buying a Furl's crochet hook. I wanted it to be pink so bad that I got one of the only sizes they had left, a 10mm. The problem is that I don't get to enjoy it enough because I mostly work with lighter weight yarn and spend way more time with a 6.5mm or 6mm hook in my hand. I also was so rushed that I didn't wait for a sale or even search for a promo code. I know I want another in pink that will get way more use but unless they send me another stimulus check I will be waiting for a really good sale and the pink to come in nickel finish before I jump up and rush back to the Furl's website.

@@kricketcooper5024 I am ALL about the pink too! But I'm holding out for a pink in the nickel for my first Odyssey. I'm a bit reluctant because of the weight. I have the larger sizes of streamlined swirls and I love them and I LOVE the weight. Odyssey hooks are twice the weight. I REALLY wish the streamlined swirls came in a pink and cream swirl. THAT is my DREAM! But my regular, go-to, hooks are tulip etimo. I love the furls for my larger hooks but I don't love them as much as my tulips. And most of my tulips are the rose hooks - PINK!
