FURNACE won't shut off! Top reasons why your furnace keeps running

Wondering if you have any ideas. Furnace runs forever reguardless of set temperature. The "Heat On" message has gone away and its still blowing heat. It took my house up to 41 deg C the one day when I wasn't home. Right now im turning on the breaker to the furnace until the house is warm and then turning it off again. I have replaced the thermostat and have a new board in it. The old board burnt out somehow. Had an electrician to check the wiring on both the furnace and thermostat. Stumped every Hvac guy ive had in including 2 owners of the Hvac companies. The door that opens while heat is on on the furnace itself doesnt close when its supposed to. Its not getting caught on anything and even took apart the spring mechanism on it to make sure it was working properly. Furnace is from the 60's is a Lennox.

Why would you have a HVAC guy check it out? If you don't have forced hot air and have baseboards, calling a HVAC guy would be pointless, as you don't have ducts. Possibly get your chimney to the oil burner cleaned. Many aren't even aware that it exists and it would be a good start.

What if its warm when you walk by it and it has not come on all day because its hot outside? And the thermostat is turned off. Is that normal?

Apparently smart thermostats are a problem for furnaces... And another reason for furnace not shutting off. Im currently trying to figure out mine... Even if i completely pull the thermostat off the wall (break connection) the furnace still opperates. Im not sure it its an internal thermostat or something

it seems like if you remove the thermostat from the equation then you would no longer consider that the issue. check low voltage wiring is not getting 24v to the W terminal.

I got a Google nest thermostat. My furnace continues to run even with the thermostat removed and all wiring unplugged. My old thermo didn't have this issue. Temp set to 72. It's 95 degrees in my house. 45 deg outside Temp.

Have exact same problem with my ecobee thermostat, completely pulling it off the wall doesn’t do anything. It’s getting so cold in our house

What he said is fine BUT he's only a HVAC guy. Thats for forced hot air, not for us that have baseboards. An oil burner might constantly run due to a number of issues, including a faulty thermostat (incorrect setting or malfunction), a clogged air filter restricting airflow, a dirty burner nozzle, problems with the flue pipe preventing proper exhaust, leaky ductwork, low system pressure, or an improperly sized furnace for the space it's heating

Hi i have the same problem too. My thermostat set temperature is 72 but my heat temps went 79 and wont stop going up...??? Any idea solutions before i call the Hvac??

My furnace was running all the time. Even if I lowered the temperature, it ran 24/7. It was on Auto and the set temperature always matched the actual temperature and still wouldn't turn off. When I took the thermostat off, the furnace shut off. Does this mean I need a new thermostat?
