Very beautiful. I figured out you made $6.52 a hour--minus materials. But I totally get it being a labor of love, I just finished two twin head boards and foot boards for my daughters and totally loved every minute. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for doing the math, Brenda. That is too funny! Glad you can relate to it being a "labor of love." If I had to, I would PAY for the opportunity to paint for other people, just because it gives me that much joy! Feel free to post photos of your headboards on my facebook page. I love sharing inspiration.

MuralsbyMarcy All right I will try to remember to do that. I am making a KZbin video of the pictures I took. There is nothing like the feeling of a job well done and knowing in some small way, you have made the world a better place.

I did this for years. Buying and selling antique furniture that need work. Refinished it, hauled it to shows and major markets. It helped it sell, but in the end, after expenses and time it was literally 8 or ten bucks and hour. Hardly worth it. The money is made in the quick flip. Unless you're overwhelmed with the sheer joy of sanding and working with toxic chemicals) Don't work on it. Just buy it cheap and flip it for a quick double without ever touching it.
@BrendaPatten197710 жыл бұрын
Havaseet2 I get plenty of creative outlets from working on my old apartment buildings. If I ever decide to start a hobby though, I might flip some furniture for fun, but probably not much profit.
@brettholt62776 жыл бұрын
Brenda Patten I flipped a few in college outta necessity. And you are totally correct. The more time it was taking me, I realized my hourly wage is going way down. I did this in my kitchen in my apartment in the winter. It would be more feasible to be working on multiple projects.

I re-do used furniture myself & the one of the first things I look for is whether or not it's partial board & try to avoid it whenever possible though I will re-do some if not in terrible shape. The first thing I look for is any bubbling up spots from the partial wood being wet & the flaking off (such as on the back leg of this one) & lastly check the drawer guides to make sure their not busted loose from the main frame/housing... if any of these are there I normally won't bother with them due to that I'm looking to not replacing any of the wood for a better profit margin...

I find that wood putty tends to shrink and cracks easily. If I'm going to paint a piece, I use car body filler - a one part cellulose based filler for cracks and gouges which is quite loose and normally a two part filler for things like those holes that need a stiffer putty. I've also found that particle board draws a lot of paint (even when spraying), so I normally use a wood primer to seal the particle board first. I think that this is more of a hobby that we recover some money on - people just don't realize or appreciate the time and effort that goes into restoring some pieces - especially natural wood!!!

I love how so many are experts on the subject..lol.. Saying if you take the time you should use a antique..1st it's a labor of love. 2nd using this allows many buyers to have a nice looking dresser or other. 3rd if you wanna try something wild and it goes wrong no big deal. Not everything a person does will be your taste or your gonna like the finish. But it's about using a form of expression of usable art. Many see furniture done and think oh I can do it ..I say try it ..be about not talk about..
@DR-zt9gs8 жыл бұрын
I think instead of using a wood putty, I would have tried using cut pieces of dowels glued into place and sanded after. They fill the spot better and tend not to crack over time.
@kleAndkre079 жыл бұрын
I think she did a great job making it more sturdy, and it's really cute with that pink paint! Its even good how she saved money using left over paints, but if it were me or maybe just as an idea for the future, use a stencil on the top part! It would've been even cuter with a simple little design on the top with the white paint and making the details white as well to match. Just a thought! Great job though!

In your opinion is there worth or value in picking up older hardwood furniture even when it is in rough condition ? I have picked up a couple or 3 hard wood dressers from the 50's and or sixties they are rough . Although my thought were with the rarity and expense of hard wood furniture, added with the popular resurgence in retro and distressed furniture . That the dressers would pick up a few dollars as is . Or would it be better to slightly recondition by oiling or or replace drawer slide tracks and sanding and painting the dresser ? I am not sure the profit difference would be worth the time and money spent on reconditioning . Although if the hard wood retro dressers wouldn't really bring anything as is . Then doing a spruce up would be the only option ? Love to hear what you think Appreciate the video & info, God Bless
@TheSatyrblue6 жыл бұрын
Refinishing the hardwood is well worth the time. Selling it as is compared to refinished can be a couple of hundred dollars difference each depending on the wood and original quality of the piece. It also really depends on what you consider rough. If the piece it gouged or rotting/heavy water damage (requiring replacing panels to get close to original finish) then a quick refinish/paint job is probably your best option.

Paint the raised portion on the top drawer black as well.....helps fit it in instead of making it look like a 'found' drawer. I'd have kept the top all black then sanded lightly to age all the black paint a bit....looks like a very fun dresser other then that! (SAFETY GEAR!!!)

@MuralsbyMarcyV8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out my video. I take a lot of heat for this one because I used pressed wood for this particular project. At the time, I thought I was doing the right thing, because that's what the original material was. Knowing what I know now, I would have used hardwood. Pine or maple.
@satzbau91856 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it was the wrong choice-- it's certainly the more profitable choice, and once you slap a coat of paint on it who really knows the difference? And if it's intended for a little girl, I don't imagine it'd make any difference at all in terms of practical durability or aesthetics. Cheers for fixing it up however, better than it becoming trash/firewood/ etc.

when painting lines, paint your base color, then add the blue painters tape, then paint the base color again, THEN paint your stripe color, this will prevent paint from going under the tape

How come you didn't sand those pieces down before you put it back together ? Just wondering cuz I would think you could hit the nooks and crannies easier with the sandpaper.or sander with them separated. I'm am just starting out and I like to see how other people do things. And you said you could picture that in a little girl's room??? I could picture that in MY room!! lol I love the light pink, those knobs, (I bought the clear ones for an upcoming project) and the black and white stripe top is perfect with the other black accents! You did a great job and I like that you took the time to replace the ruined parts.
