I'm so glad I came across this video. I just saw some video's with BEYOND PAINT and thought this would be great for redoing my tiny kitchen. After watching this, it has me rethinking my options. With 3 dogs and a man-child, I need something more durable than beyond paint. Thank you for taking the time to perform this experiment.

I am very upset at how your test was done. It makes me wonder about the validity of your past tests. I used Beyond Paint on my kitchen cabinets and couldn't be more thrilled. I did do a light sanding before painting because my cabinets were in pretty bad shape. I washed with what BP recommended - TWICE and rinsed. The only way that paint is coming off is with paint thinner. I tried to scratch the inside of the doors and NOTHING. Did make an indent in the wood but nothing came up/off. I painted with a brush and had a smooth shiny finish with a hint of the wood grain showing. They are beautiful.

I refinished a dining room set and coffee table with Beyond paint. It is by far the best paint Ive ever used. I don't know what it is about chalk paint that people like.
@jc14002 жыл бұрын
i've used both and I prefer Beyond Paint. I painted a dark mahogany dresser with white Beyond paint. All I did was clean it with a TSP solution first. no sanding. It covered in 2 coats, no bleed through. I used a foam roller and had a nice smooth surface. I tried chalk paint on a similar piece and had red bleed through in just a few weeks.
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit2 жыл бұрын
Each piece of furniture is different. Unless you used both Beyond Paint and chalk paint on the same piece you cannot say that one worked better than the other. The color of paint you use, the prior finish, the type of wood, age, etc etc can affect bleed through. The piece you painted with chalk paint may have been pine with no finish left and of course you will get bleed though. That is why I did a side by side comparison on dresser drawers from the same dresser with the same prep so you can see a real side by side comparison of chalk paint vs beyond paint. I don't know about you, but I do not want to go to all the trouble of refinishing a piece of furniture only to have the finish "fail" It is my hope that my videos will help you be successful in refinishing furniture so they turn our great!

A nice objective test and review. Everything I've seen so far with Beyond Paint is the need to apply it with a nap roller so the coat is thick enough to cover well. I assume that also provides much better ability to prevent scratching (as shown in your tests). I'm definitely going to give Beyond Paint a try when I re-finish my kitchen cabinets and plan to apply two coats and use their sealer to provide a better satin finish and some extra protection. The biggest selling point for me was the ability to use it and not have to perform major pre-prep or sanding before and after, saving a huge mess in my house. Tx! BTW... I've painted a few types of paneling (pegboard, vintage 1970s stained real wood wall paneling, etc.) and IMHO the best water based primer I've ever used was Valspar Stainblocking Bonding Primer Extreme Adhesion. It sticks to anything and never seems to lift off, even when scratched hard.

@rockshot100 Жыл бұрын
I notice no answer so... I always use a shellac based primer, and a little scuff sanding before that. Certainly clean all this up with a degreaser, like krudcutter, or even dawn. Use Killz ORIGINAL, or the Zerginnzers (never the latex based), however that is spelled. This way, you will NEVER get bleed through, and your paint will STICK and NEVER have bleed through. Personally I always use varathane clear waterbased sealer, any sheen you want. A few very small extra steps that don't take long to do and not expensive, but you will have miles of peace of mind, this paint job will outlast YOU!

After using it on a test cabinet and seeing that it chipped easily and was not as smooth as I like. I went ahead and used it as if it were a standard paint. I cleaned with simple green, rinsed off, dried, sanded with 220 on detail sander, primed with bonding primer sanded, then beyond paint, then sealed. I sanded between all the coats. I found that careful brushing was better than a roller with even a 1/4 inch nap. Oh, I also used Floetrol. I brushed it on lightly and immediately applied Beyond paint. Thin coats are best. As many as needed. So I was able to use my $125 gallon of Beyond paint without throwing it away but I won't buy it again. Just do the work. There are no shortcuts to a quality finish.

The key to successful DIY all in one paint is to use high quality paint as the base. Do not use bargain brand paint. Even if I spend $30 a gallon I still save a LOT of money since 1 qt of the commercial all in one is over $35 a quart. Love your video! I bought two tall dressers from Marketplace that I wish to paint for my daughters. Based on the results from this video, I will use waverly paint with primer and polyurethane. However, I didn’t see you sand in this video. I saw in other some waverly print videos showing that there’s no need to prime or sand. Is it necessary to sand down the drawers when using waverly since I am trying to avoid? If sanding is necessary, what type of sand paper do I need? Thanks
@ritasok96502 жыл бұрын
I just watched it again. You said you sand after you apply the primer and in between each chalk paint layer with 220 or above to smooth out the paint brush stroke. Do you sand or need to the furniture before adding the primer? What’s the difference between the polyurethane or waverly clear wax? What about the synthetic bristle brush or waverly brushes? Thanks
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rita. Since you are using primer, you really do not have to sand it UNLESS the wood that you are painting over is rough. In other words, the paint primer and poly will not make the final finish smooth if it is not smooth to begin with. That being said, You do not have to sand the entire dresser. Just sand the part that is not smooth. Waverly is very very thick! The way to get a smooth finish with it it to either thin it with a little water and/or spray it with water as you paint it on. If you feel the brush begin to drag then spray it with water until the brush glides smoothly over the surface. That is what I love about chalk paint. It goes on so smooth and covers very well BUT you have to thin it with water. You may have to give it a couple of coats of paint to get an opaque surface. I like zibra brushes or the "best" ones from Harbor Freight. I use a car washing sponge cut is segments to apply the water base polyurethane and I always apply 4-6 coats of poly of the top and 2-3 on the sides. I did not sand in this video because beyond paint says you do not have to so to compare the 2 paints evenly, I did not sand with the waverly chalk paint. I hope this is helpful. Feel free to write another comment with any further ? ( I do not see your comments to a comment so you should start a new comment) Best of luck! YOU can do it!!! take you time and be very OCD about it all. There are lots of videos on you tube showing you how to paint with chalk paint.

I do not recommend using waverly wax because then you will have to reapply it every 6 months. Who in the world has time to do that! I have all my bills automatically deducted from my checking account because I don't remember to pay them (and they send reminders!) My dresser is certainly not going to send me a reminder that it is time to wax it again! LOL! Polyurethane is an excellent long lasting maintenance free finish! That is what I recommend you use.

Beyond paint says... to give the piece multiple days to cure, up to a month, depending. So the real test would be best after two weeks.

I can only warn you to buy from Beyond Paint. The product can be great if it works, but the paint is very temperature sensitive and curdles like sour milk. Instead of sending me an immediate replacement like they promised, they were unresponsive and lied about the shipping. NEVER AGAIN!

Hi. I emailed the company before the video was released and reviewed with them the products I used and the way that I applied it. They confirmed that I did it correctly. Please see my follow up video to see the results after I tested BP for durability and wearability. I applied it 4 different ways (even tho the company does not recommend applying it with anything but a 3/8 in. nap roller). You may find the results surprising. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKfJiKiflLSifMk

I dont care what the can says, IMO, you need either mechanical adhesion or chemical adhesion for things to stick together correctly. That means in this case, mechanical, or sanding. It needs something to "bite" to the surface. Chemical adhesion means a product has a certain time frame to recoat to chemically bond to whatever it is being applied to.. If that time window expired, you then need to sand. Sanding would mean scuffing the glossed surface. A scotchbite pad would even work. I would never do any kind of painting without good prep work, no matter what the claims on the can. Theres too much work involved to get something done right, with zero shortcuts. Unless you like to gamble.

I agree 100% Terry. That is one of the reasons I do not personally like Beyond Paint. If I am going to go to the trouble of painting a piece, I want it to last and from this test, if you use Beyond Paint, it will not last. When I paint furniture, I always clean it well and then scuff sand it and then apply an oil base primer to prevent bleed through.

Know when to hold em and know when to fold em. The person or company who came up with "no prep" as a sales pitch is somebody I want to play Poker with..

Hi We know we’re not the cheapest on the market, but with the amount of time and work saved by using our All-in-One paint along with the amazing quality and results, we truly believe it’s a great investment 😃

I wouldn’t give a dime for chalk paint. I buy a good paint and do my preparation before hand. When I’m done I done, I don’t have to wax or put a sealer on it. Last forever.

It depends on the piece. I prefer my recipe for diy all in one paint BUT if I am painting a piece white then I like chalk paint. White chalk paint covers better than my diy all in one paint.

High build prime, sand repeat 4 times up to 200 microns. Sand 1200 paper....tac and paint this will get rid of the texture of the wood....use Acid cat paint tough durable paint easily sprayed on for a flat even finish with no texture.

But a test $8 jar and test Beyond Paint. You will be amazed. I scuff sanded my kitchen cabinets because they were in such bad shape - but the only the final paint will come off is with paint thinner - not scratches

Boy you really don’t like the popularity of Beyond Paint. This is the second video I’ve seen you do with Beyond Paint.
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sampson. I was giving it another try with this video because I had so many people tell me that they had success with applying it using a foam roller. If you watched the video, you would have seen that I applied it a variety of ways and yes indeed it was much smoother. However, when I tested it for durability, I was shocked at the results. I would love to be able to use this on my furniture flips because one step beats 3 steps! However, I want the furniture I sell to stand up to normal wear and tear and it is apparent based on my testing that it is not as durable a chalk paint with a sealer applied.
