As a long-time convention-goer, I follow two procedures that do a pretty good job of preventing the Midnight Muncher. First: I book the hotel rooms, and I negotiate room payments before the convention even starts. Second: I schedule a group video chat with all roommates prior to the con, so we can talk details and get to know each other. That way, we're not meeting each other for the first time at the con.

I’ve had a crazy experience with a random roommate at my first fur con. I’m not going to describe what happened but it is still cringey still. We still see each other occasionally every time at my local fur con.

Wow, what a horror story. I've roomed with people I've never met a few times, but it has always when a friend I trusted vouched for them. Worked out great each time. You've thoroughly convinced me to not go with someone I actually don't know haha. Also god, the fact that they think they can pay with groceries... and then they make your trip much worse using said groceries... The propositioning is on another level of unacceptability.

My single rooming with someone I didn’t know at all experience: - she was in the room already and we said hi and introduced ourselves - we each hung out with our own friends which where very different groups - we got back around the same time, said maybe a sentence or 2 about our day and went to sleep - after this we had our own room mates since we both where 1 day earlier then our room mates I’d rate my very limited experience 5/5 so far! (We did speak a little at the con later but I think neither of us had anything in common really so ended up more with our own friends, maybe another time. But I don’t plan to do random when I can avoid that)

Look. I'm sometimes a "midnight muncher" in the sense that sometimes (most times) my roommates and I aren't back in the room until the early am hours and we haven't eaten since early evening so its time to MUNCH. BUT I always try to munch quietly if roommates are sleeping AND I'd NEVER go to bed covered in crumbs!

Never have been something like that has happen to me. When at cons, I am always alone in my room or rental. But imagining if it were to happen to me, I'd freak out and run out of the room screaming and screeching. This situation you were in is a nightmare. I like how you mentioned The Twilight Zone in the middle of this as right when you called it The Story of the Midnight Muncher, I automatically thought of the old Are You Afraid of the Dark or Goosebumps type stories. Personally I was connected more to Are You Afraid of the Dark, but eh. That being said I think you and Chip were a lot more civil than I am as if I was with someone who woke me up in the middle of the night and he told me, “We could have a three way” in the middle of the night I would tell him in no uncertain terms to get a different room and roommate.

ig im lucky, i had quite the opposite experience. i was traveling to a brony convention in a foreign country and a communication error had me get there at midnight right when the convention was over. the last train had already left and i was stuck there. some random guy i met at the brony convention saw i was in need and offered me a place to sleep in his apartment for the night. i took him up on the offer and drew a pic for him as thanks. nothing weird happened at all. it all worked out in the end and i made it home the next day. im pretty thankful for that guy helping me out like that.

This is my second time I put the room in my name and only had people I got know and be very good friends to stay in the room. Now I am that good person will get snacks, pack of water for the room cuz the convention center snacks and drinks is ridiculous.. But groceries for a 3 or four day event..that’s wild.

@@AshCoyote so this happen at mp (wont say which one but it was not the one you were at also hi ash its me axel the undead ceo) and it was one of the biggest oh s*** moments that thankfully didnt actually happen. One of the gohs had alerted me that they had left the property to get some ramen via text message of which i verbally told the staff around me what had happened. theyre response was shock and horror because they thought i casually said "WAIT THE GOH IS GETTING ROBBED!?!? GO FIND THEM ISNT THAT YOUR JOB?!?!" after a few seconds of panic i resaid what i intended to say which quickly de escalated the situation. but due to the miscommunication the staff around were about to go into defcon 5 because they thought the goh had been robbed off and property and the person in charge of their safety was not with them. this story its pretty short and more tame compared to some others but this one was my favorite because of how much it freaked people out

I have totally done this. Mostly the stories are fine, but the boundaries need to be defined ahead of time! Food, space, etc. The most memorable is being locked out of the room at one am when roommate pulled the security lock. Luckily, con exec had a space suite as they were going home so I had a great sleep. The worst is being sexually assaulted. (Happy ending: Friends believed me, guy was chastised and isolated. As far as I know, he didn't re-offend.) Mediocre was having intestinal distress at midnight in a hotel while on a severe budget and crawling the building for a vendirng machine of something which would give me relief. And four to a king! This has happened to me too x-x That was the year I got covid (but no one knew covid was a thing yet, since it was January 2020)

In 22 i was in a nearby hotel, and the venue was much smaller, nearby, as in right next door so not that bad. This yr i got the main tower, it made it so much easier and better. Also gave me the ability to do real service for the con.

Well, that tops my story. It was my third con and roomed with people I didn’t know. Yiffing was going on in the next bed and I just covered my head and went to sleep. In the morning I stepped in puke and had condom wrappers stuck to my feet. If I don’t personally know them I won’t room with them now. I was just an innocent guy fresh off the farm 😂

This guy's friend like to great the morning sunshine buck naked bent. He was doing morning stretches and was bent over...I woke up to see too much that early. He stopped after we talked abour it though. A little side note: Sun Chips Harvet Cheddar on a Turkey, Bacon Subway sandwich is actually yummy. I wouldn't eat it while people are trying to sleep though. That's rude.

Id have kicked them out, the moment they didnt pay. Also why are you not taking the payment first? That said tons of food is pretty common at cons people invite friends over for some smash or mario kart so that months supply can go in like 2 days. That said after the munching on night one and whispering 100% id have given them the money back and told them to find a motel 6. I also make sure to carry my rifle bag to every con, and that tends to keep the roomates on their best behaviors.
