Sped up process of making a Plantigrade bodysuit. Plantigrade sutis are the most easy body types to make, as they require no body shaping padding.
I make costumes on commission, please visit my webpage for more information: www.komickrazi.com
Fur used on this suit:

Really interesting to see how another maker does things. I usually make up a loose fitting calico bodysuit from a template then tailor it to the dummy to create a pattern and then cut the fur but I'd never thought of making a duct tape dummy of a duct tape dummy! I think you just saved me a couple of hours :) Also I cover stitch all of the seams by hand so that no fur gets caught when I machine stitch the seams. How do you prevent it from happening? Couldn't quite make out your technique. Thanks for sharing this :) I love your fursuits, they're always so different!
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 10 жыл бұрын
The method you use is more of drape method: drape fabric or a premade pattern and pin/mod to make a pattern. It has it's purpose as well (especially for finer detailed work), but the tape method is faster for basic fursuits as faux fur is very forgiving - if your pattern is slightly off it is still useable without any noticeable errors. I tuck the fur in as I go; you may notice the stopping and starting as I run the suit through the machine. I will tuck in any exposed fur, sew 5 or 6 inches, then tuck in the next bit. This process seems to keep the fabric from getting caught in the machine. This is also an industrial machine, so it can take more abuse and is less likely to jam than a basic home model.

Heee... All that black fuzz.. shame you didn't stand it up when you were done at the end so we could see properly. Still, looks good. I don't know if its the cold we've been having here lately, and after seeing this, now I'm somewhat anxious to start on another suit project again.

Wow this is helpful but I want to asks what fur would seem more realistic and how tall is an average person because I'm 13 and my fursuit includes high heels to make into hooves and I don't want to look really tall or super short lol
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 10 жыл бұрын
I guess 5'5" to 6' is pretty average. I'm short, I'm only 5'2" Stilts may make you really tall, but high heeled shoes will not. I would recommend ordering swatches so you can see the fur in person. Fur may look great in photos, but look/feel crappy in person. Realistic furs look.... well real, they will have mixed natural colors in them, often with a mix of long and short fibers.

Great film! You seem to cut out the pieces very quickly. What tool are you using? And what protection underneath?
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 7 жыл бұрын
I use an Olfa brand retractable boxcutter. In order to cut quickly and smoothly, be sure the blade is sharp! Never feel you need to use a dull knife: break down to a sharper edge or replace the blade entirely the moment you find you aren't cutting as well. Underneath are those Anti-fatigue foam floor mats. If your blade is sharp you shouldn't need to press hard when cutting fabric, however it's a good idea to have something under your work when you cut so you don't damage your floors.

I'm almost ready to start on my body suit! I just need to know where the seams would go! Do you just divide the dtd into quarters and pattern it that way?
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 9 жыл бұрын
Basically yes, however if there are accents or markings or if your DTD has a lot of curves those may change the basic cut-out of the pattern

Thank you for putting out this video! I was driving myself nuts trying to draft a pattern for a simple bodysuit yesterday. I was trying to avoid making a DTD, but everything I'm reading tells me that the benefits of owning one outweigh the trouble of making one. Do you ever feel like you need to add extra material to areas like the armpit or crotch? My worry is that going straight off the DTD will make it a little tight there.
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 10 жыл бұрын
I do add a little extra in the crotch and armpits, though it is hard to see in this video. An easy way to add forgiveness in the crotch is to pull the pants down slightly when you put them on the DTD, it will give the dropped crotch affect you need when you start taping.
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 10 жыл бұрын
Also, the nice thing about DTDs is once you are done you can take them apart and fold them away nice and small. You don't HAVE to leave them put together all the time taking up a ton of space. Then the next time you have a project, just put it back together and away you go!

When you base the pattern of the suit from the DTD, will the bodysuit end up being fairly tight to your body and restrict movement? How to do make a DTD that will make the final suit not as tight?
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 9 жыл бұрын
Allyson Nelson Bodysuits are form fitting, but not tight. Fur has some flexibility and stretch so you can move more freely. If you want a more baggy suit, you can use the same approach, but when tracing the lines into the fur, add and extra inch or more to the seams.

I don't. I run through the machine once with a straight stitch, then go over the edge a second time with a zig zag stitch. You certainly don't HAVE to do this, it just makes the edges neater.

How much extra space do you leave on a bodysuit if you want it to be form fitting? 1 inch, 1/2 inch?
@riceroudis
@riceroudis 8 жыл бұрын
Or rather, what is the seam allowance you used to make your bodysuit? And /do/ you leave any extra space, or would it fit fine without?
@Komickrazi
@Komickrazi 8 жыл бұрын
I do a seam allowance of about 3/4" to 1" If you are unsure it's better to go with a larger seam allowance. You can always take it in if it's too loose. If it's too tight you may need to cut new pieces.

this is very help full! but how would you make a digigrade fursuit? no one really explains this process :0
@julianemery718
@julianemery718 8 жыл бұрын
+Baily wolf (I know this answer is super late, but here it is anyway.) I would imagine you'd stick foam directly onto the DTD and shape it to how you want it, then do the masking tape exactly the same way as in the video, the only difference would be that you have slightly different shapes to work with.
@deaththekid9289
@deaththekid9289 8 жыл бұрын
what do you mean?
@julianemery718
@julianemery718 8 жыл бұрын
Deathwolf200 First you make a DTD of your body. Then you cut the DTD off of yourself, stick it together and stuff it. then you go about sticking foam padding onto the DTD so you're basically making a life-size model of your character. Then after you're happy with how it looks (digigrade padding, muscles, any other parts you want to exaggerate) you get quite a bit of masking tape (I find it to be better than duct tape, as duct tape loves sticking to itself and never letting go) cover HALF of your DTD in the stuff, draw lines to mark out where the different furs will be, then cut off the masking tape to use as patterns for your fabrics. If any of the bits you cut off don't sit completely flat, you have to cut little slits in the tape so they do sit flat, then you draw around the shapes, slits and all, for cutting out. Hope this helps.

Julian Emery Thank you! It helped! but if you don't want to do a DTD, you can just get old leggings and long sleeve shirts and sew the openings for your arms and legs together, then stuff it in and boom! a DTD.
