The Modern Martial Artist

2 жыл бұрын

In this film study, we analyze Tyson Fury's dirty boxing tactics that worked so well against Deontay Wilder. Tyson Fury’s 3rd and final fight against Deontay Wilder was nothing short of spectacular, capping off one of the greatest trilogies in heavyweight history.
The first time I broke down Fury’s style, I focused on how he stifled an opponent’s offense by constantly interrupting their rhythm, feinting every time they tried to enter into an exchange. I only briefly touched on how Fury used wrestling tactics to dirty box when he was ready to end a fight, but since he put on a total masterclass on these tactics in his last fight against Wilder, I think it’s time we delve a little deeper.

Take it to the streets that's what he's good at when it's needed. Fury got outboxed by Steve Cunningham at the start just on speed and agility so Fury took him to the streets and got the job done. He said it himself "if I can't outbox you I'll out man you" that's the side of boxing many people don't like but it's all apart of boxing, it has its own skill set and technicalities.

Yeah the fact he's been knocked down by guys the same size as Usyk gives me hope a fight between them would be pretty interesting. It might go down to if Usyk could nuetralize Fury's wrestling and then we would see who the better boxer is. If Usyk can set up the correct body shots and keep his guard tight to not get tangled up it might be possible. Let's hope we get to find out!

@@TheModernMartialArtist Can you break down weaknesses? Wilder scored two heavy knockdowns on Fury. He ultimately lost because Fury has a better chin. But what techniques led to those two knockdowns on someone as technically sound as Fury?
@deeeeeeeench1209
@deeeeeeeench1209 2 жыл бұрын
@@TarellHudson It all started with Wilder throwing massive overhand rights as he often does but Wilder then faints a right, Fury covers up the faint worked Wilder only touches Fury with his left, then Wilder moves around to his left and throws a jab to the body Fury is now slightly square on to Wilder. Wilder takes half a step back Fury steps in, Wilder throws a jab followed by a right hand almost throwing both hands at the same time Fury is wide open and in a bad position he cant slip the punch and he cant use lateral movement as he's coming into the punches square. Fury instinctively manages to frame and to push Wilder off avoiding any further damage. The second knockdown was more of the damage gained from the first knockdown It wasn't clear to me what punch/punches dropped him as he appeared to just go down while they both threw wild punches that missed the mark and they became tangled with Wilder on top of Fury. I can only guess Fury used the second knockdown as recovery from the first knockdown.

@@TheModernMartialArtist you never know, heights disadvantage has always been well overblown, it's why they curiously mention it a lot less when Mike Tyson or Canelo fight. For the masterclass on switching the position of your head against the opponent's chest, watch a Roberto Duran fight. Both Fury & Duran have figured out that when you are that close, you don't need to see your opponent to know exactly what he's doing, which was he is leaning or adjusting his feet, et. al. But it take a lot of confidence and a lot of courage to bring a fight that close to your opponent.

@@phothewin6019 Fury has never fought an aggressive elite super heavyweight that knew how to fight on the inside. Fury's would be coming off second best in the pocket and his best bet would be to fight at range but Lewis knew how to pressure and drag taller opponents into dog fights. It would be very competitive but i favor Lewis due to his superior credentials and the style match up favors Lewis anyway. Lewis's resume also eclipses Fury's. Fury had issues when Otto Wallin pressed the issue and worked the body even before the cut emerged. Wallin even hurt Fury in the 12th. And keep in mind this was slick backfoot Fury, not agressive front foot Kronk Fury. Lewis has the power to drop Fury because Fury hae been dropped and hurt by guys who hit nowhere near as hard as Lewis and Lewis knew how to finish opponents unlike Deontay Wilder. Let's see Fury beat several top fighters in this era before we say he's a nightmare matchup for the greats because a past it Klitschko and the same one trick pony 3 times doesn't cut it for GOAT status. I don't think Fury will struggle with Usyk. Fury is a Switch fighter, knows to keep his toe to the outside of a SouthPaw... I can't see Usyk using the Overhand to counter the Jab on Fury's height/ frame and even feint game... As much as I like A.J, Fury will tear him up.

Fury and Usyk are my favorites. Fury beats Usyk. He is too skilled, too big. In general, I dont' think size will be a big factor against Usyk as his skills are just so superior...but Fury knows how to make himself as big as possible. He doesn't crouch down like aj does giving up his height advantage. Fury will extend his finger to extend his 85" reach to max so he can hit you and score a point. He fights great in either stance, has the best feints I've ever seen, can chance tactics if need be (unlike aj). I just don't see Usyk winning it.

@@douglaswalters2670 I agree with you. Usyk has a very good chin. Better to target the body. Who do you think wins between Wilder and aj? I long predicted Wilder would KO aj in round 1. Wilder won't want to box aj. He will go for the kill right away as he did with Fury in the first fight. aj can't move out of the way as Fury can. Wilder is fast, very fast, Fury is fast, very fast...aj is fast but only with his hands. I hate both of these two racists so I dont' care if I'm wrong, but still curious if my prediction is right. I've been damn good at predicting fights :)

@douglaswalters2670 2 жыл бұрын
@@retroman7331 I favour Wilder assuming he is the same fighter after this hellacious beating he suffered against Fury. But AJ can definitely rock and drop Wilder. Outside Fury, we saw Ortiz in the first fight wobble Wilder hard. In general, AJ likes the mid-range which is the sweet spot for Wilder’s right hand. Fury had success on the outside and on the inside. AJ lacks the head movement and mobility for the former and the clinch game for the latter. Once AJ feels the first real stinger (because you WILL get hit), he will become real passive. Against Wilder that is probably the worst thing you can do. You have to keep him thinking and his right hand occupied with feints, probes, jabs, etc.

It's amazing that at his size Fury can fight small in the clinch. I think he'll beat AJ and Usyk. I don't know what AJ currently does better than Fury, he likely has more power than Fury and can box better than anyone Fury has faced so far but he just doesn't have the chin, stamina or footwork to deal with someone like Fury. Usyk on the other hand has the technical ability, footwork, speed and movement to deal with Fury but I'm wondering how he'll deal with Fury clinching, leaning and punching him against the ropes. Unlike AJ Fury has the chin to walk Usyk down if that's even possible.

Wilder dominated because he has insane power and a great chin and good stamina. He didn't need the boxing ability because he's KO'd or knockdown every fighter he's ever fought within 12 rounds.... Furys ability to set up the 'strike left jab followed with a hard straight right' AND THEN tie up opponents is one of his greatest skills. He's also an excellent counter-puncher and can throw hooks, upper-cuts and other shots from numerous angles an Weird positions. He's got a terrific jaw and can rock and roll with the toughest Fighters. His striking accuracy is way above average. After looking at the Usyk video, a fight with Fury would be a tough one for him.
