In order to plant any commercial crops the whole area has to be cleared of every kind of life stripped down to bare soil and then poisoned and protected even from birds deer and rabbits let alone insects. Cows or goats on the other hand attract more life to pastures and turn just plain grass into most valuable calories that can exist. Pigs can not only do that but survive on leftover food and produce meat full of vitamins B12, B6, Niacin and Riboflavin -. Chickens favourite food are insects and all kinds of garden pests and they turn that into the perfect food that doesn't even require meat processing at all. Veganism is a scam.

Farmers are essential....crop farming most definitely as opposed to animals being exploited, artificially impregnated and living horribly cruel, short and to miserable existences before being butchered to death for reasons of taste pleasure tradition and habits. Slowly dying giving birth to a calf coming the wrong way round and might also be one of twins, in which case all three die! And why is it we can have vitamins and supplements and cattle can't? Anything givin to cattle is for their good. A cow given nothing other than grass is a less healthy cow. Stop trying to think that cows have the same pain and feelings as humans. Our cattle are now out grazing where possible they have been in the sheds over the winter for protection, feeding and calving. @@audreysuter4315First of all, the meat and dairy industry is far more rich and powerful than the plant based food industry. So I don’t know where that ‘funding’ thing comes from. Secondly, it is basic maths. Most animals we eat are warm blooded animals. That means a lot of energy that is put into an animal gets turned into heat to keep the animal warm as well as the same systems that need energy to be kept running that are in cold blooded animals like fish. That means a lot of energy is lost going up the food chain. For example, a kg of cattle takes around 75 MJ to produce but contains just 0.2 MJ of energy. These numbers should explain how environmentally and resource unsustainable meat agriculture is. If you are lower down the food chain, there is less inefficiency. It’s just common sense. The law of the conservation of energy forbids meat consumption to be more efficient than plant based consumption.

Let me add a little balance here - most vegans I know grew up in the city, and while their moral cause is admirable, the reality is quite different. It takes at least one acre at the very least to feed one person for a year - that means we’d need 80 million acres to feed the people in the UK a plant based diet - most fields that are used for cattle and sheep are not arable and are unsuitable for growing crops. I grew up on a farm in Australia - when you plough a field, you kill everything in that field and grain/vegetable crops have to be protected from animals that would eat those crops - and it's not just insects ... hundreds of thousands of other animals like mice, rats, birds and other animals are killed so that vegans can have their 'ethical-meat-free-no-animals-suffered' diet (I'm sure farms around the world have their own pests to contend with). Those animals die just because they are hungry and they die without any of their by-products being used. So, I'm fine if you choose to be vegan, that's your choice ... but don't bleat about your higher moral standards that no animals died to feed you, because they do and their bodies are wasted. It's a cruel world.

There's a great book by Lierre Keith that goes into detail of how plant agriculture deplets soil and animal agriculture recovers it. It's called " The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability" She uses many historical examples of damage done through plant agriculture too.

Conservative estimates put the total amount of land used for animal agriculture (both directly and indirectly) at 50% in spite of only making up 18% of global calories. More recent estimates put that number as high as 80%. This is because cattle need to eat too you know. That means you either need to grass feed them (which requires HUGE amounts of land) or more commonly, feeding them with normally soy or corn. These are two of the most destructive forms of farming in the world.

Yeah I consider myself pretty moderate and evidence based and anyone who thinks that what happens to the animals in our agriculture system is moral is on par with the folks who think trans is a real thing. What we do to animals purely based on taste is horrifying. I come from a family of doctors, one being a gastroenterologist, and even he says our modern idea of needing to eat animals is outdated and wrong. Most RSPCA assured is treated appallingly. The RSPCA should stop mistreating animals in their care too, practice what you preach. This child can tell people what to do but I bet she wouldn't have clue about how to produce a lettuce in her own back garden. She should have to spend at least five year farming before she his allowed to comment on it. Learn about the subject although five years is no way long enough I know because I've spent seventy years farming in my own right in various country's around the world and I have had to adapt to a lot of changes imposed by people like this. Plus ones I have had to make to stay in business As farmers we have been to good at feeding people like this who are probably three or four generations away from having produced any food at all.
