@F.u.c.k You OK, so I did the math, since nobody else on the internet has. Their "reactor" was outputting 18,750,000,000,000,000 Watts of energy for 80 picoseconds. Totally not sustainable, and absolutely not the breakthrough everyone thinks it is. They basically created the smallest thermonuclear hydrogen bomb and are claiming we're on the path to sustainable energy. It's pure propaganda and everyone is falling for it LOL

@@fu1ck1you Well, in all previous attempts at confined fusion, the reaction took more energy to create than it produced. So it was a net negative energy equation. Now, they have finally been able to generate more energy with the fusion reaction than they used to create it. A net positive energy equation. Clearly for fusion to be usable for power generation on a large scale, there has to be a net positive energy equation. This doesn't mean they can start building fusion power plants right away, but is a monumental milestone on the road towards that goal.

@@HouTexHemi It's too early to celebrate.. it needed more funding by investors who would like a hefty returns(Nikola Tesla's inventions of alternating current was the greatest invention in contrast with Edison's direct current,we now enjoy electricity in wide distances)but with this fusion energy.. hmm. It reminds me of Ronald Reagan's Star Wars.

LOL,OK. You mean deliberately withholding information that would benefit everyone under the guise of "national security" so that only a few may be unjustly enriched? Didnt Tesla say that energy frequency and vibrations are the keys to the universe and isnt that what they have done here? Microwaves and lasers are just vibrations. So it has taken more than 100 years for the United States to actually admit he was correct.

Lol, don't count yourself rich. First of all, the only thing they achieved is a net positive outcome in Q plasma, what you need is a net positive Q total. It took half a century to get to a positive Q plasma. In order to get a positive Q total, they need to make the proces a hundred times more efficient, while not costing so much that other forms of energy are more affordable. This is probably why fusion will always be a decade away.

I think he’s nervous that this lie will be torn apart so easily. The experiment actually consumed over 300 megajoules, to generate the 3. The 2.05 megajoules they’re talking about is just an estimate, or calculation based on how inefficient they believe the lasers were. He may not be lying, by carefully using the words “energy deposited” instead of “energy consumed”, but most people are taking this to mean they actually produced net energy, which is false. This specific experiment consumed about 100 TIMES the energy they got out of it. That’s not practical, or realistic, at all. They’re also implying they need a lot more money and equipment to “really understand” what happened though.

So this is definitely a good first step, but this is the equivalent of the first electric powered bicycle vs. a modern Tesla. @@PCgamer923 He's referring to the actual steam cycle efficiency, which you can't avoid. Look up thermodynamics cycles. You need to convert the energy from the reaction (burning natural gas, coal, or heat released from fission) into shaft power somehow. This fusion experiment only addresses how much energy was released vs went in, NOT that the energy that was released could be captured. This is the equivalent of finally being able to light a lump of coal on fire and getting some heat from it. You need to figure out a way to harness that energy later into something useful.

Well - there is the question of whether this technology is _scalable_ to meaningful levels of energy production (extraction). So it may well be limited in its application. Secondly - there is a question of what the funding that led to this was earmarked for. I believe that if you get a grant for one thing (e.g. deterrence maintenance) you can't just start using that money for other things - that can be regarded as fraud w.r.t grant applications, so that might well effect the tone of the message to ensure that no federal grant rules are broken (which can be federal law and subject to large repercussions)

@@mrrey8937 possibly sooner. the rest of what needs to be built is straightforward. the odds of solving this problem before 2032 was roughly 20%. Reaching this point in 2022 is undoubtedly the biggest thing that has happened to humankind in any of our lives. It will make a bigger impact in shaping our world than the internet. We've seen how colossal it has been for information to become limitless and accessible to anyone in the world. Now energy is accessible and limitless. @JosephPotesta
@JosephPotesta 2 жыл бұрын
And that comment was not meant to boast about the United States. Just to be clear, this is an international effort that includes contributions from so many countries. I was really just trying to highlight how good it is that this was not discovered by a terrorist organization, for example. And by the way, the odds of this discovery being replicated by organizations who would use it in malicious ways is extremely low. A massive part of this discovery came down to chance. Kind of like guessing a password... except scientists can only guess one time every month... hence my prior comment about the 20% odds of unlocking the right parameters to run the reactor yesterday. The rest of the world can try to replicate this experiment but even with massive amounts of black market scientists being payed to achieve this, it's unlikely this information will be discovered by any other group of scientists. So it's kind of like the moment Facebook was invented... except instead of an awkward weirdo no one really trusts being in control of the miracle invention, a very good group of wholesome people have it in their hands. And these people are not greedy people. Can't emphasize that enough. It's a win for our entire planet. US will make sure of that.

Very interesting news. I'd like to know what was qualitatively different about this experiment, apart from the result obviously. I'd also like to know what the efficiency of the laser generation is. It may be that far more energy was used in order to produce the laser pulse than was released by the fusion reaction. If the laser is

Fyi, at the beginning of tbe discussion panel after this announcement they stated that the laser used was not designed to be efficient but powerful. The amount of energy input into the laser was about 300 megajoules, while the output of the laser used to excite the fuel was only 2.05 Mega joules. So that looks like about less than 1% efficiency? LOL somehow that doesn't feel right but that's what he said

@@yarra6131 They drew 300 megajoules from the grid, produced a 2.05 megajoule laser pulse and released 3.15 megajoules of energy. So while the fusion reaction released around 50% more energy than the laser pulse that ignited it, the experiment was only around 1% efficient. In layman's terms, they're a very long way off generating clean, renewable energy.

I'm pretty surprised that we were able to achieve this, well done everybody! On the other hand, I feel really bad that we as humans, invest soo much in the military, "defense" and other things orientated around the army, rather than focusing on what's more important... understanding the laws of the universe that surround us, understanding ourselves and the future. Hopefully, things will go in a good way.

It's obvious to me from your comment that you are not a scientist. This technology is very old and they didn't want us to have it. One main reason is because if they revealed it then they would have to admit that overunity is real. Japan started building this a while ago and the U.S. just wanted to 1st to announce that it exists. look it up.

@@mustbetrippin7406 it's obvious that you have no clue what milestone they are celebrating in this press conference. You are right fusion reactors are not new the first one was built in the 70-80s but these old reactors required more energy to initiate and contain plasma than they could get out of the reactor. What Lawrence Livermore has achieved is the first fusion reaction to go critical and produce more energy than it took to initiate the reaction. No one has been hiding fusion energy and almost every developed nation has been working to develop fusion energy capabilities.
