@@fu1ck1you Well, in all previous attempts at confined fusion, the reaction took more energy to create than it produced. So it was a net negative energy equation. Now, they have finally been able to generate more energy with the fusion reaction than they used to create it. A net positive energy equation. Clearly for fusion to be usable for power generation on a large scale, there has to be a net positive energy equation. This doesn't mean they can start building fusion power plants right away, but is a monumental milestone on the road towards that goal.

I think he’s nervous that this lie will be torn apart so easily. The experiment actually consumed over 300 megajoules, to generate the 3. The 2.05 megajoules they’re talking about is just an estimate, or calculation based on how inefficient they believe the lasers were. He may not be lying, by carefully using the words “energy deposited” instead of “energy consumed”, but most people are taking this to mean they actually produced net energy, which is false. This specific experiment consumed about 100 TIMES the energy they got out of it. That’s not practical, or realistic, at all. They’re also implying they need a lot more money and equipment to “really understand” what happened though.

Fusion reactors that worked worth crap produce giant amounts of radiation while running. They have made these claims many times before and always get caught omitting input energy. Between the instability, and negative real efficiency, this will never see outside the laboratory. Now suppose they aren't lying...a giant assumption... remember it takes 20 years to build a reactor when they approved them. This is simply a slightly different kind of nuclear reactor. The framing is .. 'interesting' to me. Where if this was announced in a EU Country it would all be about clean energy and it being an important step into the future away from fossil fuels. How for the first time we actually got energy out of a fusion reaction. But here it is all about national security, weapons, staying on top of war deterrents .. yeah.. as I said: Interesting. Well - there is the question of whether this technology is _scalable_ to meaningful levels of energy production (extraction). So it may well be limited in its application. Secondly - there is a question of what the funding that led to this was earmarked for. I believe that if you get a grant for one thing (e.g. deterrence maintenance) you can't just start using that money for other things - that can be regarded as fraud w.r.t grant applications, so that might well effect the tone of the message to ensure that no federal grant rules are broken (which can be federal law and subject to large repercussions)

@@mrrey8937 possibly sooner. the rest of what needs to be built is straightforward. the odds of solving this problem before 2032 was roughly 20%. Reaching this point in 2022 is undoubtedly the biggest thing that has happened to humankind in any of our lives. It will make a bigger impact in shaping our world than the internet. We've seen how colossal it has been for information to become limitless and accessible to anyone in the world. Now energy is accessible and limitless. I'm glad this discovery happened in the United States in a laboratory of scientists I happen to know are good people and have the right intentions. We should all feel really good about this.
@JosephPotesta2 жыл бұрын
And that comment was not meant to boast about the United States. Just to be clear, this is an international effort that includes contributions from so many countries. I was really just trying to highlight how good it is that this was not discovered by a terrorist organization, for example. And by the way, the odds of this discovery being replicated by organizations who would use it in malicious ways is extremely low. A massive part of this discovery came down to chance. Kind of like guessing a password... except scientists can only guess one time every month... hence my prior comment about the 20% odds of unlocking the right parameters to run the reactor yesterday. The rest of the world can try to replicate this experiment but even with massive amounts of black market scientists being payed to achieve this, it's unlikely this information will be discovered by any other group of scientists. So it's kind of like the moment Facebook was invented... except instead of an awkward weirdo no one really trusts being in control of the miracle invention, a very good group of wholesome people have it in their hands. And these people are not greedy people. Can't emphasize that enough. It's a win for our entire planet. US will make sure of that.
