Fun fact: Pamela Anderson was the voice of the blond party babe. They had her on an earlier episode (when Fry had the anchovies) and so they had her record the quick line for this episode when they were recording for that episode.

This was the episode that sold me on the show. The Willy Wonka parody was great but my favorite moment was when they used the x-ray beam on Bender and we found out he had a 6502 in his head. The 6502 cpu was used in most computers and game systems back in the 80's. Nintendo, Atari, C64, Apple 2. When I first saw that I was stunned for a second, then I laughed, and then it occurred to me I'm one of the few people who would get that joke. From then on I was hooked.

Not deliberately, though. There was a conspiracy theory after-the-fact that it had all been pre-planned, but it was really just another example of an oligarchic firm demonstrating the massive arrogance that comes with that market dysfunction. Another example from the period would be Sony going from 100% of the home-video market to 0% in just a few years (an amazing achievement when you consider how much advantage having the whole market gives in a format war), because they refused follow VHS and give their Beta customers a 2-hour tape. Sony stuck with 1-hour, which made Beta machines largely fucking useless, as recording any movie or sports event off the TV would require you to be there to swap tapes, making the "set a timed recording and forget it" feature absolutely meaningless. Companies without competition get real dumb, real fast.

Slim's Mackenzie is a parody of a beer add that came out 10 years before Futurama aired. It's a parody of Spuds MacKenzie or sometimes pronounce Suds Mackenzie. A party dog that drinks beer. Obviously they were trying to get kids to drink beer illegally.

Impossible to sink in, perhaps, but not technically impossible to drown in. Humans drown pretty easily; all you have to do is lie face-down, which is why having a properly fitted and designed lifejacket is so important for marine activities. A very minor point, but just in case anyone ever needed to rely on this info for safety reasons, I'd very much like them to survive so they can tell us how the hell they came to be in such a situation.

Are your episodes really wrong? When these originally came out, they put them out on dvd in volumes not seasons. Some episodes were shuffled around for that, so the DVD of vol 1 doesnt actually have all of season 1. Same with the original dvd releases of Family Guy and Simpsons, they were done in Volumes not seasons. These shows were the first ever to put out dvds out of their episodes. Then everyone else started doing it.

the simpsons universe is canonically in the same as futurama, as well as family guy and american dad. there is a simpsons episode where the futurama cast come back cause of something someone did. and they had the simpsons and family guy crossover. and the american dad had the hurricane episode where at the end there was peter and cleveland. so they are all in the same universe, at the end of the simpsons episode bender stays in their basement to get back to the future and you can see him there in some simpsons episodes after that point.
