If the Slurm classic scheme sounds like it be a real thing, it's because it was! Coca-Cola did this exact thing a few decades ago, replacing cane sugar with corn syrup in the process.
@lunaticbz3594 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it was really genius, They got everyone clamoring for the original, and then no one noticed that they didn't actually get the original coke back. Also explains the somewhat hilarious market for Mexican coke as it still uses cane sugar most the time, so some people are willing to pay extra for it making it worthwhile to import coke from Mexico.

In 1985, when the original Coca-Cola formula (well, _sans_ cocaine, obviously) was 99 years old, they tried to introduce “New Coke”, which was not received well by consumers. A few months later, the original formula was brought back as Coca-Cola Classic, although the new formula continued to be sold, albeit on a much more limited basis, until 2002, being re-branded as _Coke II_ in 1990. Some people have put out a conspiracy theory that Coca-Cola deliberately put out an unpopular variant of Coke and temporarily discontinued sales of the original in 1985 as Pepsi was threatening to overtake them in sales, as executives knew (supposedly) that doing so would create so much demand for the original formulas return that when they finally appeared to capitulate to consumers and bring it back, that sales of the original version would be at record levels for the company.
@JRSiebz Жыл бұрын
They did it because they wanted to shift from using cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup, which is cheaper in the US. People would have complained about the change, if they weren't given New Coke in between.
@a.grimes4202 Жыл бұрын
@@JRSiebz Oh, I know all that, and I’m *💯* sure the conspiracy theorists were not right. In fact, the executive at the time asked about it gave a pretty clever quote, saying “We’re not that stupid, and we’re not that smart.”.

The New Slurm thing was a joke on when Coke did that. In real life, however, New Coke actually tested better than Coke Classic and it was just anger over the fact that Coke had changed that got it changed back.

@@matthewgillies7509 - That's funny, considering blind taste tests have shown, that people generally prefer the taste of Pepsi over the taste of Coke, even if the people asked beforehand said they preferred Coke. Seems people mostly just WANT to prefer Coca Cola, cause it's the original and most famous brand, lol. I drank Pepsi, until they stopped selling regular where I live (sugar-free only now...), so I switched to Harboe Cola. Not quite as "rich" in flavour but a little more refreshing, so about as good as Pepsi overall and much cheaper.

Two words: New Coke. Coca-Cola pulled the same exact stunt. An inferior new version that no one liked, and they all clamored for the original/classic one, which Coca-Cola could then sell for more than they originally did.
