As a Baal teshuva (a secular Jew who became Orthodox later in life) I also felt like people were looking at me and judging but it was all in my head. Most people in shul are there to do their thing and get on with their day. Some people will always be friendly and welcoming, some won’t but it’s more about their personality than about you. Even to this day, nearly 20 years later I sometimes feel like an outsider because my level of learning and Hebrew comprehension aren’t as good as someone who stated in kindergarten but it’s all good. God doesn’t compare you to others, He knows your potential and your goal is to aim high to reach it. You guys are an inspiration!

I’m in exactly the situation as you. I often feel that same level of judgement but I too recognize that the vast majority of people are welcoming and kind and much more accepting than judgmental. I have so much respect for converts especially because you truly came to Judaism completely on your own recognizing the pull of your neshamas toward the truth and beauty of Hashem and Torah. Your channel is beautiful and inspiring.

I'm just blown away by your sincerity and commitment to Yiddishkeit. I know your journey is going to be a successful one. Some of the most important and central figures in Jewish history were converts such as Ruth. As I understand it, the neshamas of all future generations of the Jewish ppl were present at Matan Torah (including converts) so this really is a reconnection and a journey home for you guys. So proud you have discovered the truth through your own intellect. Excited for you to join Klal Yisroel IY'H. Hatzlocha every step of the way!!!

I'm always fascinated about converts. Why was Abraham the first person that truly discovered God? Because he was actually searching for God. If you're looking for him if you're seeking the truth he'll reveal himself to you. The more you feel God the more exciting life becomes. The more distant you are from God the more miserable a person becomes. Hashem is with you guys ♥️

It is obvious from the way you both describe your families that they were a strong solid influence for both of you throughout your life. Coming from such a strong sense of caring and love ,it would make sense that they respect and support your journey, which at this point seems to be very real and solid. It is a wonderful thing to be able to have their support and understanding since you have always appreciated their guidance and know that they are there to support you in your decision to choose this. Your comment about trying to keep up in shul with davening…so we were secular Jews who had bar/bat mitzvot and could read Hebrew…but not very well. Consequently, when we decided to follow our teenage daughters and become Torah observant, my husband davened at home and avoided a minyon. There was no way he could keep up and was VERY self-conscious (so how much more so for YOU?!). When his father was niftar/died, he was forced into a minyon since he had to recite Kaddish three times a day. Now, B”H, he can keep up and so can I. Easy peasy! It’s very difficult and a lot to grasp/process. As you stated, it takes time… but slow and steady wins the race. Yasher Koach on another inspiring video. ❤ you guys!!!

Your videos have been incredibly cool to watch. I've been interested in learning more about the Jewish faith/culture since my mother in law said her grandfather was Jewish. I really didn't ask her more questions, I'd seen a picture of him and thought he was a fair possibly white passing black man, sort of like the ancestors in my family. Because the family line is so far back for my husband I wasn't really sure how we would be accepted by the Jewish community, especially being black people. I guess my goal at this point is not "acceptance," but just to learn more, just to learn about his/our family. Thank you for sharing your journey!

This was the first video I watched after waking up, your energy and sincerity started my day off right. The research rabbit hole.... It's a lifelong thing isn't it? Each question I have leads to 50 more! I'm pretty sure I did Hanukkah wrong because I ran out of candles on the 24th😕 And you guys have helped me explain to my mother why I'm not going to be a messianic Jew. They're being good sports though. Love your channel!! Edit: it's mutual respect with the family though. If they're going to be supportive of my conversion, watch my son so I can go to Shabbat without my wacky 3yo sometimes (he got bored during Rosh Hashanah service and use the heel of his sneaker to dig a hole in my tights, I mean come on 😂) , I'm not going to shun their Christmas traditions and be a jerk or anything and that's why it's been working out🙂

I’m happy to hear that it’s been so seamless for you all! It has for me as well. I had already gone through a conservative conversion, but my preconceived notions of Orthodoxy were smashed to pieces the first time I went to my Shul. Everyone was so loving and opened their homes to me for meals, encouraged me in the process, and I too was never turned away. I’m in a smaller community in VA, and with you all being in CA I think that makes a difference. I’ve heard people converting up north have a harder time because many of those communities are more secluded and probably have less gerim and Baal teshuvot. My community is honestly more BT and gerim than FFB. As always, lovely video!

Over twenty years ago a rabbi who lived in Israel came here to teach for two years in a kollel established by a local shul. He was about ten years old when his folks left the US for Israel. "Black Orthodox Jews" search was smart. I hope you get to meet some of the wonderful families in Israel. One friend, while checking out our neighborhood on Shabbas, asked, "Have they never seen a black person before?" because they were getting lots of stares. I said, "You've chosen to be exceptional. The stares are coming from a place of awe and curiosity. They don't know anyone like you." That was 4 years ago. That conversation hasn't come up again. I pray that they are happy here and will be thrilled/blessed if any of my grandchildren and their children end up building a home together in the future.

@@ayoolukoga9829 Check the ArtScroll translation. It comes directly from the original Hebrew text. For example, the original Hebrew says nothing about piercing hands and feet, rather it reads: "For dogs have surrounded me; a pack of evildoers has enclosed me, LIKE A LION'S PREY THEY ARE AT MY HANDS AND FEET." Quite different, huh? You need to get rid of that King James mistranslation. This psalm is a prayer by David for the deliverance of Israel in the future.

@@ayoolukoga9829 As I posted elsewhere: Your use of Adam as an example makes no sense whatsoever. Isaac was not actually sacrificed. It was a test for Abraham to prove for himself his loyalty to Hashem. This has nothing to do with Jesus. Jonah did not die after being thrown into the sea. He was being punished for his own transgressions. You have no idea what you are talking about. As for your other quotes, as I said, the Greek bible is irrelevant. It goes against Torah. There are some people who are no longer satisfied with the Church and who wish to convert and become Jewish. But then they miss Church music and that whole vibe. Congregation Sinai in Chicago is a Reform Jewish House of Prayer. They have a choir with a lady who has the same rhythm and swagger as a Patti Labelle and she sings some songs in Hebrew and others in English. There is a man who is trained in Jazz Piano who holds the melody. You remember how Duke Ellington used to hold the melody on paino for Mahalia Jackson.... Its like that at Congregation Sinai of Chicago on some friday night services. All the Rabbis recite Hebrew during services. All can attend via zoom.

I'm a Jew from Puerto Rico. Halachically Jewish because it's on my mother's side. My dad was Catholic and looked very Puerto Rican. When I did my DNA test (I know, technically it has nothing to do with being Jewish) it showed ancestors from Iraq to Israel. A tiny bit of Ashkenazi Jews (big surprise). Like 20% Native American (no susprise, on dad) and 8% Sub-Saharan African which showed Senegal, Congo, Nigeria and Ethiopia. So it really makes me wonder if there were enslaved black people from Ethiopia or Nigeria or elsewhere! In the end it doesn't really matters, it's the doing what matters but still there's a lot of mystery when you add the matrilineal element of Judaism. I think that there are WAY more halachically Jews out in the world than what we're aware of. Behatzlacha! And come live in Israel! You're awesome and loved and I'm honored to be a Jew when I see people like you.

Love your guys videos. I am just rediscovering my Judaism. Me and my brother were raised Christian told we arent Jewish. On my moms side though they are Jewish but I think my family had some problems because they assimilated for example my mom, grandma and aunt all got nose jobs. Im only one who didnt. When I went to foster care I stayed with my mom second cousin who is Orthodox. Since then I want to learn more. There is definitely Jews of color (: One of my close friends is the only convert in her family they are Nigerian and she is transgendered and the Shul welcomed her with open arms. I am considering taking the conversion classes with a Rabbi even though I'm born Jewish because I am embarrassed I don't know very much about Judaism at all.

This is probably why you perceive things correctly - there are converts who think they are a great contribution to the Jewish people and when they are not treated that way, they get angry. This does not mean that converts are not a contribution - on the contrary, converts are a great contribution to the people of Israel - but as you said, we should not expect the same behavior from everyone.

Are you familiar with Rabbi Capers Funye and the Israelite Rabbinic Academy? He believe that African-Americans are Jews but they do not discriminate against Ashkenazi or Sephardic Jewish communities at all. We view them as Israelites as well. R' Funye sits on the Chicago Board of Rabbis as well as holds the title of Chief Rabbi of the International Israelite Board of Rabbis. We primarily teach that the original Jews were "black" but as we were forced throughout the diaspora we began to intermarry with other peoples in those lands (Europe, Africa, Asia etc...) which caused their decedents to have mixed complexions around the world. Shalom.

One of my favorite KZbinrs, Rudy Rochman, has said he views converts as Jewish souls born into non-Jewish bodies. Just as much of our people have lived in diaspora & not returned Home yet, eventually all darkness comes to the light; eventually everyone finds their place & their way back Home. #BaruchHashem Would be interesting to hear both of your takes on Kanye West & his racist tirades against our people.

I've come into close contact with a number of _geirim_ over the years. If they gave the opening, I sometimes asked about their story, and it was always fascinating. If they didn't, I respected their privacy. Most of the converts I've met are indistinguishable from those born and raised Jewish, certainly at first glance, and at some stage in the process, that is true of the not-yet converted, too. If I saw you in _shul,_ for example, I might have to be told that I can't count you for a minyan just yet.

Shalom thank you for sharing it’s a beautiful journey. Do you believe you are Gods Chosen seed? Respectfully Is not Abraham’s blood running through our veins? I like how Judaism for the most part is basically standard around the board. Orthodox and the reformed (which reformed is random and not Torah all the way) I understand orthodox. Do you like the order of Judaism? What about the Talmud have you read it? I have read negative things concerning darker skin people in it. It did not sound like love to me. I do believe I am Hashem seed ,I am his choosen seed and I follow Torah, and I believe Yahusha is the word Made flesh. I follow Torah like Yahusha. I feel ya about some “Hebrew Israelites “ the message does not line up with love. I watched to the end. I have so many questions. Thank you for sharing.

@@-Natalie hi Natalie! Thx for your amazing questions. Taking us some time to get back to messages. We actually recorded another Q&A last night featuring your questions! Video will be released next week though. But I’m sure you don’t want to wait that long… 😃 So in a nutshell, me as a woman going through the process, I’m learning to do everything that a Jewish woman is supposed to do. That’s the beauty of the process. ❤️ I get to learn exactly how to live and function as a Jewish woman. However since I have children, Halachically that is my main focus. Every persons situation will be different. That’s why it’s good to speak with your Rav about specifics.

@@-Natalie and no, women especially married women with kids are not required to do as much as their husbands. Men are time bound. Women are not. Brachas… it really takes lots of practice. Study, messing up, trying again, etc. but since non Jews are not obligated to do these brachos, enjoy the learning process because when we convert… we don’t want “laziness or our lack of knowledge “ to cause us to transgress. We are planning an entire video (bli neder), on what we did to prepare. In the meantime, feel free to check out our Amazon store. We have a few resources there 😃😃❤️❤️
