Students are the future, but what's the future for students? To arm them with the relevant, timeless skills for our rapidly changing world, we need to revolutionize what it means to learn. Education innovators like Dr. Sugata Mitra, visiting professor at MIT; Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy; and Dr. Catherine Lucey, Vice Dean of Education at UCSF, are redefining how we engage young minds for a creatively and technologically-advanced future. Which of these eduvators holds the key for unlocking the learning potential inside every student?

This video is very inspiring for any teacher and for any parent as well. The philosophy behind this movement is both modern and observant. By understanding that by not teaching every child as a common group, with expectations of everyone reaching the same goals at the same time is enlightening. This philosophy and knowledge has hopefully broadened many educators in their awareness to give space towards the use of technology with their students. By opening up their curriculum to let each student find their way at their own pace. It truly resonates that this video has the message that self directed knowledge is the future.

This video solicits answers to the question about how to serve students effective educational strategies in the future. The various speakers (some more optimistic than others) offered their ideas, impressions and strategies. I liked Sugata Mitra's observations the best. He offered a concrete plan to serve students by insisting that reading comprehension, retrieval of information and instilling the power of belief (or hope) will cause a student to learn and thrive educationally. He also believes (incredibly) that learning math skills are achaic and will not matter much in the not-too-distant future. Ntiendo Etuk believes that "relevance" is the key to motivating a student to learn, synthesize and create. Sal Khan believes that current educational systems suppress the learner's natural instincts and are ineffective at teaching anything substantive at all. Seth Weinberger believes that the classroom ecosystem has to be blended with the technology ecosystem and by doing so the student bodies of learning institutions will become much more diverse. Catherine Lucey believes that using technology enables students to learn much more efficiently. David Merrill believes that learning as "play" helps people learn more easily. Richard Lang believes that collaboration is key. Richard Baraniuk believes that creating connections is crucial to learning success.

Wow! such a clear, open-mind message that shows us (parents) how much we need to do in order to change the system and help us educate our most amazing asset of all - our children! I truly believe that today's education system places emphasis on things that are not relevant to our world today and probably even less relevant in the next decades. The teachers, as the main carriers, should be among the first ones that need to implement the change but we parents need to help to change the system...

In high School I broke my back playing football and so for the rest of the year until Christmas, I was unable to hang out with my friends. I became lonely and needed something to make me happy. I began searching the internet about anything I thought was interesting and it created a greater understanding of subjects than I have ever experienced in school. I found what I truly love to learn about and now people consider me a "genius" in Econ. I would just say that I desire to learn more every day

I love the 3 things that kids need to know for their future : 1- reading comprehension because they'll read on their screen for the rest of their life, 2- finding keywords for searching and finding information 3- find a way to believe. So inspirational. But as an educator, I feel like I'm really far from this. Even if I can organize my environnement to help student learn that way, what happens next year when they have a teacher teaching the old way ? Are they gonna fall back, fail or fly loose?

What a fascinating video. I think it provides tons to think about. While I don't agree with everything postulated, I am thoroughly intrigued by the way that the video looks at education for today. I have long admired Sal Khan, but I resent his statement that a teacher's job is to suppress engagement and to reward an hour of quiet disengagement. I LOVED Sugata Mitra's belief that it all comes down to reading comprehension. I think too often in education we jump into something new. Maybe this time we can consider how tech enhances--not replaces--traditional learning.

When Seth Weinberger stated that teachers should do the higher order things and let the computer to the basics. NICE! I agree, but I don't fully understand his position. Sometimes the times table is handy because the power is out and devices are depleted. Some lower level learning still holds a place I would think.

As an aspiring inventor I cannot agree with this more. I dropped out of college to pursue my own self education in exactly what I plan on doing. The idea of learning thing because you need to has given me the discipline of reading the most boring datasheets at all hours of the night even though I could be hanging out in friends. Necessity is the greatest motivator and it should be used as such in education. That being said people still need 2 have a base knowledge to form opinions on other things

Somehow, i ended up on this video, and i love that. Technology brought me here to learn, so why can't technology help us teach other things as well? In school,I have so many people in my class along with my self who ask "when am i ever going to use this?" "why is this even relevant?" and the teacher always says "get back to work" or "wouldn't you rather be know too much than to little when the time comes?" and most of us answer "no" because we don't want to waste our time sitting there bored

Hmm... I'm not totally convinced by all of the content of this video. Of course, motivation is important; thinkers like Montessori already acknowledged this in their time and came up new ideas for improvement. But much of the content of this video is so much focused on (information) technology. It suffers of this kind of optimism that we will all have iPads. No questions are asked like: Is it good to live our lives looking at screens. Or will we have the resources for producing all this tech.

From 8:46 to 8:57 is so true. Students are not learning in a classrooom because they are just so disingaged. It is like suffering at your desk feeling like prison. This is useless time kids are attending. Kids could be doing more PRODUCTIVE things that the actually ENJOY instead of being FORCED to go to something that can feel like TORCHER. Technology can change this, it could actually bring the chance for kids to feel like learning isn't being forced like it is now and have fun.

I have been fortunate to teach in International schools, Montessori schools, and Public schools, and I still believe that the traditional way of learning is good infusing technology makes it more interesting because I believe each kid needs certain skills to learn and some of these skills can not entirely be learned in computers. I love experimenting in my class by using different tools and kids love this however these tools are not created or designed by teachers and this, therefore, results in tools that are not designed only to accommodate one skill for kids. Information alone is not enough for kids, for humanity. Skills to survive in different situations is also essential perhaps kids could learn these skills in video games however I'm still yet to come across a tech tool that has been designed to help a student to be a well-rounded human. I love technology and I believe these tools are great for learning however teachers are still essential and a classroom is still a great place for students. Perhaps it's also important to pause and think about what kind of humans we want to see in 2050. I am a firm believer that tech tools are awesome for classes but I think a lot of things should be considered during the designing process.

I do believe that a lot of Learning should actually be in the hands of the People and not of a System. Many of the Greatest minds of Today's Time realized this and dropped out of school to go on and become billionaires. While not everyone can obviously be billionaires, there is no reason that people can't be successful and not have to live in poverty. This is enough for everyone to be successful, if the system will just let us be.

I agree, the teacher is there due to a similar structure of a leadership role in a platoon, or a squad. Where the Leader acertains or is told what to do, and thus has the platoon or squad acomplish it without question or insubordination. So too is a teacher or professor told what the student is to learn and thus have the student learn or master it, and grade it without question as to the degree the student has mastered it...

Catherine Lucey: made the statement, regarding adult education (?), something to the effect of 'You learn something when you have a reason to learn it'. Why limit learning like this? Does everyone learn only because they have to do so? I disagree. Perhaps some learn only when backed against a wall, but so many just enjoy learning and continuously strive to do so. Maybe I misunderstand Ms. Lucey's intention with this comment.

In the UK most teachers I know are embracing technology. Sure we need to do more but don't assume education is the same as when you were in school. I do agree with some points. We have a national curriculum which means all students get taught the same content. This was done to monitor and weed out poor practice. I'm not keen on big govt but I can see why they've done it. we are innovating and are focused on motivation and life skills. Let's have more debate about core skills and self learning.

Some inspiring thoughts in this video, though in quite a few statements, the experts (entrepreneurs) are jumping to conclusions very easily: to conclude that war is the origin of our current education system is a very narrow view and historically nonsense. The same goes for the prejudices about the Victorian period and the repressive nature that would still be engrained in our current school system. To judge on all the information available, to be armed against doctrine, would require other skills such as voicing and expressing arguments, writing etc.

I am currently a high school student, and i believe that there are "other" methods to teaching which may not fully include the use of a teacher, but more of a helper. I can teach myself many things including school work and such. The teachers nowadays seem to be growing further and further away from heir students, the relationships between student and teacher should be strong! but now it is becoming very weak and this is a reason i believe students remain disengaged.

But that's exactly what schools do, they make you solve problem after problem for large amounts of time, and most of this information you never use again, ever. But with games, not only do you solve the problem when you need to, and then use that information given to you at a later point, it isn't forcing it down your throats, sometimes there are other ways to solve it as well but even then it usually does not force the information it makes YOU figure it out at YOUR pace so that YOU can progress

Besides education being too rigid and inflexible, something has to be done about the way qualifications are achieved. Too much focus is put on exams when projects would be much better tools for learning and examining progress and knowledge. Subjects shouldn't be so separated as well. Why should Science and Design & Technology be completely separate classes? Merge them through a shared project!

You're implying that these new educational methods don't require reading, study, and hard work. Plus, all the 'old' technology we use today is the same 'trying to sell something to make a buck for themselves'. Someone writes a textbook (often inaccurate) and sells it to the government for usage by millions of children each year. Isn't that 'bullshit'? These people dedicated their lives to improving and exploring new methods of education, are you saying they can't charge for their work?

I don't think it is right to assume all children are the same and one set of activities is best for all. Right now, having an education system that is too "rigid" makes some fall behind. For the same reason, having a system in the opposite direction may hold back those with abilities to get ahead.

I agree that video games are one of the most powerful learning tools that have ever been created. A child will fail at a game 500 times before they finally master it. Children today want to know the relevance of what they are learning. In the video game they learn the relevance when they bump into it for solving the problem.

At about 4:19 we see the famous hole in the wall experiment where Mitra places computers in the walls of buildings in poor Indian locations. We see scenes of teenage Indian boys using the computers. No younger children or girls in sight. Then the video gives us a close up of two girls looking straight into the camera as if they too are using the computers along with the adolescent boys. However we just see their smiling faces and are led to believe they are using the hole in the wall computer too with the only information we have is their faces - they are not standing at the wall - the video just leads us to believe they are. The next scene is of adolescent boys using the computers - no girls in sight. This video has the odour of propaganda.
