It's like he re-produces live, which makes it so unique. Also this is in 2008 and he's probably more than advanced today than ever. He also might take the pre-recorded stems and load them up but he moves them all the around all the time. Which is so awesome. He really is a generational talent. I wish more people can listen to him

He's got 2 main channels of tracks, 4 effect channels capable on lemur, a sidechain compressor pre routed over drum tracks to each synth midi and I'm guessing....drum tracks are midi? Can't figure how he's chaining drum samples. Monome is going through a preset synth vst and shoots it into a sequencer probably, and he's got his main effects from the lemur shooting into the Xone 40. Everything is quantized so it all goes together Lamens terms, he has a fuckload of Decks. And tons of FX buttons.
@SAYjour13 жыл бұрын
For those not understanding this, he's saying how he gets his live show to sound good. Sounds to me like he basically runs a dry signal + parallel compression, then a maximizer at the end. He uses a ton of gear, which makes it difficult to sync. He also likes gear that allows him to customize.

@jasonlammons Thing is that for a live DJ, this stuff IS actually pretty complex. The more stuff a DJ is manipulating for his set live, the more involved in his music he is, and the more skilled he is (assuming the music comes out soundin good). Deadmau5 is indeed ahead of the pack here.

Sweet 6 months later and i can understand more of this video than i don't understand. Basically he wants to make a "2 hour long production" or what have you. So its not one track, next track, next track like a regular dj set. He wants to be able to mix the way he wants by triggering loops of different tracks and playing them together. And much more such as allocating different effects to these loops. So its a constant party basically and he has complete control over what he's playing! Cntd...

@RYANFERGIE So, once its all mapped out, you can control the program to play clips, and sounds. Since its ableton live, it also has the ability to play a "keyboard" kind of thing, but its through the PC, and you can do the same with BeatPads and anything midi. I hope that helps :)

I was wondering if his requirements and setup would be also possible with Traktor instead of Ableton. He's using a DAW just to mix tracks and add some samples. Is it essential to use Ableton because he's routing stuff around?
@FrictionBassIgnition9 жыл бұрын
Traktor makes things very inconvenient with the limited channels and FX units, and even now there is no option for sidechain compression. Also while you can load two track decks and two sample decks, the sample decks are way too small for the arrangements Joel has (or had, this is ages ago btw) and the task of moving samples in and out of the sample decks when needed imo is just not worth it. The good thing about the Ableton setup (apart from the comprehensive plugin and routing options) is that all of your tracks and samples are laid out in one arrangement. Although, its convenient for joel because the BPM does not change that much if at all. I don't know how one manages playing through a range of BPMs on a single arrangement, I guess Madeon could answer that one.

whats the track at the start? its pretty groovy
@AuralSexRecords13 жыл бұрын
@Girholiday He's doing stuff his own way. It's somewhat complex compared to what is needed, but let me help you. Basically what it all boils down to is, how to recreate live what you produce in the studio. You don't need all the gear he has. All you need is a way to get your tracks divided into loops/bars that you can trigger live. If you are using material already mastered, you're halfway there. Also, use a controller to tweak effects on sequences/loops live and that's your start, right there.
