18:56 - I like how James just finished telling us his crazy movie idea adapting It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World about Universal monsters - including Norman Bates - on a far flung treasure hunt which takes them onto a boat that gets attacked by Jaws, but tells Mike that replacing the Stooges with Dracula's mistresses was "stretching it".

How do you even bring something like the universal monsters into the modern age? The films couldn't possible be scary, and you wouldn't want them to be comedies or play them up as thrillers and then cap off the narrative with a lumbering mummy. I know classic and B movie film fans want them just to want them, but they'd probably be better served to stay in the past as classics. The only one I'd like to see is a Stokeresque Dracula film, although that's because it's bringing a lot more to the table than just a costume.

@66613139 жыл бұрын
+PlagueOfGripes don't know, they could do something more like 30 days of night, but with a more regal lead vampire that would be dracula. the wolfman could cross the best parts of a slasher film with the unrelenting feel of the terminator, and even Ginger snaps was a good take on werewolves. frankinstien and the mummy could be harder, but with 'the monster' it could be done, have the doctor and assistant killing people for parts, and the later half maybe a body horror film where the brain is aware of who they were and what they became.
@CidTheGargoyle9 жыл бұрын
+PlagueOfGripes I think they could make a decent Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot. Enough people are afraid of large bodies of water and what could be underwater that they could play that fear up. They did well enough with the Benico Del Toro Wolfman that the viability of classic monster reboots aren't entirely out of the question.

Maybe they all meet up at the start of the film and actually discuss their modern interpretations. Dracula looks at Coppola's film adaptation of him and complains about everything EXCEPT the three women in his castle and then sees twilight and really goes berserk giving us a more hardcore horror version of Hotel Transylvania''s 'this is how we're represented now' line. The other monsters have similar reactions to some of their adaptations and they all go to Hollywood to try and get better movies made.

I think the Wolfman (2010) is extremely underrated, and had it been released four months earlier on Halloween 2009 it would have performed much better. It really had great atmosphere, and was set up for a sequel at the end with Aberline being bitten. He could have starred in a sequel as the "Werewolf of London". Then the London setting could have been used to springboard Dracula, or the Invisible Man, etc.
@Heavenlyhounds969 жыл бұрын
A beautiful bride could be the Macguffin. Not just any bride though, a heavenly one; compassionate, understanding, maybe w bit of a monster herself but she'll love any one of her suitors; they just need to wake her. Seriously it fits. What does Frankenstein's creature want? A loving bride or companion. Mummy? Oh resurrect a dead princess and mummify her, (but still). Dracula? Well at least in the Coppola film which was good, he wanted his wife as well. The phantom? Ask Queen. :P (Somebody to Love) It makes perfect sense. :)

I do love the Universal classic monsters, and every "reboot" past the original couple of cycles, outside of THE MONSTER SQUAD (if one could argue that was one), has been pretty bad. This idea, I've heard being thrown around, of making the monsters some sort of superhero team in a shared universe is something I hope they never go with. I don't want any more VAN HELSING or I, FRANKENSTEIN films, thanks. However, if they could find some good writers to property rip-off Alan Moore's (everyone does it, just ask him) THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, or better yet, The Wold Newton Universe, then we might have something to work with.

I wonder if they've ever seen/heard of Penny Dreadful. It doesn't take "Universal Monsters," but it does take a lot of classic monsters (Frankenstein, Dracula, the painting of Dorian Gray, etc.) and spin them into a single, creepy storyline

3:05 In late may of this year I went to the monster part of the park and ate at the monster restaurant. It was part of our tour and they gave cool facts about the monster and the actors , they even showed was some real props (not the ones already on display). It was like looking at film's history, from JAWS and Jurassic Park to Frankenstein. I highly recommend that anyone who is a film buff take the tour and see the place , It was super cool. Before that watch all of the movies of course. The tour is cheap as hell and lasts for around 2 to 3 hours. It was the highlight of the park for me.

the maguffin would have to be some magical artefact to make it genuinely useful to each monster, allowing them to fulfill their biggest character specific desire

The "it's a mad mad mad mad world" with monsters you talked about.... already been done. "Scooby Doo and the reluctant werewolf"

Just a heads up, Marvel already got the jump on Dracula . He was featured in Blade 3.

The Macguffin would be buried under a giant cross (so that Dracula and other vampire characters would have to use someone's help to get to it). That cross of course would turn out to be a cross shaped tree or something. I have no idea what the Macguffin itself could be. Maybe something obvious, like a magical potion. Dr Frankenstein would need it for his science, Dracula - to save himself from sunlight at daytime, Wolf Man - to break the curse, Invisible Man - to make himself visible and so on.

The Franken Castle Arc in The Punisher was really good and called back to Marvel's past monster comics. I highly recommend it.

great discussion...big question...should the new films be in black and white/color/3d?

With regards to the Universal Monster movies, I think the TV rights to them might be complicated. But for what it's worth, I distinctly remember watching most of the Universal classics on TCM around Halloween a few years ago, and currently, Svengoolie (the popular horror host whose show is broadcast nationally on ThisTV) has been exclusively showing old Universal horror films for a while now.

My great-grandmother got me interested in the Universal Monsters series. Just like James, she has all the films on VHS and is one reason why I look forward to visiting her every weekend.

To be fair, TCM does play the Hammer horror films a lot around this time of year, and that's how I was introduced to those particular incarnations of the monsters

Great video! Glad we still have a few Horror Hosts like Svengoolie still around on TV (in some states like here in Chicago) to show some of these gems! Happy Halloween! !

Hey James & Mike what do you guys think of the Abbott & Costello crossovers with the Universal Monsters? Just curious on your thoughts. I thought they were great.

AMC and TCM got me through a period where I was banned from the internet because I was able to record all the classic Universal and Hammer movies.. those channels introduced me to those movies. Sad to hear that they don't show them anymore. I knew about the monsters before that, but not Hammer, or tons of other great stuff. After the new Mad Max came out I told everyone to check out The Road Warrior. So many people said "oh that's too old". Come on.. how can the age matter if it's good??

Great video as always! The end part where James is pitching this movie idea should become a regular show on Cinemassacre, it was highly entertaining.

Here's an idea - remake/reboot "The Monster Squad" (1987). That film had all the classic monsters in it, plus it had humor, heartwarming, action & scary moments throughout. That's the way Universal should go in my opinion....

When I watch your movie reviews I often think of comic author Doug Moench, who showed me many great movies as a kid. He's the reason I'm such a cinema fan. So it was ironic to see some of the comics he wrote in this video (Werewolf by Night, Tomb of Dracula)

Concerning TV exposure for the Universal monster films, the local independent UHF station in Washington DC (WDCA 20) used to play a marathon of all the Universal monster films back to back on Halloween. I saw them all multiple times that way. Maybe Marvel could relaunch the Blade franchise and have him hunt Frankenstein's monster, werewolves, mummies, etc.
