To be fair, I grew up during the 80's and I never heard of this movie till the 2010's. I looked up it's box office performance and it did NOT do well (it only made about 3 and a half million and had a budget of 12 million). I definitely did NOT see it on TV either (I didn't have cable, just the basic channels). It only got ONE VHS release during 1988 and nothing else and didn't come to DVD till 2007 (that's when it got popular with a cult following. Before that, few people saw it).Great movie.

The reason you didn't really hear about it is because the Lost Boys came out within 2 weeks of the Monster Squad! Completely overshadowed it. Regarding the language.. it was the 80s! We said a bunch of shit back then that wasn't really considered AS offensive. I think if you grew up watching it, it would hold up better. Andre Gower, who played the lead, Sean, actually made a documentary about this movie called, appropriately enough "Wolfman's Got Nards!".

@@unclecreed2986 honestly, I like them both. Manhunter was more realistic, and Tom was scarier than Ralph Finnes, but there's more of an arc for Francis in Red Dragon. The modern presentation of Red Dragon is easier for me to watch, so gun to my head, I might go with that.

Why even bother reviewing classic movies if you're so reactionary to seeing in past films that the world didn't used to be so damn sensitive and controlled. I swear they bring up how "You can't think ___ is funny in 2019" every single episode that features Justin in it, the tone is completely different when Kieran or Tony are featured instead. I couldn't help but notice this peculiar pattern. Something about Justin simply being in the room changes how everyone else acts, like they are pressured into agreeing with him. I don't think Justin is a bad guy or even knows that he does this to people, it just seems like there is some kind of force within him compelling him to oppress the opinions of everyone around him, and everyone is too afraid to disagree with him lest they be open to social scorn. Why is he like this? Why does it feel like he is controlling the entire cast of Cinemassacre? It's just the strangest thing.

The only thing I remember from that old nostalgic movie is the little girl introducing Frankenstein to the boys and they go into hiding and the little girl says "dont be chicken shit!!"

I have the special edition dvd of this and they have a interview reel about the movie and they got the actress who played her and asked her about that scene and she said that was her favorite thing. She remembers asking her mom if it was ok to say that and was super stoked when she got the yes.

The movie is fine the way it is. People become way to damn sensitive towards words when, while I was growing up, we were taught that words hold no real power but, what you give them. Also, I never understood the phrase; "It doesn't hold up." No shit, it was filmed in the late 80's. People need to stop comparing movies to the modern era. Of course a movie a decade old or whatever isn't going to match the effects of the 00's. You ruin your viewing experience when you constantly look for and compare something that is outdated. Remember from what year your film is from and enjoy it from that stand point

James refers to this as the end of an era but I would say Abbott and Costello meet frankenstein was the true end of that paticular era, monster squad is an homage to that era and also the little rascals.
