but, where's the grammar? you know that there is a difference in context between "will" and "going to", right? And if I'm not wrong when you use "by" in future you have to use future perfect.

Hi, I like your excellent video. May I ask, Which of these two sentences are / is wrong? (1) I'm gonna be in Manila in December. (2) I'll go to Manila in December. If these are all okay, well, I choose (2) because it's easy to pronounce and less letters to write. Thank you!

+Romy Nacido they are both correct! The meanings/focus are subtly different because of the different verbs. Note that (1) is very informal with the use of "gonna", and you would never write "gonna" outside of a text message or an email to a friend, etc.

There is no future tense in English - are you conjugating verbs? No. These are future forms

Gonna should never be taught as a proper verb form. At best it should be included in a lesson plan as a footnote on colloquial, lazy speech.

I completely disagree. If students are going to understand how native English speakers speak, they need to be as comfortable with de-stressed and connected speech--such as "gonna"--as with "will". Making it just a "footnote" means you're not setting students up for real life listening.

***** they should know about it but they should not be encouraged to use it. I always include examples of poor speech in my lessons, but teaching gonna is as bad as giving respect to ain't. I usually pass your videos on to my students, but I'm going to have to pass on this one.

DoMadrid As I emphasize in all of my lessons, learning pronunciation isn't just about speaking. It's about learning how native English speakers speak--in REAL life. A quick "gonna" is not lazy or poor speech--it's a commonly de-stressed verb, which allows the speaker to emphasize the main verb. It should never appear in academic or formal writing, but I believe it should be practiced for optimal listening comprehension.
