A couple of key notes: He uses Sylenth1 and uses presets He also uses loops and samples He puts the creative side of production first, prioritising creating a cool base such as, melody, harmony and so on before moving forward to the engineering side of production He uses stock plugins He works in stages, completing a basic structure for the track and once it’s got a body, he moves on to the details to then goes on to the second part, second drop, break etc. He usually finishes the whole track and then comes back to fine tune all the timbres and details He doesn’t record anything while playing, he figures out what he wants to do and then draws the melody/harmony in the piano roll He tries things out a lot, changing melodies in the piano roll, making mistakes and keeps going on He finishes the instrumental/structural part of the track and then moves on to focus on the small things, details He makes lots of layers. If you wanna make a track sound big, layering is the best way There are no rules to music production as long as you keep it original. Feel free to comment below if you've got more stuff to add :)

Honestly I fucking loved this video because it shows how normal, and similar to you and I Avicii is. No, he's not some prodigy audio engineer that's going to create his own unique sounds/effects. Yes, almost all his sounds are from loops and presets. I personally couldn't care less. When the track is finished, all I care about is what the final product sounds like. Where you think he might be taking shortcuts, or being lazy; all I care about are the combinations of melody and rhythmic patterns. What he does have is a gifted ear which allows him to layer melody on melody and arrange some pretty excellent songs. The best part about this is that it gives hope for beginners like me. I still want to learn as much theory and technical skills as I can, but it's nice knowing that there's potential success for a guy whose best strength is creating melodies.

@Nathanator2 жыл бұрын
*_Some notes on how he did his songwriting/production:_* *Process* - He begins with a piano melody and chords under it, as they are the focus of the track, only selecting sounds after - He then does the bass and selects a sound - He picks a good punchy kick sample, so that the kick sounds good by itself (he cares about every element of the song sounding good) - After he has a good base down, he begins arrangement *Arrangement* - Intro = 32 bars (Low passed strings begin after 16 bars, with the cutoff slowly increasing and a long riser beginning) - Verse = 24 bars (Low passed strings with the cutoff slowly increasing) - Drop/Chorus = 28 bars (kick starts after 8 bars and ends 4 bars early) - Verse = 32 bars (drum loop only lasts first 16 bars, he adds the intro synth back in for a change until the drop, bass is in for the last 8 bars) - Bridge = 24 bars (adds pluck melody for entire bridge, a buildup starts after 8 bars, drums and bass come back after 8 bars and end after 8 bars) - Drop = 32 bars (weak kick plays for 8 bats before being replaced with a strong kick, drums and bass are gone in the last 8 bars and replaced with the bridge melody one octave higher) - Outro = 32 bars (just a drum loop) - Throughout the entire arrangement, Avicii adds a lot of variation and changes by taking out and adding back in elements in order to keep the entire song interesting and to make the listener feel excited. He builds tension by increasing the low pass filter cutoff, risers, and strategically taking out elements at certain points to increase the focus on certain parts of the track. He releases the tension with impacts and with a smooth and strong transition into a new section of the song. *Production* - He layers many synths to get a thick wide sound - He does all the creative stuff (arrangement, melody, harmony) before making tweaks and doing technical stuff (better sound selection, mixing, effects) - He doesn’t follow a specific technical process or use special techniques, he tweaks things based on whether or not it sounds good to him - His skill lies in his creativity, melody, harmony, arrangement, and figuring out what sounds good. He isn’t a very skilled technician or engineer (not extremely good at mixing and doesn’t do sound design) and he doesn’t want to be, he cares more about how the audience feels listening to his music

Saying, that Avicii didn`t do a good job, because he used presets is a bit like saying that an architect didn`t do a good job, because he didn`t burn the bricks for the building himself. A preset is a sound and nothing more. Different Instruments have different sounds. The sound alone is nothing. A piano player is not a bad piano player cause he didn`t build the piano himself. If you want a piano sound you buy a piano and if you want a spinet sound you buy a spinet. There are people creating presets and this is in my opinion not very much different from building an instrument. You have to buy those presets and this is like buying an instrument with the difference, that all instruments can be played with a keyboard.

@@Noplan im not saying he didnt have the talent to find exact the stuff that will work and sound good together, thats another thing... he def had the ear for combining different sounds to achieve a track that ''works'' , but imo a big part of producing is sound synthesis or sampling and modulate that sample, only then u will eventually find ''ur'' sound which will be recognised :D ... but i have to say, i rly exaggerated 8 month ago and i kinda sound like an asshole...

For everyone complaining about presets, realize he's creating the entire arrangement in a single interview. 1. He's not going to waste our time fiddling with knobs when he's trying to show us how he creates a piece of MUSIC. 2. Honest to god, listeners don't care if you use presets. 3. The true measure of a producer lies in the MUSICAL skills he/she possesses, as in hearing the potential a sound has to illicit an emotional response, and being able to engineer that into a mix for maximum effect. Being able to tweak synth knobs certainly demonstrates your knowledge of the plugins and qualifies you as an effects artist, but mastery of those skills does not make you a good producer.
