This is so helpful. My goalie coach instructed me to do all 3 of the things this video pointed out as errors in the T-push. Looking forward to trying out these skating drills!

C cuts on my knee is difficult. Any quick tips on how to improve. I go to afternoon public skates and am often the only person on the ice. So I won’t fall on anybody
@FutureProGoaltendingUSA

Try to “throw your hips to start the rotation then start hammering the c cut motion. Starting with a few c cuts to complete the rotation. Eventually you’ll get the full rotation on one strong c cut. and the more you get the push leg under your body with a smaller extension the better..

Gear set ups and many drills are eye candy. But at the NHL level we are very focused on repeatable, consistent basic things.

As usual, Steve, you provide important concepts in a clear and concise manner. While I have done variations of the drills during my stretch/warmup routine, I will now expand on them to further improve my skating skills. Cheers!

Awesome vid! How do I help my son figure out how to not go into the butterfly too soon. He’s trying out for a team for the first time (10y) and finding out quickly that the rep players go bar down a lot. He’s doing great and having fun but the bar down shots are giving him trouble because he drops down even when the shot is hight.

Hey Johnathan, great question! I wonder what answer you received ? My kid has been working on precisely this issue with his goalie coach. In my opinion, most of the div1/AAA goalies at 11 years of age, where I live, clearly struggle with this. It seems to me that the kids who time their butterfly a little late let in a few "bad ones" on the ice. My kid tends to go down early and has been working on his timing to prevent goals going over his shoulder (especially blocker side). Any advice would be helpful! I will say that my kid is now confident enough to generally stay far out in front of the crease, which helps cut down the angles.

Hello, thank you so much for posting these fantastic videos. If we do not have access to a rink, what are some ways we can pmprove our skating? What would you recommend for a synthetic space? Thank you again.

Beer league goalie here! Any tips on tuning that skating efficiency to when a puck is involved/simultaneously tracking the puck on your feet (off the rush, in-zone setup situations)? I work on those skating techniques (shuffles/t-pushes) in warm-ups often, but it feels like when pucks/players are involved, there's almost a lag/delay while my brain tries to figure out what to tell my feet to do. And sometimes, that lag will cause me to break down technique and just scramble as I realize I'm late getting over.

The goal is to make crease movements explosively and automatic. NHL goalies aren’t even thinking about skating when they play. So try to grab drop in public skating ice every chance you get and hammer away on some of these drills.. You can also send me some video clips and I can give you advice.

A question on skate fitting, how tight should they be? I actually did some training with a coach and when we started with basic c-cuts I was horrible at it and realized that my skates were on the loose side.

It is individual preference to a degree but from a pure physics point of view, and power loss in a joint because of slop will hinder power transfer to the ice. Think of a dragster with loose wheel nuts. There would be significant power loss..

hello, could I ask for some advice. Do you have any tips on gaining momentum with the backwards c-cuts when down? When doing forwards c-cuts when down my heel digs in really nicely and I get a really good push, but backwards c-cuts when down I feel like I either cant get my skate at the correct angle and/or get enough push with the toe to get any movement.
@FutureProGoaltendingUSA

Start by trying to get the push leg a little more vertical and then use 2 distinct pushes. The first push gets you turn going and then second finishes the snap. After a while you’ll be able to combine the two pushes into one big push like you see in the video
