Birkenstocks also makes clogs for working in a kitchen or hospital. When I was a cook I loved my Birkenstock clogs. I love love love Birkenstock’s. I bought my first pair of Arizona’s in 1995 when I was 20 years old and have owned one or more pairs ever since. Yeah people used to make fun of me at first but after some time the people who long term know me don’t even see them or comment anymore. It’s just me. I even bought my two year old daughter a pair. Now she is three and just now starting to wear them. She had to grow into them and learn to walk in them. What finally convinced her was one day after stepping on a bee with particularly nasty results I explained to her that the sandals would protect her. Now she learned to walk in them and won’t go outside without them. I hope the tradition of these shoes will not change too badly with the times. I did notice they now send me catalogs, emails, and texts about sales and new styles. My thinking is hey…I love them but I am simple about shoes. A new pair every 5 or so years is all I need, but I am loyal and will wear them till I die. Maybe I will even request to be buried in a pair. That’s how much a part of me they have become.

A few things about Birkenstocks. The most important is by having a sunken footbed and outer wall, Birkenstocks protect your feet better than standard sandals that don't. Birkenstock used to have a higher end brand called "Tatami" which were ever better than Birkenstocks. Most Tatamis had an outsole that the cork insole would slip into. That made it easy to replace the insole but it wasn't typically needed because the outsole protects the edges of the insole from deteriorating, which is one of the primary problems of Birkenstocks - edge wall breakdown. You can divide sandal design into two schools - over the top and flip flop. Flip flop is where the strap is connected on the inside of the big toe. Birkenstock makes both types. But flip flop is inferior because it always breaks, so always get over the top sandals. Women like flip flop because they think it is attractive, but it limits the life of their sandals. It isn't safe to drive in Birkenstocks unless they are a model that has a heel strap too.

Because of this ''Made in Germany'' stance and pulling their products from Amazon, I just put Birkenstocks on my wishlist. Won't be buying second hand since they mold to the wearers' feet. And while I'm plant based, I really don't get why people are mad they use leather. The world eats a LOT of meat and I would rather all parts of the animal that can be used are used. Could you maybe do a video on that? How is the leather sourced, process, how it lasts, how to take care of it etc.

i only buy them very lightly used for like $20-30 on ebay, ha. still plenty of time to mold to your own & even LESS of an issue with "buying leather." i bought one new pair back in 1998, but ive gone through about 8 pairs now for less than $200.

@Kristina-ek8yt 2 жыл бұрын
@@murrayisarobot I would also really love it if Future Proof made a video about real leather vs vegan leather. Because as I said before, I don't really see the harm in using all of the animal, since they are breed for meat, not for the leather. So the leather use doesn't drive the demand, it's the meat that does that. It's more durable and more sustainable. If we were to cut meat use and we wouldn't need to breed so much livestock, it would be a different scenario...

@@Kristina-ek8yt interesting perspective, I've been trying my hardest to avoid buying leather and suede for the past 2 years but hadn't really thought about the "not driving demand" aspect of it. It makes sense I guess, but I can't personally get past the fact that buying the leather generates more profit for those who slaughter the cows, which ultimately is something I wish to not be a profitable action, and I'd want to play a part in driving demand away from animal resources altogether. I would still say thrifted or recycled leather products would be the best option if buying leather at all, but what you've said is something to think about / look into further for me for sure.

The summer shoes market is terrible. They are either full of details and weird perks that make impossible to style them in different situations, uncomfortable or cheaply made, often all three at once. I owed a pair of beautiful leather sandal that were the best, SO confortable. After many years the time of changing them arrived and I searched literally THREE YEARS for a new pair of sandals. In the end I settled for Birkenstocks because, even if I didn't like them, they were the only quality, confortable option.

They are comfortable as hell , am guessing why they are so comfortable is that the cork footbed molds to your feet over time , great summer sandals, keep by the door , slip off and slip on

I've never seen Arizona's on sale, so when I got a Facebook ad for genuine Birkenstock Arizona's on sale, I was skeptical. Turned out it was a scam, so be careful shopping. Scammers had cloned a legit company's web page. I sent screen shots to the company who verified that it was a scam. It was a couple months ago. I don't remember the company's name.

I was the first person in my hometown (600.000+ people) in Italy to wear Birkenstocks. We're talking thirty years ago. People gaped at my feet in disbelief. Fast forward two years and everybody had them. No, not everybody, but they were not as uncommon anymore. Unfortunately, quality is no longer the same. My first sandals lasted years of constant summer use. The last ones two years top. The only reasonable explanation I could find is that I am now obese (I wasn't 30 y.a.) and the extra weight perhaps wears the cork down fast?

@@paolocardinali3951someone is being judgemental here... Birkenstocks have never been trendy. Italian shoe manufacturing has always been far too good for that to happen. They simply filled in a niche that was empty, that is comfortable, sturdy shoes for the Summer. Not everybody's going to the beach with a four-inch heel, you know.

@@paolocardinali3951 I used to think they were ugly but not so much anymore, I think I like them a lot more than tevas or other sporty sandals. I suppose, like crocs, they are more for function than looks, but really they're so plain that I don't think they can even be ugly. They are pretty non-offensive, to me at least.

I whanted to buy Birks for a long time. Your video made me whant them even more... It was very helpfull that you showed how they were made and with what material because im allergic to latex... Now, i know i can't have them unless they have a latex free version. It might be a bit over thinking but you might just have saved some people from a anaphylaxic reaction that would have come from nowhere. I would not have tought about shoes beeing a potential source of danger.

I don't own any Birkenstock sandal, but I have 2 pairs of lookalikes I bought 20 years ago, before I even knew what a Birkenstock was. I don't know the brand but they were produced here in my country, Portugal. They're really good quality and have endured a lot, have been at the cobbler (yeah, I just learn a new and useful English word), have been soaked in water and are still in great shape.

I had plantar fasciitis in both feet. My feet were so painful that I couldn’t have acupuncture done. I got Birkenstock sandals (Arizona) and my feet would feel better after I walked than they did before I walked. So wearing my Arizona had a therapeutic effect on my feet. I am still wearing them twenty years later.

Short answer. Yes. Yes indeed. I have been ride or die Arizonas for like 30 years. I got a new pair for Christmas because racoons stole one of my last pair from our deck and chewed up the cork beyond repair.

Personally, as someone with extremely sensitive feet, Birkenstocks are my go-to. I have 3 pairs (different models). They are pricey but they last for years, and I have recently found a place here in the UK that can re-sole them and even re-do the footbed with original Birkenstock parts, which means they can be virtually restored to a pretty much brand new pair many times over. They are hard at first, sure, but once broken in they are the most comfortable thing ever.

I still have a pair of Birkenstock Sandals that fit my feet (size 18), that I used for Beach and some regular outdoor summer lounging. But then I also have a pair of Dunham Boots, and a Minnetonka Moccasin Hat. Ya really do need to figure out what works best for you, in your specific situations. And sometimes, if you're not within the average (too short or too tall), you may have to find something more specialized.

Personally i feel that Birkenstock have gone down hill a lot since they exploded onto the mainstream towards the end of the 90's, when celebrities started to wear them (I think Dicaprio was the first if i remember :) In order to scale production to meet demand, they had to compromise on a lot of their authenticity and original quality, compared to when they were a relatively unknown 'old-persons' sandal maker in Germany. I own a pair of Mephisto Sandals, which are far better quality and build than current Birkenstocks. They're still hand made in France and still source all top quality materials from Europe, basically the way Birkenstock used to be before.

Mephisto uses a foam midsole, and is a knockoff. Is doesn't even look like remotely tried to get the footbed right. If they have gone down hill they must have been damn good to begin with because I saw a video by Rose Anvil where he cut them in half and tested the build quality and quality of materials against other knock offs and they were pretty damn solid.
