I'm a Nutrition and Dietetics student here in Australia. We recently looked at the nutrient content of Prime. It's currently not available in Australia as Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) have declared it illegal to be sold. We found that Prime has very very high levels of Vitamin A, so high that it's above the Upper Limit of vit A (borderline toxic). One can of Prime gives you at least 2 times the recommended vit A amount per day. Chronic consumption of this drink can result to liver complications in the long run. It also has twice the amount of caffeine as existing energy drinks such as Red Bull. It's very concerning that KSI and Logan Paul predomenantly have a very young audience and they are consuming it.

As a runner who does 5ks 10ks and half marathons my go to drink is always water. If I'm feeling it I'll make my own home made "sports drink" which is just lemon or orange juice with some honey and some salt in it, this I usually make only during the summer time. I stopped drinking sports drinks years ago when I noticed that after my runs they would just make me feel sluggish and gave me this feeling that I had ran more than what I thought. It was mostly due to all the sugar in it that was making my body crash. And everything said in the video is true, most if not all of us don't need sports drinks in our diet if we are already eating a healthy diet. I get the appeal of stuff like Prime especially for younger generations who are always on social media and see it on their screens but it doesn't take too long to go over the labels and really check to see what you are putting in your body and that's what I try to teach my younger family members, that not everything presented to you is always true. I really think the people who actually benefit from sports drinks is blue collar workers especially in hot climates. Die casting and foundries, welding, construction, etc. They legitimately sweat a lot, and the sugar is good for keeping up blood sugar when you're legitimately expending a lot of energy and can't take a break to eat something. However, they seem to mostly appreciate powder mixes to add to water, like my factory has packets of it in vending machines (for free, you just scan your badge). So the premixed stuff isn't even useful to the people who would need it most. Gatorade is incredible when you have a stomach virus, then you REALLY need whatever sugar and minerals you can absorb

@isaacdavidson7985 Жыл бұрын
I did further looking into the ingredients and in my opinion the biggest flaw of this drink is the artificial sweetner, but this is already common in pretty much all zero calroie drinks anyway. As far as electrolytes while it doesn't have sodium, potassium is another very key electrolyte of the body which is why you see bannas after a lot of 5k races their high potassium content. So this aspect really isn't completely a fallacy. However the main electrolyte that's loss during sweating is sodium thus why sweat is salty, so having such a low sodium content just kinda hurts its intended purpose. As far as all the other "chemicals" that are in the ingredient list they are just added supplements that we already have in are body that are associated with with muscle efficiency, recovery and growth such as zinc, magnesium ,vitamin A, and vitamin b12 . Then there are several added amino acids that also aid in the similar functions. So in my opinion on paper it seems like a low calorie somewhat useful sports drink and may have some benefits and cons compared to others but like a lot of other sports drink unless you're really go hard the benefits would just be comparable to drinking water.

As an elite cyclist/KZbinr, I have spotted some misinformation about sports drinks in this video. For high performance in any sport, it's all about the carbs intake before and during the effort. You WANT that 20-30g carbohydrate per bottle to perform at a high level. World tour cyclists are taking up to 120 g/carbs per hour with a mix of food, gels, and drink mix. The electrolytes don't increase performance, carbs/sugar does. The electrolytes are usually good to prevent cramping, that's it. So yeah, Prime is not a ''performance drink'', it's a beverage. Gatorade zero with not sugar is not a ''performance drink'', it's a beverage If you want to perform, drink and eat carbs!
@RBzee112 Жыл бұрын
He never once says electrolytes increase your performance. He said sports drinks 'claim' to replace what you sweat out during a workout. He also said that all sports drinks are basically BS.
@dykam Жыл бұрын
Required electrolytes intake is going to depend on sweating etc. It's not "just cramping", though that's probably the most common symptom of a shortage. That said, there's better ways to consume them than most marketed "sports" drinks. But consuming more than you need AFAIK yields nothing and if anything stresses your kidneys, that's correct.
@audreysavard3248 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I was in a sport program when I was a kid. The nutritionist they invite say exactly it. Water is enought for a easy to moderate level of sport. A well balanced diet will be suffisant to cover the need in carbs and the lost of salt. Theses "sport drinks" are only usefull on a intensive sport for more than hour. Rare are peoples doing competive cyclism but lot are sadly drinking those sport drinks or proteine shake.
@ska042 Жыл бұрын
@@audreysavard3248 Yeah that's kind of the thing, there's almost no overlap between drinks good for sports and drinks healthy for general use. For multi-hour hard endurance efforts, you WANT tons of sugar (whether from maltodextrin/fructose/sucrose, whatever) and it's ok to consume all that during the effort. Like 80g per bottle, which you drink in an hour or so. However drinking that kind of thing day to day is a bad idea, just super unhealthy because you're not actually burning all those fast carbs right when you're drinking them.

TW: eating disorder ED survivor here, had to spend months in a residential unit. Many of us were so skinny and immaciated we couldn't absorb nutrients properly. Most of us were "perscribed" at least one 12 oz bottle of Gatorade a day for the sugars and electrolytes. The goal was to eventually stop having to drink them as we got healthier. That is probably the only time i can imagine a sports drink being beneficial to a person...

never tried prime (and i don't want to tbh) but the social media angle definitely works, unfortunately. especially on the younger demographic they both have. kids where i live go crazy for it when, really, it's probably not the best thing for them to be drinking at a young age

I work in a store and we've had people back into the back to see if we have any in there. People have driven for like four hours to find them and we sell out by one o'clock when ever we've got them in.

I appreciate the deep dive. I do enjoy the drink, but it is good to be reminded that I do not need it. Also good to know about it's failure to be a proper sports drink!

If it ends in ose, it's a sugar, fructose - fruit sugar, lactose - milk sugar, so sucralose = sugar sugar? 🤔 Wikipedia says it's a mix of fructose and glucose fwiw

One thing i will say is that i can believe that the supply shit was like a matter of the demand grew faster than they anticipated and weren't really ready to scale production. However on the flip side as someone who lives in the uk, anecodotally the prime in the supermarket i worked was significantly discounted before being put on clearance for less than half of the price, and it still took ages to sell. I don't think we sell the stuff anymore

It’s not for athletes Prime is barely a sports drink. It’s a fake sugar juice drink that tastes like an energy drink but marketed towards kids. Sports drinks are mainly for the average consumer not just pro athletes.

this adds a new layer to the experience of watching a child drag his mom into vitamin shoppe to try to track down a very specific flavor he wanted

I knew absolutely nothing about the history of the "creators" or the product until now. I have been dealing with some medical issues and was told to drink something with electrolytes. It's also very possible that I'm low in potassium and that will be known once my blood tests come back. I have tried many electrolyte drinks over the years and couldn't stand any of them, including gatorade. I cannot stand salt flavor in a beverage. On a whim, I tried a Prime and it actually helped calm my nausea and dizziness. If there's no way a person will drink an electrolyte drink that tastes like it has salt in it, is it still at least slightly beneficial to drink Prime? It does have 10% coconut water in it, but the flavor actually masks it so I don't gag from coconut water flavor either. I don't like the most common flavors, but I really enjoy the lemonade and the Cherry chill or whatever it's called. Maybe because I only started drinking them a couple of weeks ago, I have never noticed there being any shortage. There's only been a few gas stations where I couldn't find them.

I HATE influencer backed things so much T_T We just started selling PRIME where I work. I was sad... It was selling because they are youtubers. People lose their bloody minds... I saw it and I think I just find Logan Paul so distasteful I actively avoid it. But yes I drink sport drinks because I don't handle water well. I'm not an athlete anymore but I don't hydrate, "Ade's" are better than power drinks. And I can't have the powders you at the water. But yea, water. it just doesn't taste like anything, and we want variety. it will be interesting to see where this mess goes.

@SirEvilestDeath2 ай бұрын
Electrolytes are salts true but are used in hydration drinks to prevent water loss. Literally to clog the pores. They are not used in drinks like these to specifically replace what is lost, they are used to slow down the loss of water…

We sell Prime at my store and when anyone asks if they should buy it I laugh and tell them it would be better to just drink more water.

I used to work in conservation doing state park preservation back when I was in my late teens and early 20s and we had a no sports drink rule when we would go on spikes and backcountry jobs (Jobs where you're hiking and camping for days or weeks at a time) We used to take these tablets that were basically just salt and put them in our water ... The issue with sports drinks is the sugar it may work great for short time periods but sugar in large quantities causes issues and some of the sugar substitutes are even worse ... Most people just need water

It’s all kids. Children have grown up watching these two guys and are the main consumers of this beverage. That allowed it to grow so quick that it became mainstream and now it’s becoming normalized for others to purchase as well.

Sugar also helps the drink dissolve into your blood quicker in your body, which is another reason why it is added in high amounts to things like gatorade
