Well, those Rotor designs are engineered to spin stably at high RPM. Actually, you CAN easily mass produce those with Casting Dyes. Just don't expect forged hardened rounds. I still miss Danny.

Knowing Evan, these have likely been machined down which means all the work (cuts they make) they do to make them balanced have been machined off and they’re stamped because it’s cheap and tolerances dont matter so much, because they’re going to be stabilised. The fact they’ve then been machined afterwards (a step that the manufacturers were trying to avoid) they’re likely really pretty okay even though the balancing cuts have been machined off.

I've been in electric motor manufacturing for 21 years. The process used to make these is kinda straight forward. we have alignment jigs with a center post and alignment keys on the edges. You grab a bunch of the steel laminations and slide them onto the jig, and then tighten a cap onto the end to hold them into place. We then either dip or brush an adhesive to bond the laminations. those get cured, then the stacks are removed from the jigs and put into an oven. We dip the stacks into a fluidizer machine. The fluidizer pumps air through a powder from underneath, making it loose, like quicksand. It's like powder coating but with dipping a hot item into quicksand. we use a roll of paper on the inside diameter to protect it, and roll the still hot stacks on a large sheet of paper on a roll to take the powder coat off the outer diameter. From there, they can have the inner and outer diameter ground to specifications. That's how you make these armature stacks! If you continue the manufacturing process, thick paper, or plastic wedges are inserted into the slots to protect wire from the edges of the metal, and wire is then wound on a winding machine, and then inserted into the slots. The appropriate connections are then either soldered or crimped to either leadwires or to a commutator or slip ring, depending on the type of device being manufactured. Brushless motors have the stack fixed to the motor housing, and have leadwires or terminals. The rotor uses permanent magnets on the rotating assembly. Most brushless motors have the stator around an inner rotor, except for hub motors, where the magnets are on the outside body, and the whole body of the motor spins around a central fixed stator. Brush motors have an inner armature (what you see in the video), and have the coils wound and connected to a commutator, which is like a spinning electrical switch contact. They can have either magnets or a fixed stator winding as the fixed outer body. Other devices like Synchros and Resolvers are sometimes used in the aviation industry, or in military or space applications. Synchros have both a fixed stator and a rotating armature, but use slip rings to connect the armature. They are used as amplitude modulated analog rotational position sensors. Resolvers are similar, but use an extra pair of stator and rotor coils to energize a brushless rotor, without using slip rings or commutators. They output a phase angle based output derived from the sine and cosine of their energization signal. These are almost never, ever seen in any consumer device. Some older style analog tachometers use a fixed stator winding and a drag cup or drag disc to introduce more or less eddy currents through the drag component, which is just a disc or cup made from a metal like brass. as it spins, it generates electrical fields through itself, and those fields are picked up as induced current in another coil. Today, these have mostly been replaced by magnetic hall effect sensor chips, but were relatively common in many older machines that had some manner of tachometer attached to a motor.

I like the cheap fish gel block. It seems to 'set' the stress areas and leaves the bubbles or fracture lines in the gel far better than the clear stuff. The Yellow gel traps the expansion zones. Very cool. In the clear gel, you only see the expansion in the slo-mo shots.

Lead plate, meat, and gel all in the same video! I hope these three are becoming the standard for the tests. Would love to see some of your favorites re tested in the plastisol. I’d say don’t worry about testing the different softness of the new gel, what you have works great and shows the what the round is doing perfectly. FBI standard is not important for your tests, and arguably capturing the slug is a much more useful data point.

13:13 Honestly I prefer this block to the perfectly clear one because being translucent but also with a color tinge: allows for a much greater degree of definition and detail of the wound cavity to come through on camera. There's more contrast which makes it a lot easier to see the details. Even if they were the same price per block (which they're apparently not) I would still prefer this block because I can actually see more detail on camera. Kick the video quality up to 1080p and have a look: you can *really* see what went on in that block. Which you couldn't see with with the clear nearly as well. Just to show it's not subjective: go through some previous vids and take a screen capture of a previous video using the clear gel, and at the same video setting take a screen capture of this block and then put both blocks on screen side by side. You can visibly see a lot more detail come through with this block, compared to the clear due to contrast. This is much better for the audience. Up close and in person the clear may be better - but on camera - this gives the viewer a lot more detail and definition and it's not even a close race.

9:25 This is patently evident to anyone following Firearms channels for any length of time. @deucedeuce1572
@deucedeuce1572 2 жыл бұрын
Always wondered how that happens. They'll just have a shit in the Point of Impact, but they won't be any less accurate. They still group, but just in a different spot. A little higher or lower would be easier to understand, but the POI can change up, down, left or right (or in combination).

Actually Jeff, these *WOULD* be practical to make if they end up working well, _even if_ they are still wound in copper... Belt sander with high grit, grind down the shaft and the copper on each end with in a few seconds, and the wire inside that's left will drop right out. Because it's pretty likely they will NOT be potted into the armature since they're small motors. However, if they do kick ass, we could just order the bare armature stack from some motor maker. Just tell them you want to wind them yourself for a custom application 😁 (now back to the video, only 1/3rd into it now lol)
@DUKE_of_RAMBLE
@DUKE_of_RAMBLE 2 жыл бұрын
And since the long one didn't fly well... If they're cheaper to cut if half -- they pry in half, but from experience on the laminated stacks for primary coils, you'll probably ruin a few layers on each side -- compared to buying two of the smaller size... all the better maybe?
@ObservationofLimits

If you could find the manufacturer and only buy the armatures it'd be cheap as hell. The magnet wire windings are the majority of the cost. The armature is just stamped plates.

@@ObservationofLimits Man... But it seems like _maybe_ the motors used in the cars for Slot Car Racing, might be the right size armature?? 🤔🤷‍♂️😞 Though this did make me wonder.... What about just shooting an *_ENTIRE_* cylindrical DC motor? 😁 Or even a "segmented stator" _with the hooks still attached,_ to act as fins... (it'd need a bulky sabot) 🥴

The Plastisol is a winner as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, it may not be a perfect replacement for the gel, but it's definitely close enough. It's enough to give you a very good idea of what's going on, while saving you a crap load of money. Until that last video, I had no idea that stuff was that bloody expensive. Granted, I don't know how difficult/expensive it is to make, so I'm not commenting on the company that makes it. But for what you're doing, that kind of money is a bit nuts to be spending. It's one thing if you're doing some kind of testing for the military or whatnot, where you want the results to be as close to real life as possible. On the other hand, knowing what it costs is kind of irritating when you think about where they get the money from, but that's a whole other subject for a different time. For what you're doing, the Plastisol is way more than adequate. Especially if you can get a few more uses out of it before it turns to mud. Very, very cool stuff. Edit: Plus, it's nice you don't have to fart around with the stuff melting in the nuclear sun out there in the, um, accelerator testing facility....

@@taofledermaus plastisol should recast fine if it's essentially the same stuff for soft plastic baits. You should be able to adjust the "toughness" (how soft/squishy it is) as well. I don't recall the exact chemical adjustments though. I can't remember off the top of my head, but you should be able to get 5-gal pails of the main component of soft plastic for pretty damn cheap. Dig around in some fishing forums. I could have swore there was a cheap homebrew gel recipe too that was relatively cheap.

i think the plastisol looks really good. it would be interesting to see a side by side of FBI standard ballistic gel with the plastisol. i imagine you could get the plastisol to match the standard gel's specs. i've always been told that ballistic gel is really only useful to comparing rounds to each other within the context of the same standardized gel mix. if you could get plastisol to match that standard, then you could also compare plastisol to existing data for ballistic gel (the classic comparison of 7.62 from an AKM vs 5.56 from an M4 comes to mind). Not that is really matters, but i think it would fun lol
