This video is the eighth in a multi-part series discussing computing and the first discussing non-classical computing. In this video, we’ll be discussing what optical computing is and the impact it will have on the field of computing.
00:00 Intro
[0:27-6:03] What is Optical Computing - Starting off we'll discuss, what optical computing/photonic computing is. More specifically, how this paradigm shift is different from typical classical (electron-based computers) and the benefits it will bring to computational performance and efficiency!
[6:03-10:25] Optical Computing Initiatives - Following that we'll look at, current optical computing initiatives including: optical co-processors, optical RAM, optoelectronic devices, silicon photonics and more!

It's funny how smarts peoples can be so dumb at the same time. Optical computing is worthy research. But it is like putting horses behind the carriage. The choking point of multi-cores is the data buses and this address buses. And both of them could be replaced by optical technology NOW!

@@zijkhal8356 The speed of light is dependend on the medium. It is actually faster in copper than in fiber. The determining factor here is interference. An electrical system will always induce an electromagnetic field (It couldn't work otherwise). This will actually disturb the signals. If it were as simple as switching on and off copper would be faster, but since the datasignal is modulated onto a carrierwave fiber is faster since the smaller interference allows for a higher frequency wave to be modulated onto the carrierwave.

There are many misconceptions in this video please go to wiki and read more : A further misconception is that since light can travel much faster than the drift velocity of electrons, and at frequencies measured in THz, optical transistors should be capable of extremely high frequencies. However, any electromagnetic wave must obey the transform limit, and therefore the rate at which an optical transistor can respond to a signal is still limited by its spectral bandwidth. However, in fiber optic communications, practical limits such as dispersion often constrain channels to bandwidths of 10s of GHz, only slightly better than many silicon transistors. Obtaining dramatically faster operation than electronic transistors would therefore require practical methods of transmitting ultrashort pulses down highly dispersive waveguides.

The main issue here is: are any (or all) of these things artifacts of the absolute limits of physics, *_or_* are they things which can be overcome through better technology? I feel that it's important to at least research possible new tech, as it almost always yields better understanding, breakthrough products, or both. tavi.

"Speed of light" and "flow of electrons" (0:40) is very misleadnig, since electric signal is faster than optical signal (due to the permeability) and it has nothing to do with the "flow of electrons"! The faster "speed" is due to bandwidth and not due to speed of electrons/photons.

Gee, I did not exactly undersatnd your line of thought, but I have a few comments as a person working in fiber optics for many many years:1. light velocity in a glass fiber is actually slower than signal velocity in a good copper conductor. The term "doing X at the speed of light" is wrong. The problem with copper lies in the increased attenuation (loss of power) as the frequency increases due to the skin effect. In light the attenuation is insensitive to the communication frequency.2. What you call "signal degradation" in a fiber is not due to slow or fast velocity, of to loss of energy (attenuation), but mostly due to dispersion - the fact that different wavelengths travel at different speeds in the glass.3. In fiberoptics we use a variety of wavelengths - between 850 nm to 1600 nm. We could easily use visible wavelength, but at these wavelengths, attenuaion is quite high due to Rayleigh scattering. Therefore, I think that the advantage of photonic computing lies in the interaction (as you showed) and not in the latency.Would love to read your comments

Thanks! This is a fascinating field, and one that - strangely - doesn't seem to get much press. I often hear about Moore's Law for transistors, and various ways to tackle that issue, but I seldom hear optical even mentioned as a possibility! In a world where we expect to be a full Solar System species in the not-to-distant future, it's vitally important that we *_do_* discuss and consider optical, as it *_will be_* the way we calculate - and communicate - in such a future. Looking forward to more!; Rikki Tikki.

Does anyone here recall the great difficulties scientists (and corporations that backed them) had with developing LCD "flat panel" displays? Development of them, in earnest, began in the early 1960s and the running joke was that LCD TVs were always "just ten years away". It was over 40 years later that LCD displays (finally) started displacing traditional CRTs as the dominant tech in the marketplace. The problem was the enormous challenges scientists were facing with developing the *materials* and *manufacturing* techniques required to make full-colour LCDs good enough to compete with CRTs. So far, researchers trying to develop photonic computing devices are facing obstacles that are equally as daunting (if not even more-so). What I've heard is that getting optical gates to work reliably is really hard to do and, again, it comes down to shortcomings in materials technologies. It looks like graphene-based chips will hit the market a lot sooner.

I agree, despite a great content, the voice is hard to follow, please pronunciate more, slow down a bit and be more dynamic because now it's so linear, if you want more people to follow you.

While ur all tight, he has real potential, he just needs to develope his enunciation, but everything else is perfect-even the slightly monotonous tone just perfectly fits this production style-and its actually what i like most. For eunciation though, some of those silly voice warm up excersises would help. Or just doing the recording at certain times of the day or scenarios (like while hanging out with certain friends, I tend to speak much more intently and clear)...

he needs a high pass filter, also he needs to slow down and sound less like napoleon dynamite. no offense, just a note :)

Awesome vid! I'm curious to know how quantum entanglement will play into this field. Will there be any issues equivalent to bit-flipping? Or maybe other strange quantum effects, like when lining up three polarised lenses letting photons through where two will not. Forget the name of that one, but it's freaky.

Good presentation: and to think Siena Corp was already doing this stuff back in 2001 when I worked for their pcb manufacturer.

So if you make a matrix multiplier optical ALU, you can shine different couples of matrices at it in different wavelengths each, provided you can then filter the output and seperate the different results.
