I still remember this great song from the Late Spring/Summer of 1968 when I was 12. What set it apart was the guitar and the repetition of the words ‘I Love You’. Listening to this now I feel like I’m back in that time with all its memories both good and bad…

Larry Norman was my guitar teacher for over two years. He taught me this song when he wrote it before they recorded it. Loved this song when it came out. He was a very good teacher and a nice guy. I saw him at a Creation Music Festival at The Gorge in Washington about a year or two before he passed away.

The definitive version of this song. Eclipses all others with one of the most urgent guitar hooks ever. The vocals have a presence and clarity of the highest magnitude. Listen to great music all day. The guitar riff from this one will be the last song wafting through your brain at the end of the day. That crazy Hammond organ solo adds the energy of a hungry tiger to the mix. Can't miss with this one!

I used to live across the street from these guys when i was in junior high school in San Jose. Used to watch them practice in the garage. They were our neighborhood rock stars. It was a huge deal when they got a recording contract and played this song on KLIV. It was a huge hit locally and i believe it got some nationwide exposure as well. What a thrill to hear this again after so many years. Brought back great memories of those happy times so long ago.

In 1975 when I was 12 and at a friend's house, she played an obscure record that I had never heard before. Her older sister made fun of the song because the lyrics weren't very....original, I guess. woodcutterdude Yeah, we're getting old man. I was 16 when this came out and I hadn't heard it in at least probably 20 years. I just heard it twice today on TV as the background music for a strange new 'Got Milk?' commercial and I had to find it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHXbgnZvjZd2gdE The milk ad music is the original recording played a little faster and chopped up. You can tell by the piano solo instead of the People's version with the organ. The song was originally written and recorded by The Zombies - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWfGYp6VZ5uHac0 but the People version is longer and the vocals are better. I found many versions of the song by both bands and I was surprised to find a concert video from about 5 years ago of The Zombies and they do the People's cover version of their song in concert!! I have the People album in my vinyl collection and I'm gonna have to dig this out now.

A great song for those of us who remember. Yet for some reason it just popped into my head. I thought I would check it out. The guitar is so good especially the begining. But it's the memories it brings and whatever the hell made me think of it after more than 20 years that make it so special.

Thanks for sharing this! Very interesting! I grew up in San Jose and used to listen to KLIV in San Jose and KYA and KFRC in San Francisco. The Syndicate of Sound and Count Five were also from San Jose but my favorite group was the SOS! People's hit song naturally got alot of airplay here but it was never a favorite of mine. But glad it did very well on the charts. (Local radio today is dominated by Spanish and Asian stations and the golden days of local radio are gone forever. VERY sad!!)

I believe I was 14 or 15 when I saw this band live in some little building in San Jose, California. Maybe it was a school gym....my memory won't quite kick in. The room was small and all the overhead lights were on. My friend and I were sitting cross-legged on the floor - right in front- when the guys in the band came in and sort of "milled about" before starting the show. I remember feeling like I was a part of one of THE greatest experiences EVER, LOL. Those were the days, my friend......

J.....wow...thank you for your story....I always remember this song...listening to it on my AM radio when I was 11......this song should be rated higher than it was....Billboard rated it as #53 for the year 1968....shows you how good the music was back then....Hey Jude was #1 for the year, Jumping Jack Flash was #50, Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay was #4 and #97 was Suzie Q by CCR.

My band in high school played this song when it came out. Years later, I discovered Larry Norman’s great, great album “In Another Land.” Larry, the blond guy in People, went on to become an early Contemporary Christian music artist. A friend of mine did sound for a concert of his in the late 80’s and told me, “Larry Norman is without question, the strangest human being I have ever met.”

I was eight years old when this song came out. I had an older sister and brother that turned me on to the cool music of the Sixties. This song was one of them. I remember seeing this band on American Bandstand perform this very song. The B-side to "I Love You" was another great song, "Somebody Tell Me My Name".

I've been listening to the Zombie's version for years... never knew that it was actually made into a hit by People. I can see why the People version was a bigger success... the production is great on this. But what a shame that the Zombies couldn't get it to chart. Zombies was without a doubt the most underrated band of all time. Geniuses that were as good as the Beatles or the Beach Boys, but somehow didn't prove it to the masses until it was already too late.

I just found this song and i love it. here are the lyrics I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say I should tell you I love you, I do The words should explain but the words won't come I shouldn't hide my love deep inside The words should explain but the words won't come I should tell you just how I feel and I keep try-y-y-in' But something holds me back when I try to tell you I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do-o-o I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say I shouldn't hide my love deep inside The words should explain but the words won't come If you could see what you mean to me The words should explain but the words won't come And oh, how hard I try to tell you I lo-o-ove you But something holds me back when I try to tell you I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do-o-o I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say, yeah! I should tell you I love you, I do The words should explain but the words won't come I shouldn't hide my love deep inside The words should explain but the words won't come And oh, how hard I try to tell you I lo-o-ove you But something holds me back when I try to tell you I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do-o-o I love you, I love you, I love you Yes I do but the words won't come And I don't know what to say I love you
