God, watching that part of the stream made me feel ancient. When I was in elementary school, the library had machines that could run the 5 inch floppy discs, and the city library had the 8 inch ones. The computer lab in middle school had brand new Apple II computers, complete with Oregon Trail, Pipe Mania, and Battlezone. We got to play those only on Fridays, after we'd completed the computer OS lesson plan for the week. I remember when my family upgraded from Windows 3.0 to 95, and thinking how cool the new Solitaire card designs looked. The office in my high school wood shop had some old computer with the original SimCity on it. We occasionally got to play it if we stayed there after school and the teacher decided to let us in. Being a millenial means being born in an era where you can remember what existed just b4 the tech boom in the late 90's. So I know literally everything and had to use literally every old device made in the 19 hundreds. Imagine that. Not being alive in the 1940s but being so poor you had to live with 1940's stuff and use it like it was normal. So when I say I know about boomer stuff it's because I lived like a boomer in my childhood. That's just the sadness of being poor in the 80's. These days even if you're a poor kid you can get a cell phone with your parents plan, have access to video games via a cheap laptop, and still live the same kinda life as any rich kid online. The best part is that you don't have to know about any of the technology that existed 5 years ago in order to do it either. When I was a kid, if I didn't know how to use a rotary phone, calibrate an old black and white TV, or play board games, your only choice for fun existed outside... and even then, you would have to learn how to fight or you'd just keep getting beat up by the local bullies with baseball bats.

god i was there for everything from the time of floppy disc. my first consol was technically the atari though saga was likely more popular at the time. the atari was just something my parents had stashed away but i remember playing it, then the fat gameboy with the double A batteries, the saga, super nintendo, nintendo 64, playstation 1, dream caster. i fell so old.

I feel like FUWAMOCO might've just grown up in Japan or something hence why they don't know the english names of stuff like floppy disks or casettes and never grew up in a place with Scooby doo on TV. I know Scooby doo from mysyery inc. and from internet culture, cause I consume a lot of American media. It might not be the same for them. I didn't know about Cobra, because that probably is only popular in Japan and it released in the 1980s, so I would think the opposite is true for Fuwamoco, where they know Cobra but don't know scooby not cuz their zoomers, but just grew up with different culture Bijou has no excuse though

Thinking about it, it is kind of strange that the 3.5" diskette did not receive it's own proper- or nickname and kept on being called floppy disc like its predecessor, because let's face it for the end-user nothing about it was floppy. At all.
@stevemccarr Жыл бұрын
Well, the actual disk that held the data was floppy, it's the case and slider assembly that weren't. Also, some were rather cheaply made so you could bend them around 70° and they'd spring back
@MrCh0o Жыл бұрын
I assume I wasn't the only one to open the protective window and poke at the disk itself at least once
@TheJjcczz Жыл бұрын
Because the 8in, 5 1/4in, and 3 1/2in were all floppy disks. The housing was only added for protection and to remove dust particles from the disk while it spun around. They’re called floppy disk’s because that’s always been the official name of thin magnetic data storage disks that bend. Putting them in a protective plastic shell doesn’t change that
@Finsternis.. Жыл бұрын
Some people apparently don't know how nicknames work. Yes, I am very much aware that the magnetic disc itself is rather floppy. That does not mean that humans that use the thing alot could not ever pick a new name for it that appears more fitting, because the *average user* - as I have already pointed out - does not actually experience any floppyness unless they a) try to break the thing or b) already broke the thing. So while I appreciate people sharing information, I have explicitly removed that particular point from considerations for a reason.

I mean, nothing about what the end user experienced for any format was a disc.

I am a child of the '80s, I know old things. Personal computers were being developed as I aged. I remember floppy disks, and when CD-ROM drives came out, they came out originally as single-speed drives. We had the orginial _Star Wars_ trilogy, _SpaceBalls_ , and the _Lord of the Rings_ cartoon movies on VHS cassettes.
