The Pettyjohn RAIL is fresh from the new Core series, a beautifully contoured format packed with studio quality components. RAIL takes a different approach to fuzz, by not relying on old transistors or diodes to clip the waveform. Instead, it significantly boosts the gain into the voltage rails, creating a full frequency fuzz and distortion. Part of this pedal’s magic stems from the dual rail internal power supply that doubles whatever you feed the RAIL from 7-18V DC, providing a great variety of tones, textures and headroom. The 8 position Drive knob manages way more gain than a standard pot and is your key to dialing in subtle grit to a maxed out gated fuzz in Infinity mode. The EQ offers a powerful pre-drive Lows filter from 30Hz-1kHz and a post-gain Highs control that sweeps from 22kHz-1kHz. If you’ve never liked fuzz, the Rail offers the intensity and sustain of a classic fuzz but with so much more definition and player controlled dynamics. Sounds pretty nice. I've got a fuzz face clone with a knob to cut (or boost) bass before clipping and it makes a huge difference. I'm glad to see this on another pedal.

Not much fuzz in that fuzz pedal. Sounded far closer to an overdrive pedal with a few distortion characteristics to me. Sounds good, so don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't go to that pedal for fuzz.

It's all technobabble unless you can explain why it's all significant. Otherwise you're just spouting off marketing stuff that has dazzled you with bullshit. And I guarantee you it uses transistors. Opamps chock full of transistors.

Sure, there are many transistors (usually 20) in an op-amp but the significant thing is that this pedal doesn't use the common 2-4 discrete transistors as gain stages like a Fuzz Face or Big Muff would to generate its distortion. It also doesn't rely on diode clipping, which is what overdrives and distortions use to generate their dirt. I didn't design the circuit but I believe Pettyjohn's description of the circuit (link above) so read more on their webpage. To clear up the power supply, you can feed it 9V and the pedal will automatically double it, increasing headroom. Since you can choose from 7-18V DC, there's a wide range of 'crunch' or 'textures', since voltage has a huge affect on tone and compression. Thanks for watching!

While I don't expect Andy to be an EE, this is indeed BS. This just means that the opamps are clipping instead of discrete transistors or diodes. Personally, not a fan of opamp clipping, and it is almost universally avoided, but with the right EQ pre and post, I guess it can sound fine... But it is absolutely marketing BS, every fuzz facish pedal in existence is using gain to hit the voltage rails.. that's what clipping *is*! Diode clipping is used because it is softer and less harsh (and requires less gain) than the opamp/transistor/fet/etc. clipping.
