Here's a major technical difficulties moment that cropped up during an airing of an episode of Lost in Space on KTVT Channel 11 in Fort Worth, Dallas, TX.
The clip starts innocently enough, at the end of a Wendy's commercial offering 2 hamburgers for $1.00 on its 10th anniversary.
Next comes a station ID slide commemorating Veteran's Day - only we hear the voiceover (by ??) announcing the dreaded "We are experiencing tech--" before stopping.
Then, about 4 seconds of what appears to be olive brown, before going to black for 40 seconds, while the full "technical difficulties" voiceover is heard and Lawrence Welk's 1962 cover of the Henry Mancini composition "Baby Elephant Walk" (from the 1962 film "Hatari!") is played and (after 1:00 or so into this clip) the "One Moment Please" slide is finally seen - and its levels skewed with - for another 90 or so seconds before we see the same olive brownish tint...
... and then, finally, the Lost in Space opening act, with typical dialogue between Will (Billy Mumy) and Maureen (June Lockhart).
This aired on local Fort Worth-Dallas TV on Sunday, November 11th 1979 (not from Chicago, but still interesting nevertheless.)
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:
