On an FWD car Sometimes i use the trail braking technique ,and some other times i prefer to brake before the corner and then turn without braking.i think it depends from the corner,and sometimes it is necessary to trail brake for a short moment,then lift the brakes ,roll into the apex,and then give gas
@ssbb_builds2090

Correct, I have experienced this aswell. It depends on so many things, setup being a big one. If the car is very stiff & nervous, it will affect how you turn in & then trail braking might not work because of the over ration. If the car is fairly forgiving then you could get away with it.

Wow, amazing video. Right before the trail braking section I had a major ah-ha moment (no need to trail brake because of weight distribution over front axle and trail braking applies pressure forward which uses up the tires traction). Plus IDK but force to the outside front tire would exceed inside front tire.
@ssbb_builds2090
@ssbb_builds2090 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Look there is a place for it but it all depends on the setup, corner speed and the condition of the tyres/track. But as soon as I figured it out, I had so much more confidence on turn in because the car was a lot more stable .
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
More mass over an axle makes it slide sooner in a turn, and have less grip. You have added more inertia to that axle than what the tire can make up for due to load sensitivity of tires. By definition you need to trailbrake more in FWD cars, everything else equal.
@stevenyoon3867
@stevenyoon3867 2 жыл бұрын
@@ArchOfficial Your argument would make sense if tires had an infinite amount of grip. FWD cars aren't like RWD cars where you dance around the slip angle as you trail brake into the corner. Ideally you'd want to balance the car around a little bit of understeer since the rear axles do not put any of the power down (going sideways takes away grip from the front so you want to mitigate slip as much as possible). What you're talking about works in rare occasions (like overtaking) and even then, you'd be putting too much wear on the tire. Most of us aren't racing our cars so it wouldn't make sense to scorch your tires for the sake of maybe 1-2 tenths. Not to mention driving like this puts you at more risk for making a mistake which could cause an accident.
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevenyoon3867 Tires don't have an infinite amount of grip, hence you need to overlap inputs to use the most of it. Tires have more grip when combining inputs than when doing them more in isolation; you have more grip if you brake into a corner and turn, or accelerate out of one and turn than if you do them in isolation. At least with modern radial tires. Of course there is a time and place for everything and it will depend on the setup too, I'm not saying to fully overlap inputs everywhere if the car doesn't like it. It's not a FWD or RWD or AWD thing, it's just a track driving thing. You want to be on the gas before apex in some RWD cars too in some corners, generally faster ones. You want to balance FWD cars around mild neutral steer so that you can use the throttle to modulate it out and gain higher total grip on the car, in addition to heating the front less and heating the rear more. Although like you say there is a limit to this and too much rotation actually ends up heating the fronts too much compared to the rears. The rears do heat relatively more than the fronts, but the fronts gain too much heat for it to be practical to do it. Just because you do not want to do it to save your tires, or you cannot do it reliably without a mistake doesn't mean it isn't true. In an endurance racing scenario there will be less overlap and less rotation, trading off immediate laptime for long-term tire performance, so this isn't the best thing for every scenario. It is generally true. Usually when stiffening FWD cars, the benefit of overlapping inputs becomes less as the car is more and more oversteer biased inherently and requires earlier throttle application, but it will depend on the car too.

Honestly a great video, I think the only thing I really felt it was missing was the benefit trail braking can give you. I totally understand that this is going for mostly in a track environment. But on mountain passes and other really tight roads and such, trail braking is fastest than pure grip in my expierence. This could also be because I drive a crx, my car weighs a whole 1650lbs with a short wheel base and brake bias around 80-20. If im coming into a tight corner, and send it into a 4 wheel slide, it's faster than trying with pure grip almost everytime

Sorry for a late comment very good demonstration and delivery. I race fwd circle track and want to tell you to be a top competitor youll have to learn to balance trailbraking and late braking. Youll get dive bombed trying to straightline brake as opposed to trailbraking your 100% correct with the brief time you allow your cars chassis to be neutral then well as i call it then you give it the beans lol. Thank you for this video however rookie racers would learn a lot and be safer and understand their cars better.

Thank you, really appreciate it!! I think the most important thing to focus on as a beginner is braking in a straight line before you turn the steering. It is natural to "trail brake" & there is a place for it but when you start doing high speed stuff, a FWD can swap ends on you very quickly depending on how stiff the car setup is. Next thing is to warm up your tyres for about 1 lap. Again, you don't want to be caught out with the rear swapping ends on you through a fast corner. Other than that, go to the track, do laps & have fun. The rest will come to you. I have a FWD setup video coming out in the next few weeks so keep your eyes peeled for that aswell. Thank you for your support!

@@ssbb_builds2090 Hello, awesome video mate. Helped clear a lot of doubts I had. But at 22:56 is there a possibility of flipping the car? I run a right handed fwd polo mk5 with a pretty stiff suspension, yet out on the track even wide turns scare me once the outside tyres load up when I'm taking those left turns so I back off quite a bit and lose lots of lap time.
@ssbb_builds2090
@ssbb_builds2090 2 жыл бұрын
@@rasheriff Thats champ, appreciate it! There shouldn't be a risk of flipping the car if you are on the circuit or track. Iff you go off & the front wheel digs in, then yes, there is a very real possibility that the car will roll. I would say take it slowly & learn the boundaries of the car. Often these cars have so much more grip then we think but also, don't jump in & try too much. Be patient & learn the limits of grip. Good luck

In my car-a regular road-worthy FWD hatchback-I find myself applying a little bit of throttle throughout every turn. I feel it makes the car go through the curve more confidently. I assume that’s because-in regular road driving-I don’t slow down really hard before each turn, so the car will not “float” through the turn as mentioned in the video. I downshift for every turn to such a gear that will provide just the right amount of torque at the wheels if I stay on the gas gently. I do go off the pedal before the turn, however, making use of engine braking. If I wish a brisker exit from the curve, I do find myself gradually applying more throttle as the curve straightens, indeed. I’m not a very experienced driver, but this came to me naturally. I hope you guys don’t mind my sharing it here.
@ssbb_builds2090
@ssbb_builds2090 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Marek. Yes, you need to do what works for you especially in the beginning. However, on a race track, when you are really on the limit, feeding the power in too early will result in understeer. In wet conditions, you will fedd the power in earlier to have more control over the car for sure. Good luck, drive safe & thank you for watching!

Hey man We take the brake booster out the car, this helps with modulation on the pedal which assists with locking up. It could also be the brake pad , like Endless pads have mega bite soo you have to get used to them. But with the booster out it’s much easier to prevent a lock up. I would also install a brake bias controller (proportioning valve) on the rear brake line. Take away rear brake to stop the rears from locking up.
@borisdookie7
@borisdookie7 8 ай бұрын
@@ssbb_builds2090 Ah that’s a good idea. Its always the front that locks up, I ease into the brake to keep it from happening but feels like decelerating G is much lower than anyone else’s. Idk if too high front spring rate, stiff rebound or too much caster could cause poor traction during braking. Lowered camber to -2.5 and added caster to 4.5 to try and help gain grip. Hawk HP+ pads on stock brakes so nothing crazy, BFG R1 tires 205 on 15x8. Ordered some 15x10 front with 275 Hoosier R7 lol maybe that’ll do it?

A few corrections: There's only forward inertia and an inwards lateral force from the tire, at least if external forces are to be concerned. There is no "centrifugal force" by definition. On that note, don't mix up mass and load. None of the mass in the car is being transferred anywhere from inputs, except perhaps the driver, fluids, objects in the car; but (hopefully) none of the car's mass is being transferred anywhere. You lose grip by loading a tire more, and you gain grip by unloading it. No, I didn't get that backwards. Grip and acceleration force (be it laterally, longitudinally, whatever) are not the same thing. You do always get more acceleration force by loading a tire more, but it's a decreasing relationship. In any car tire I've ever seen, you "lose more grip" than you "gain acceleration force" in proportion. That's why front-wheel drive, front-engine cars with a front mass bias (and consequently load bias) inherently understeer, while rear-wheel drive, rear-engine cars inherently oversteer. The lateral acceleration force of the tire hasn't been increased in proportion to the mass (= inertia) added over the axle. This is pretty important to understand for setup. Bear in mind that mass =/= load. Transferring load with dampers, or adding load with aerodynamics doesn't add inertia to the place where the load is being added; but adding fuel, or installing lead weights or whatever will. This is why aerodynamics add grip to the tire that they're applying load to; it's effectively free load without the accompanying inertia. Mind you that loading the driven axle of a car can and will increase the longitudinal force that axle can generate in pure acceleration, the above are related to lateral behavior.

Thank you for the video! One point there you have mentioned that it is not recommeded to use trail braking on FWD car to avoid oversteering. Is that correct for a slippery road too? When I drive my car on a snowy road and try to do something like a trail braking I always get understeering instead.

Thank you for watching. Its probably because there is very little grip on the road due to the snow/ice. In that case, drive very carefully & try find the grip. Drive safe & thanks for watching.

I've been wishing to drive like joshima aka God arm lol now this convinced me 🤣🤣 Great video thank you for the info you helped me understand a lot, I've been able to let go of the brake right wheres she behaves smooth around corner so it gives confidence to gain more speed on the next time but my steering is not smooth and my speed is ither the same as last time or somewhat worst and not smooth at all lol but sometimes it happens for me and the exit of the corner feels amazing and like I said that gets me thinking about more speed and I end up with something not that satisfying 🥴 But what I notice is that in cornering in my my fwd is to came fast on the corner in a gear that power is not crazy so I dnt understeer when gas it but it gives me enough juice to come out of the corner pretty quick, but agian my car is not really set up for anything nor do I track but would like I just find lonely windy roads where curves are 20 mph and I'm am very satisfied when I can do them between 40 to 45 sometimes 50 depends on the conditions of road and how my mind is and of course these speeds at are as im exiting the corner not in the middle of it lol but if its a road I've never driven I couldn't do that for sure. I loved the video im probably gonna rewatch it like 10 more times with more focus. Thanks agian and stay blessed 🙌 🙏 and good look with ur chanel, I love my fwd lol and its like one that you wouldn't expect 😄 its 00 solara 3.0 supercharged 5spd, and than I have an 00 mr2 spyder and well that one is already quick in the twisties but dnt want try to learn about her yet she scary lol cuz am im a noob but she's really fun 😉 hoping to swap her in a couple of years to the 2zz motor but im not ready for her like that yet. And yes I know how front heavy that solara is but in the end thats more of the challenge I suppose my wife's little matrix xrs blows my solara outta water in those roads I dig her matrix lol 😆 😆 I'm subd for sure 👍 I must know more lol

Absolute pleasure!!!! Thanks for the great feedback. It’s a long road to getting quick but you can find really good gains in just being smooth. Setup of the car plays such a huge role but in essence, you can gain alot by just driving properly. Good luck 💪🏻

Own my first FWD car (8p A3) after having six RWDs. Although for racing application I appreciate the insights, especially not trail-braking (been doing that the whole time!). I don't track but do like to push my car on the street, and would like to get the most out of it SAFELY. Any more tips would be greatly appreciated.
@ssbb_builds2090
@ssbb_builds2090 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen Thanks for watching. I would say get there car setup reliable. What I mean by that is make it quick but predictable for the street. Start with a good set of tyres. This will depend on where you live so if you have allot of rainfall then get a good all round tyre. Hankook RS4 is pretty good. continental extreme contact sport is also a good option. Get some good brakes & dampers that can deal with street conditions. With regards to driving, it’s the usual FWD story. Don’t get on the power too early, release the wheel mid to exit etc. Trail breaking is dependent on the setup & corner. I don’t recommend it in a FWD but there is a place for it. In a road car it’s ok, but the faster you are driving, the more dangerous it becomes. So be careful. Good luck 👍🏻

@@ssbb_builds2090 Thank you! Currently refreshing the car. Just fit brand new Pilot Sport 4 (4S aren't available in smaller sizes), and Brembo OEM replacement discs and pads. Will be tackling all drivetrain mounts/bushes/ball-joints now (polys for most of these). Car is a bit soft for my liking but will look at springs/dampers last. I'm also intrigued by a bigger rear swaybar, but honestly I haven't had to deal with the type of understeer that is commonly talked about, think it applies to the track mostly. In my hands it has been far more important to pick the right line and speed, then be judicious with the throttle, ZERO understeer....unless I'm just not going fast enough lol!

One of the most important things that wasn't mentioned but should be added in addition to this info, is to know the road you're on. Being familiar with the road makes it easier to push it a bit with these techniques. Cheers!

What about slight left foot braking on exit as to prevent the inside wheel from spinning and being a left to get harder on power? I feel like that could be beneficial in an open dif fwd

Can you add more tire pressure to the rear tires on a FWD to help reduce understeer? Or putting on different size tires in the back Thank you for this content. Subscribed, saved video to re-watch as I do more track days. My car is 63% front 37% rear weight distribution and I have limited slip in front tires.

Hi, thank you for watching! Yes, I normally run the rear quite a lot harder especially with a semi slick tyre. But I would be careful on how much harder so start off with about 15% more pressure then the front. Good luck

@@ssbb_builds2090 thank you for replying. I came across something I can not understand but maybe you can. First my thoughts agree with what you said running more pressure in rear to help reduce understeer. Two people shared with me two different sources that claims to reduce understeer run higher pressure in front tires and lower in rear tires. Do you have any idea how that would make sense? Thanks My next track weekend I'll be running on Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFT tires because the Michelin pilot sport cup 2s get expensive.

@@334trax2 for "calm street driving😉" on my Peugeot 306 GTi i run 2.4bar front/2.3bar rear. that is because the car is very light at the back(its a hatchback) so it oversteers on liftoff/entry. on a sedan or an estate(my dads passat 2012) you can put bigger tire pressure in the rear but it will oversteer on bigger/faster truns(somewhere above 110kmh) but try learn liftoff oversteer because it can set you up for the mid corner very nicely, i do it even in the passat(ESP doesn't like it hahah) I mean im still trying stuff out but you can contact me on ig @peugeot306.cro

How does LSD change corner braking and throttle out the apex
@ssbb_builds2090
@ssbb_builds2090 3 жыл бұрын
This is a very good question. From my experience, the effects of trail braking are very much the same depending on the diff setup on deceleration. With a LSD, you can get on the power earlier and actually use it to get the car to turn mid corner . But there is a balance to this as too much power will break traction aswell. But there is a significant gain in mid to exit corner speed. Thanks for watching 💪🏻

What can one do when they enter a corner too fast and start to understeer(in a fwd). If I lift off the car may oversteer. If I keep my foot to the floor the car will keep understeering. If I brake the rear may violently swing around. I guess unwinding the steering wheel and quickly trying to regain front traction is the only option???
@ssbb_builds2090
@ssbb_builds2090 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom, great question. Yes, open the wheel & brake until you feel the car has slowed down enough to be able to turn again. That’s why I always say build your speed up & don’t try break the lap record early in the session 👍🏻

I think 65-75% of front weight distribution is a big hyperbolic, B5 A4s were known for being very front heavy with FWD models having a claimed 61% front weight. Maybe all of my reference points are all skewed by FWD Euro cars, because Volvos on the far end barely reach 57%

Just sayin its funny, on my Cruze with stock suspension and 200TW tires, driving like a maniac with quick inputs can be faster than a smooth driver. I let a more experienced guy drive my car after his car broke, I beat his times. Driving crazy gets you only so far and wears out your tires.

Correct, there is a level of aggression you need to be fast but there is a limit to that. You go over the limit & you just burn out the car. So the trick is to get to that limit & be smooth on the limit. A lot easier said than done especially in a road car. Thanks for the comment 💪🏻
