Erasing specific memories would be very beneficial. For example, erasing childhood trauma, guilt over something terrible you have done, overcoming horrific memories from war that lead to PTSD etc. We need this technology sooner than later. Some of this can be achieved today via therapy, meditation, and prayer but it's not full erasure. It's more like learning how not to access those bad memories. Sort of like compartmentalizing them and whenever the brain tries to go there you block it and say, "No!" Try it. With enough practice it can do wonders.

Most people think of the pros but there are cons to 1. If someone is helping you erase memories then they could remove more than you wanted, or even remove the wrong ones ( intended or not)2. Could cause amnesia 3. We wouldn't be able to learn from our mistakes4. Could be addicting since its seen as an "easy way" out of your problems when really they are still there 5. The possibility of forgetting the ones you care about (in a bad way)6. Remembering painful memories 7. Could change memories (remembering things not the way it actually happened)8. Unnecessary to know everything that happens in your life9. Etc... The point is that its not a good solution and people could manipulate you to do what ever they want It's pretty much mind control

My first memory is when I was two or three. My memory recall is very vivid, I remember every teacher I had from nursery through primary and secondary school and through college. I remember specific dates and times that significant things happen in my life. I even remember what meal I ate on significant days that specific life events happened. Because I have synaesthesia, songs are linked very strongly to specific memories but this is not the case with every single song. I can recall the smell and layout in just about every room I have ever been in, for example my classroom when I was five years old. I don’t think it is normal to have such an extreme autobiographical memory as I have, from experience people are often very shocked and don’t recall so many things like I do. My memory has its benefits and its disadvantages. Abbenefit is that I will remember what somebody said to me even if it was years ago, they try and out right deny what they said if it was something hurtful but they will always get caught out because I’ll never forget. A disadvantage is that I cannot forget very easily at all. I recall every instance in which specific people bullied me or hurt me. Whereas most people told me that I should let things go, I actually can’t just forget like everybody else seems to

That alone is reason enough for research like this to be publicly known. The government, ANY government is more likely to use this in a militant way if it's secret, and the general public doesn't know about it. If private companies can fund and engage in the research, it's more likely to be used in an ethical way. No guarantee, but more likely.

People with severe depression can still get electric shock treatment. It used to be use a lot and I don't think it's talked about much these days as it seems very controversial. When people have it done the doctors say they just loose their memory of the short time around the therapy but I've known someone who lost their memory of the entire year before and after.

in my opinion the concept is incredibly useful, and incredibly interesting. I have no issues with that sort of experimentation. I can see some sort of abuse being possible with LTD, but if it involves the time for the neural pathways to decay I don't think it's feasible to destroy memories out side of clinical research. Since I don't feel that abuse is likely to Happen, I see more optimistic events more likely. Events such as improved memory retention in students without the need for excessively long study sessions, focus enhancing drugs or mnemonic devices. imagine remembering calender dates, grocery lists, or operating instructions after shorter training times, leading to a more skilled and more educated work force. I imagine it would help in reducing the drop out rate of high schools and universities due to an inability to keep up or understand the content.

The thing that lets all creatures forget any and maybe even everything is sleeplessness, the exhaustion of your brain is immense when you are sleep deprived, no thought stays and close to no new ones are created. I myself have my PhD. and do those tests on myself, of course I have self awareness if I go into any danger knowing when to stop. And did you know that when you eat it isn't only essential but it can be a habit up to an addiction, it is recognized to be the most common addiction and habit to be on this world. It also makes you forget anything that happened in a certain period, and with that you call to your memory what you can remember best, either what you ate to breakfast up to what you did 10 years ago.

Just thought about something. This is ALSO a super way to smuggle information from one place to another. PUT a memory into someone, then at the next destination, it is removed. No evidence that they were even involved. A women goes into a Massage Therapy place, is relaxed, falls asleep and an hour wakes up and comes to the conclusion that the best therapy she needs is a nice week long vacation in some other country. Hmmm.... wonder why she suddenly decided to do that?

I think this is good research to do, better than what scientists "usually" get up to. I say this because erasing memories could actually make you happy if just say your whole family died somehow you're life would seem not worth living but get rid of the memory and you're fine again. You won't miss what you don't know. And well... Who doesn't want better memory :)

It doesn't really haunt me now, but I think this is a great idea of having your memory altered. Also, could you possibly insert memories from other people into your brain making you believe you had that memory? (no bad memories. plz) Sorry if the question sound stupid. I think that researching this is quite interesting. It would allow for reconditioning of those with bad habits and convicts. That being said. I do not feel comfortable or safe in the least knowing that if this were understood well enough, it could be used to essentially control large numbers of people or even a few key people in a kind of mind control. This is definitely a science that carries just as much good as it does potential for bad.

There are definitely some memories I would like to put somewhere. Rather than waste my own small body to contain. Freeing space would be good. There's no need for me to remember useless and painful things. I'd be happy to put them in a backup hard drive or something. Maybe put them in a database and organize them based upon what kinds of memories they are. I wouldn't just delete them. But at least temporary moving them would be something nice to try. The brain also forgets things easily. Some things I don't want to remember are pesky and won't go away. But some memories that I never want to lose are lost over time. I would like to back them up so I can restore them frequently. Having agency over my own memories, what I remember, and being able to back up and keep save, and categorize the memories I have would be nice.

Not always death besides anything can kill a person practically. Experiments are used to test a hypothesis in a controlled environment and Mendel experiment with flowers to try to understand gene didn't kill him and there are other experiments such as formulas for food, vitamins, or material for other product we consume that didn't kill and progress our understanding and ability to manipulate with control a desired outcome. Not all experiments outcomes are life threatening or else why would there be occasional experiments in school.

I'd like to raise another question here. Once you have an indefinite lifespan and health, you enter the immortality dilemma: everything you can achieve in life will eventually be achieved. What's the point of existence after that? Wouldn't you have to choose between either voluntary death or eternal boredom? Perhaps your natural human brain wouldn't retain memories from a couple of centuries ago, but what if you also have an enhanced brain that won't let you forget your experiences? Wouldn't be then the case of erasing some memories so you can indefinitely learn and experience living? Or choosing not having an enhanced brain?
@иєвєит
@иєвєит 9 жыл бұрын
Whoaaaa this is deep. But it's super interesting! How can you be eternally bored, also, with so many things you could do? Would you just run out of stuff to do? But how is that even possible, with an equal infinite amount of opportunities? Still pondering on this one.
@Vini-BR
@Vini-BR 9 жыл бұрын
Nicole Benito Maybe, a regular brain that isn't normally able to grasp so many subtleties of the environment and philosophy at once, will experience the process of learning for much longer than a super-brain that depletes almost everyting that can be learned almost at once; the latter, apparently, is a lot more prone to face boredom thereafter, while the former will always be constantly learning something, forgetting, relearning, making mistakes and correcting them afterwards - and THIS is living. I don't think I want to live forever to be productive in any way - I don't want to "serve" for anything, but as a living entity, everything else that serves a purpose would ultimately serve me. So, I'm not personally that big enthusiast of enhancing human habilities - however, surely I really wanted to live 'forever', this is enough, I am thinking now.

We are all immortal with our souls after they leave our body and become part of the universe we come from the stars and we become the stars and that is true because when the stars die out their atoms become other atoms and when the star goes supernova and does not form a black hole and is reborn and planets are formed within a certain range depending on the star called the Goldilocks zone which is actual astronomical terms of the distance from the star that is not too hot and not too cold like our planet is and the development of life is similar to how we became and this by the way is just an example. Our bodies are more toll but there'll as old as time is it self and here is a theory where does the matter go with enters the event horizon as we all know from science you cannot create nor destroy anything it just transmutes from one thing to another. So does a black hole send matter to know alternate universe through the exit dubbed the white hole and why do we call The one hole that we can see black and the one that we cannot white and this is just a theory of mine

stuart pratt But before you prove with consistency and the scientific method that souls even exist, you cannot make a statement with "souls" on the wrong presumption that it is agreed that such a thing exists. Anyone that would look forward to such technology looks forward to losing his/her humanity...losing themselves. *"Yeah but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."* - Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jurassic Park)

If you lose most of your memory's live for a few years then get them back you will never be the same person again plus it can be used in very bad and evil ways besides that

Good beginning, as long as this technology is used for good intentions without abusing it for personal benefit.. This could make instant learning a lot easier, and not to mention that we don't need schools anymore lol.. Stuff like this could change humanity as we know it today..

It depends, it could be good, but if used wrong, it could be wrong. If you were to do something, like let's just say, rob a bank, then be like, kidnapped, and got your memory erased, then you could turn into a criminal for somebody else.....

i think it's really amazing for so many reasons. a lot of people get deppresed or even commit suiside because of memories and many people need their memory maybe to capture a criminal or remember where there key is and so on to make it short it's because some people need to remember forgotten memories in order to live and some need to be forget memories but the true question is can it be missused? can people inplant memories that never even existed? for every technology is used in both good and bad ways

Great - I know I will love the outcomes overall, I hope... It helps those with traumatic experiences of loss or whatever else to forget, but, I do understand that it could be used for evil, but, I still like the overall help that it gives to those with a traumatic past... Hopefully better oversight will limit mischievous outcome from this kind of research.

Also now there is a technique to detect wether or not a person posses a specific memory. Stanford Professor of psychology, and neuroscience Anthony Wagner has come up with a technique using a FMRI machine, and a computer algorithm detecting blood flow in the brain. The computer algorithm looks at this blood flow to deteminewheter or not it reperesents a memory, or a novel experience. So the FMRI machine scanned the brains of the people, looking at the 2000 photographs, and the algorithm studied the blood flow, and tried to detemine ehich ones represented memories Versus new experiences, and the technique was right 75 to 95% of the time.

Mixed feelings here. Like any technology, it's all in how it gets used. The threat that someone might use it to re-write your memories is of course quite legitimate. It's a matter of: to what extent are you the sum of your memories?. If someone unscrupulous re-writes your memories, do they change who you are? Then again, learning more about how the brain accesses and encodes memories could have some excellent benefits: What I'd really love to someday see is the ability to link your brain to artificial memory extensions with specifically programmed memory packages. For example, say you need to fix something, but you know nothing about how it works. What if, just as you can go to a hardware store and buy tools you can also buy a memory extension that contains intimate familiarity with the thing you want to fix. Plug in, and just like that you know whatever you need to know to make the repair. Unplug, and your brain is just you again. So... why not just *learn* everything for real? Well, have you tried living in the modern world? We've become a world of specialists with sometimes disturbingly specific specialties out of self defense. Yet things keep changing constantly too, which turns it into a psychological threat every time our specialty is threatened by some new innovation. It would be nice if there were a very basic set of life skills you needed to learn "for real" and the specialty stuff was just plug ins that could be added when you need them.
