Ok, not 400 yards and it's not a PCP story, but........I can't believe it - yesterday I just went 8 for 30 shots on my 2' x 2' target from 200 yards with my Crosman Diamondback 177 break barrel using H&N Baracuda Match 10.6 grain pellets! I can actually achieve about a 8" grouping from 150 yards too on a good day. NOT BRAGGING...just celebrating with you in amazement of what you can achieve with these airguns today!

What would your effective range be using much cheaper pellets? These slugs are about $.07 each. Pellets could be as low as $.025 ish. .22lr is $.12 ish. This sport is high volume shooting and from a pest control perspective, what would be the most effective choice? Also considering hit rate will never be 100% but more like 60 to 75% maybe on a good day. Lots of ammo.

Hey I think I have an idea on how to cast lead free slugs! I think if you used tin/antimony alloy (basically lead free solder) and use bullet cast to cast it, Tim/antimony alloy is basically just a soft lead so you probably wouldn’t need a tighter twist rate, maybe throw a tungsten ball or something in there if you really want that extra weight but I don’t think the weight difference is that huge
@UpNorthAirGunner3 жыл бұрын
Ya the sectional density of those alloys you mentioned are way lighter than lead. The BC would be horrible.
@gregmcb53053 жыл бұрын
@@UpNorthAirGunner how much different would it be? Tin after all is 2/3 the weight bye volume I’m pretty sure, so with a solid slug and at under like 60 yards it would still be pretty effective right? I mean you definitely know more than me for sure but I think it’s worth a try, I would love to test it but don’t have any bullet casting equipment or a pcp air rifle atm. If it worked I think It could be helpful for allot of people! Even if they needed tungsten cores to be as good as lead and where expensive i think it would convince me to get a PCP when I have enough money one day
@UpNorthAirGunner3 жыл бұрын
@@gregmcb5305 The better lead free alloy is bismuth. It is closer in section density to lead and non-toxic. The other issue is the entire reason to run slugs vs. pellets that close in would be there ability to expand on impact so the hardness of the alloy is super important. Pure lead can't be beat in that category and harder allows would just pencil through the game animal.
@huckstirred71123 жыл бұрын
tin and antimony is used to make hard cast pistol bullets by adding to the lead mix . To harden my cast bullets I use silver solder in very small amounts , Many years ago " I am 49 " When I was a teenager there was a pellet called the penetrator , It was a pellet with a tungsten ball in the tip . If you want a low power pellet gun to kill you needed penetration , and it would penetrate like a drill press . I told Bryan the guy at the register at gun trader ,the guy who named these pellets must have been a porn fein because the name makes them difficult to ask for
@gregmcb53053 жыл бұрын
@@UpNorthAirGunner that’s definitely true but right now The only non-toxic option is only available in the pellet design and they end up being supper inaccurate due to going supersonic most of the time ect and The Diablo shape doesn’t handle passing the supersonic Barrier very well from what I understand, Plus the pellets end up having such little weight with the Diablo shape, but with a slug design it can better cross that super sonic barrier without losing stability like a Diablo pellet, and gets a little extra mass compared to a normal lead free diablo pellet. I’m not saying it will ever Match the accuracy of a lead slug or lead diablo, but It’s legit the only reason besides money that I haven’t gotten a air rifle. It would mean so much to me to be able get some lead free slugs that work reasonably acceptably.

Higher ballistic coefficient in .22 due to the higher sectional density. Slinging 31 or 34 or even 40 grain slugs is giving you relatively high BCs at high velocities vs. the larger calibers.
