FX Hybrid Slugs in Smooth Twist barrels (FX Royale) - Do they really work?

Everybody talks about Hybrid slugs and there are many airgun shooters, that have air rifles with Smooth Twist barrels.
Is it with spending the money on these fancy slugs? Let's find out

Greetings from Sweden! Awesome video, you answered my questions! The "problem" with the Jumbo is that it dont deform at all, it often just go straight trough the target. But still, it hits :D The twist on the smooth twist barrel is to short. The hades goes spiral sometimes, its sensitive for damaged skirt

Questions. 1) what do you use as a trigger lock? 2) what length is your barrel? 3) what is your Reg and hammer spring settings? Thanks :)

1. I don't use trigger lock. I transport the gun in a locked hard case. 2. 19.50 inch 3. Reg pressure is 135 as set by factory. I haven't changed hammer spring tension, so again factory setting.

@@TasteofCanadianOutdoors Thanks very much for the reply. Sadly using the case isnt an option for me as I use the 700mm barrel. Taking it off and putting it back in the case with the 380mm barrel isnt practical as re-installing the 700 out in the field is likely to allow dirt to enter the unit in an uncontrolled environment. I must find a locking system.

I live in Vancouver Canada. From what I understand FX makes three kinds of slug liners the standard, the pellet and Slug and just a slug barrel? Someone else told me that they only make two barrels the STX which is the standard barrel and the slug barrel heavy. Do you agree?

Awesome, Loved it. Thanks for the honest review as I was about to jump to test FX Hybrid Slugs with my FX Bobcat. I will request you to try JSB Knockout with your smooth twist because these gave me impressive results but still below JSB Diabolo 18grain. FX Hybrid Slugs being ousted now I hope you will throw a review soon with JSB Knockout vs JSB 18 grian vs JSB Hades.

Just tested my fx royal .22 with h&n slugs. Sub .5" groups at 35 yards.

I’ve tried shooting hybrids thru my .25 impact with the st barrel. I’ve had a few that get stuck in the barrel

How was the accuracy at 870fps with the hybrids? Some slugs / barrel combos need more fps to dial them in. Play with the fps. I bet you could dial them in with your gun.

Great test! But if you want the slug to perform ok you need to be prepared that it needs to bump up the power. I shoot mine at 1060 with ok results in stx. And the benefits of the slugs start at 50 range and up. Under 50 hades or baracuda hunter does the job well in stx. My A liner love h&n barraduda hunter but you will get a flier now and than. Test the jsb knockouts and see pricing is much better. God luck

My typical hunt is grouse and I have shot grouse at 80 yards with JSB. It dropped like a sack of potato, but couldn't find it. In Northern Ontario and Quebec even finding the dead bird at 40 yards is a challenge. So for my hunting, JSB Hades does the trick at anything between 10 to 40 yards. Last week I got a tin of JSB KO and I want to test the accuracy in the range. I tested them in the clay and they don't mushroom as good as Hybrids.

Good video, the fx slugs are to expensive for me. You have to buy another barrel, the x barrel to shoot slugs and I am not doing that.. I noticed the Nielson slugs have come way down on price, but I can't shoot them in my fx bobcat mk2. They keep upping the price on the pellets I am going back to my reloaded 223 ammo. Actually I already have.

I found my sweet spot. JSB Hades is my pellet. Great accuracy within my typical hunting range and outstanding knockdown power. This year I shot quite a few squirrels, grouse and rabbits. They all died where they were standing. After hunting season is over, I start researching H&N. Thank you :)

That's the point. Even if at 950 fps, that gives me sub half inch group at 50 yards, I am not going to do that. Hybrid slug is not my day to day plinking ammo and tuning the Royale, streamline or bobcat is not some easily accessible setting. So I am afraid, I am not doing it with a perfectly tuned FX Royale that hits a half inch target at 50 yards EVERY TIME. And here is my Instagram alireza.aliabadi_ig :)

I think you are absolutely right. I didn't thought that slugs may need higher velocities. Worth considering. But how the heck I can increase my Bobcat velocity. It's giving me approx 900fps with JSB 18 grain.

Taste of Canadian Outdoors I understand but it is made for long distances and you should upgrade your air gun to can shooting slung that if you want shot more than 50 yards ...

The hades looks like as good option, given that it retains enough velocity for proper expansion.

Hi, I watched your 2 videos on shooting slugs in FX Royale “Smooth Twist” with great interest. I have been testing along the same lines as you with the same disappointing “Slug” results in the Royal Smooth Twist Barrel. However, recently I stumbled onto a promising possibility, the ZAN 25.5 gr (.22 cal). While they are not as accurate as JSB Hades (.5”), I do get respectful .75” 10 shot groups at 35 yards. . I plan on testing the even heavier ZAN 28 & 30.5 gr to see how they perform.

Thank you, I missed that video and thanks for sharing. At the end the point is, with guns that power is not easily adjustable, it is not worth fiddling around and messing up with it.
