Ted, I'm a firm believer in the old way of just trying different projectiles. I've seen too many times where even 2 barrels made side by side will prefer different projectiles. I understand you're trying to formulate a good starting point and outline consistencies. I do believe there is a solid relationship to projectile weight vs twist rate and what's compatible \ effective. I believe once that is close it's a matter of what outside diameter of projectile your particular barrel prefers. Please, please, please keep sharing your data. Nothing refutes good science!

Having shot .22 lr no two barrels will shoot exactly the same they may be similar but one will have a sweet spot for certain ammo. Time, trial and error to sort things out but you are giving valid starting points. A variety of weights and diameters in slug packaging maybe a place to start.

Wrong twist rate will cause this
@KC-dx5pf3 жыл бұрын
All the tears in his target where at 12:00. Yaw is a is a projectile starting to wabble and spiral. Ten shot group would have tears going in different directions. I can’t say what is causing it, and yaw certainly would, but every tear was at the same 12:00 position. Maybe see what it does at 90 yards or 110? Quite interesting.
@grinchyface3 жыл бұрын
@@KC-dx5pf This can be true, but airguns are incredibly consistent ( .001% velocity variation in a well tuned gun), and the ammunition is more consistent than your average centerfire factory load- they are generally cold-forged/swaged into their final shape and so the weights are generally sub tenth-grain variance. Due to the (very consistent) harmonics of the gun, you can generally see chains of shots with similar patterns, because the projectile is leaving the barrel in precisely the same manner that it did before and may be carrying several different moments as it flies through the air, one of which could have it nose down or nose up for most of the flight.

Ha, I may be one of the few that actually likes the pellet/slug culling process! I have chased Jeff's Crown and finally got my new MK2 Crown .22 to match his....Ha, probably helped I bought it from him and had him set it up but even then it took time to massage everything to get it there...... My other guns, part of the fun is loading up the range bag and getting outside and trial and error.....That feeling when you finally get that MOA group at 100 and the fiddling with this and that to get there.. I have owned EVERY FX gun produced and would not trade all the options today and that process of seeing what works for the days of chambering a 25.39 in my 500 and knowing that was the best ammo period... To your point of a formula.....Throw in the towel. Each barrel no matter who makes it via what process will never be 100% equal. Tiny grooves or imperfections will turn an inch group into a two inch group when it comes to the ammo we shoot. There is a reason why a 175 grain slug out of a big bore is more predictable when shot out of the same brand and make of gun.....Sheer heft absorbs those imperfection better than a 33 grain soft based slug. Find what works for YOU and enjoy it...For God sakes when you do hit the nail on the head LEAVE it be and just savor it!! That being said I have found 600mm is better for me with slugs....NO idea why but I am guessing the interaction with the ammo and the barrel makes all the difference and somehow 600mm gives the best results on the barrel imposing its will on the slug (or pellet)...My findings so take with a grain of salt. Stay well Ted and as always appreciate the detail you put in to each video!

I just got my 25 cal Maverick sniper Thursday. I put the Element Titan scope on it (your welcome). Nice scope. . I shot for about 1 hr at UA in Orem UT. It is a 30 yrd range. What is interesting is I had the Crown before I got the Maverick and I would get some fliers but the Maverick right out of the box after UA set it all up shot a lot better groups. Four shots less than .2 CC So what I am saying the advancement in the technology on these rifles is amazing and the things you thought you might be doing wrong bad trigger pull, breathing etc. may not have been the problem. It was the equipment had some variables that the new guns don't have. The purchase was well worth the money. c

@nmoran20463 жыл бұрын
You may not be wrong with the angle of impact on the paper but it may not be the projectile it may be the target if it’s as windy as you say the target could have blown off of 90 to the angle of impact may not be the slug If you could re-create it on a piece of plywood with a hole cut out so the pellets can pass through then yes it’s the slug I believe the range you shoot at uses a construction fence to hang your targets so there’s room for movement just a thought

Hi Ted, thank you again for sharing your knowledge! I spoke/thanked you after 2017 EBR after I won sport class. I learned from your videos for years! Could it be possible if pellet wabble caused these tears at 100 that the spin and wabble would be at exactly 12:00 position every shot? Seems very unlikely to me. Thanks, and see you in competition soon! I have been on hiatus for a couple years, but coming back now. Thank you again for your knowledge! Whiteout it I could not have done so well in 17!

I agree with Pelletgunner the pellet is tumbling at 100 yards, this is why you are getting angled wholes instead of a straight punch. I have seen this shotting .308 on paper targets at long distances with light rounds that do not stabilize correctly.

@pasjooter10393 жыл бұрын
The problem with the tears is your bullets are not stabilised enough, I had this with a 243 win in the past, had the same pattern with heavier bullets 100grs, once I dropped down to 85 gr it was shooting like a laser. Basically my twist rate was too slow, don’t know if that’s the case with your barrel. Just started into PCP, not enough experience yet. Nice vid.
@BionicRusty2 жыл бұрын
Great point and one that regularly plagues the airgun shooter. My honest opinion is that any variable could cause destabilisation. And it only has to be a small one. I was shooting QYS domed 2 wks ago at the range with winds of 0-4mph. Groupings we’re awful with tears like Ted is showing. Last week, the wind was 10-15mph and with exactly the same set-up, I was 10mm groups at the same distance. (Only 30m but I’m in the UK and that’s my ratting distance). The only variable I can think of to cause the destabilising is the wind. It seems counterintuitive but the QYS pellets are seeming to perform better with some wind. More testing required. 👍
@hotchihuahua15463 жыл бұрын
On the design of the pellet you aren’t just shifting the weight forward on the pellet you are also pushing the pellet into the barrel more or less to the groves of a given barrel , does that make a difference ? So many variables , I feel for you .
@lancemclean57003 жыл бұрын
Hey Ted. Watched a video a while back about powerful new .22 pcp's and new heavy pellets. You noted that perhaps this may be the future for competitive shooting as the BC is getting quite good. I am thinking either a daystate red wolf or Fx crown. I would Love it in .22., as I have a FX Streamline in .25 already. But do you think .25 and .30 are still the choice if you wanted to get into bench rest or extreme bench rest shooting. I noticed a few good shooters using .22 for the one gun challenges but not sure how many would choose them for dedicated bench rifles.

@corny1553 жыл бұрын
Yeah…there are a lot of variables that come into play with the whole liner system. Like say, that 600mm crown barrel that stacks ko .22 mk1’s. What are the chances of getting that liner into another rifle and seeing the data repeat? My guess is…it wouldn’t

I was shooting the .25 cal Knockouts this weekend w/DreamLite for the first time and noticed the target tear also. I would like to know what is the cause also.
@flytelaw13 жыл бұрын
Ted, can you put a slo-mo camera at 90 degrees to the poi so you can establish pitch up versus pitch down on the tear drop entries....this will confirm, or clear up any “over/under stabilization” issues. Are you seeing that significant velocities changes are changing the tear patterns or is a particular distance involved......Cheers, Ted, Merry Christmas and don’t let the trolls kill your mojo😎

Did not have access to a chrono, but, could get consistent placement in no or light wind at 50yds. No easy attach pastor glass, so, just later peep sights and OTS notch-n-post. Targets were bottle caps and sweetgum tree balls. Better eyes back then. Nowadays the airgun and my eyes don't work so well.

So far with my experience you must keep testing and like Matt Dubber has said reg pressures play a big role in the accuracy
@heathhalfhill68673 жыл бұрын
It could be the camera shake when the gun was fired, but I swear I saw the slugs corkscrew in flight. Could be an optical illusion, might not be either. Would a corkscrew cause the long tear in the target, or just the pitch of the slug on impact?
@HoldOverVlog3 жыл бұрын
On most shots, it is an optical illusion. If you slow the video down, you can see it more clearly. I will likely add a few "super slowmo" shots next time to set everyone's mind at ease. :)

Even barrels in center fire cartridges same caliber and twist rate identically the same will have different personalities of wich bullet it shoots best. In my opinion your fx barrels will be the same way. The longer the projectile, the faster the twist rate will need to be to stabilize the bullet in flight. Key holes means to slow a twist.

Regarding tears in target...You didn't tell us where the wind was coming from? Behind then the back of the slug could be pushes down nose up. Thanks for testing these for us Ted. ..as far as the different liners go, how can I tell which is which? And what is the difference between the Superior and Superior Heavy?
@HoldOverVlog3 жыл бұрын
The liners are all labeled, either with labeling tape or sharpie. Wind was from the right (south). Superior Heavy barrel is more aggressive than the Superior. Faster twist rate, and possibly more choke (memory fails me).
@etiredevill78342 жыл бұрын
Hello Ted, I have a few liners, one of them from a Dubber slugger. It only seems to shoot JSB Monster redesigned. What I wanted to ask is, have you noticed different rifling depth on your barrel liners? I have .25 Superior liner, and the land marks when you push a pellet are quite pronounced. The land marks when pushed through the Dubber slugger liner (which I thought to be a superior heavy liner) are almost non-existent. If you have barrels such as described, do you find the longer / heavier slugs don't perform in the "light" rifling?

Wouldn't you expect a wobble to be tearing in all 360 degrees? The paper all show a tear right above the main hole with maybe 10 degrees of variation like at 1:16. The theory of it coming in at a arc and edge of the hollow point grabs the paper on the way down makes sense to me. It's not consistent, though, like at 11:58. How does does back of the paper look? Still think adding the twist rate of the barrel is MORE significant than the FX name Sayings a xx gr slug or pellet shots better out of a 700 MM . 18 in twist than a 700 MM 24 inch twist has more significance than saying .superior. Light. Heavy. Old. New.Thanks for the effort I LEARN a lot TOM

You talk about the barrel a lot, but i didnt hear you mention the fact, jsb dont always make the amminition 100% correct or that they might miss label the tin.this does happen here in the uk or so it seems.did you check the size and weight, 100yds shots, every little counts

Dreamline .25 600mm Superior Liner. Stacking NSA 29.0’s all day. Still not 100% but I believe the Huma pin probe made a significant difference in accuracy for me, not because of velocity but because it seats 10 thousandths deeper than the factory probe. That’s my theory anyway. I only shoot the NSA 29.0 out of my dreamline anymore. At least until I get an impact or a Maverick.
