The names of the players in Clavell's novel, the original miniseries and this series, have been altered from those of their real historical counterparts. Production values and cast are A+ and I can't wait to see this... Fun fact-- "Shogun" makes for a trifecta of shows (Apple TV's "Pachinko" and "Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters" are the other two), featuring Anna Sawai and all three, were made (in part) in and around Vancouver.

Funny thing is... its generally accurate. This is basically at the end of the Sengoku period. Oda Nobunaga was dead, and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi (the Taiko in the video) was also dead, leaving the Toyotomi clan in the hands of a 7 years old. A council regent is set up to rule Japan instead. One of the regent is a daimyo called Tokugawa Ieyasu (in this video Toranaga). They use almost the same name and pretty much the same clan flag.

Clavell changing the names of the historical figures works in its favor. Wikipedia-readers pretending to be historical experts will have a hard time complaining about "historical accuracy" of fictional characters.

Saw the Last Samurai as a 15 year old boy and afterwards I read Shogun after my mom recommended it. Fell in love with historic Japan, vowed to one day stay in Japan for a prolonged time. When I was 27 I moved to Japan and I've been living here for 7 years now. The days of old are definitely gone, but there are places around that make me fall in love with Japan all over again.

Except at 27 - I retrained as a chef here in London & ended up working some of the most depressing dark days of my life lol. The "Sengoku Period" (the era of civil wars) that Japanese learn about in school classes was the period before Toyotomi Hideyoshi, aka "Taikoh" in this video, once ruled Japan. And this "Sengoku Period" was filled with countless treacheries, plots, numerous warlords and fierce battles. Thinking back on how I felt when I was taking the class, it was as if I were watching "Game of Thrones" right now. When I was watching "Game of Thrones," I thought it would be great if there was a show that portrayed Sengoku Period in Japan with this quality, but I never thought it would actually become a reality!

Historical conflicts about succession crisis or warring states periods are basically sources for infinite amazing TV shows. Pretty much every monarchy ever has had some really interesting ones at different times, both succession wars and a warring states period. It is also what makes Game of Thrones so good, or at least the books, is that it reflects extremely well real human conflict of this type, and that is infinitely interesting to me.

Game of Thrones itself is based upon/inspired by the 'Wars of the Roses' period of civil war in medieval England. This period in mid to late 1400s England led to the establishment of the Tudor dynasty and the famous King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.
@threenumbnuts

@@julian-p True, but OTOH the change of names helps make it clear that this is fictionalized. No big-budget TV show will show history completely accurately- especially since they inevitably have to 'fill in the blanks', or choose which account to follow when historians do not have a consensus on a particular incident- but people tend to vastly overrate their accuracy. This way, it constantly reminds the audience that this is not the real story, just inspired / based on it.

The reason why Christians were suppressed was because Hideyoshi Toyotomi learned that Portuguese merchants were selling gunpowder to Christian daimyo and selling the Japanese as slaves to Europe. That is written in “天正遣欧少年使節”. As an aside, Japan was isolated in the Tokugawa era and Christianity was banned, but there were still people who believed in it. One of the areas was Nagasaki, and the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki was directly above the medical school and the Catholic Church.

Most people aren't familiar with the diacritical marks that are added onto letters to indicate changes in pronunciation, stress, tone, or other aspects of speech. So they just pronounce the word exactly how it's written. The pronunciation of Shōgun in English borrows from the Japanese "将軍". The diacritic over the "o" (the macron, ō) is supposed to indicate a long vowel sound.

Shogun is one of the great contemporary classics. Beautiful and brutal in equal measure. I have read it once a year since my early teens. It also introduced me to Musashi, whose story follows after the events of the war for the Shogunate. Im beyond excited for this. I hope it was made with love.

I have been an admirer and collector of all James Clavell and my prized possession left in my collection is the best "Shogun" which was written in the year I was born ...too bad my other novels was lost in my travels and moving residences thru the years...

Very nice reconstruction! I love Clavell’s works and I recommend everyone to read the others in timeline order rather than the date of publication: Shogun > Gai-Jin > Tai-Pan > King Rat > Noble House > Whirlwind

Another Total War game got its movie/TV tie more than a decade after its release. Last year it was Napoleon: Total War, and this year its Shogun's turn.

This artfully crafted and beautifully rendered historical primer gives me a lot of hope for the quality of the show. If FX puts this much work into creating such a visually stunning presentation, just to educate people as to the historical context of the show, then it is a clear indicator that the show is probably going to be top notch in terms of its production value.
