Yes ,this scene was much better in the book. Yabu declared that if the villagers can't teach Blackthorne Japanese in six months, he will kill the entire village. Of course Blackthorne was horrified, so he explained that he could not live with this burden and would rather die. Yabu didn't believe him, so Blackthorne attempted seppuku and was stopped by Omi. After that, he was respected by all the Japanese.

Loved the podcast discussion of this scene as well, because it is absolutely Blackthorne realizing what it means to live and die for people. This is 100% Blackthorne's symbolic death and resurrection as the Englishman of Japan. This is the moment his karma binds him to Japan for the rest of his life.

Well, we do know from history. John Blackthorne is based on William Adams. And he was eventually allowed to leave Japan but he decided to stay. He died in his fifties and had a wife and kids. Today there are monuments to him in Tokyo.
@jmaitland57098 ай бұрын
Well, its not that bad, like we see at the end, as well as what we know from real history, Toranaga wants a fleet of modern ships, and Blackthorne won't just be a pet, but rather his chief shipbuilder. In real life William Adams didn't only design and build ships in Japan, but he also ran a trade company, and was Tokugawa's new chief translator. All in all, not a bad ending.

A good scene, but I would argue it is more impactful in the book. In the book, when Blackthrone is first made Hatamoto, Yabu tells the village if he has not learned enough Japanese in six months, everyone will be killed, and the village burned. After that, Blackthrone almost takes his life with the short sword, but is stopped by Omi in the last second. Blackthorne saves the village, gains a new understanding of the Japanese, and like said in the book, is reborn.
@andypham145121 сағат бұрын
I do think this scene in the show was also impactful because of the build-up of several events leading up to this moment. While the reasoning for the scene is different and instead of Omi, it was Toranaga stopping him, the circumstances and core remained the same as it is in the book - it came at the expense of the villagers, Blackthorne embracing and becoming part of Japan, and it's one of the most sincere and honest acts that didn't come from a place of selfishness. Throughout the show, Blackthorne had selfish ambitions to disrupt the Portuguese trade which resulted to his crew to resent him as they felt he abandoned them and see that he was treated better. He also was torn between the European and Japanese worlds where he still feels like an outsider. While Blackthorne tries to learn the Japanese language and customs, the concept of death that Blackthorne couldn't get from his POV. To him, trivalising death in such as casual way didn't make sense to him throughout the show. Mariko taught him how death can be used as a form of protest and wanted him to embrace life and death as it is. After the seppuku, he not only became respected to the Japanese, he's finally part of their community. Hence the villagers helping him pulling his ship to the shore. In the show, I honestly cannot recall if Blackthorne saw a seppuku ritual performed until he reluctantly seconded Mariko. Given how the events played out in the show, I don't think it would make sense for Blackthorne to perform seppuku in the midpoint even though that's when he would've in the book. Because he hadn't learnt all those lessons yet, it would come across as a performance than an act of sincerity. I don't think it took away the impact of it from the book, but the show helped elevated the famous scene on a different level.
@flaver1349 минут бұрын
@@andypham1451 That is true. I would have loved to see the entire book done in the style they did this show, it would be awesome. However, as much as I love the show, I still prefer the book, because there is so much more. But obviously, it is hard to make a whole book come to life in a series. Budget stuff. The mini series comes pretty close, but that too is limited. But I think we can all agree the actors, the mood, the tone, the writing, and just everything in the show was just pure awesome. :)

Even the book just went over it not giving it that much importance. The battle was already won a month before it actually started. As Toranaga implied, he doesn't go to a battle he can't win and he masterfully isolated Ishido from episode 8 and 9. Made every one in osaka believe he is weak and surrendering in episode 8. Then exposed Ishido, successfully freed the hostages, generated disugust for Ishido in the council of regents for cowardly murder of Mariko, turned lady Ochiba against Ishido. Declared a just and lawfull war ( even though he was surrendering before according to the council ) against the regents for the death of his vassal. With lady ochiba and heir's army not supporting Ishido, Toranaga won the battle

I have not watched the entire program, just these YTube shorts of the show. Of all the actors who are characters in this show, Blackthorne is the worst - does not come off as the Blackthorne from when I read the book many years ago. Hard to place exactly what puts off on the guy, it's like he has a weak chin or something (not literally, just the general feeling) and while I don't have a particular actor I think could have played him better, for me, it isn't him. He does look like a singer though.
